A tour around the edge of the Isle Of Wight (off the coast of Portsmouth in England).

I had to take a detour after lunch as the thumb wheel on the rear derailleur had snapped and the gear cable was badly frayed. I noticed I couldn’t change into the easiest gear at the rear about an hour into the ride, but didn’t notice the extent of the damage until lunch time at the Mouse Inn.

On closer inspection the rear gear cable was holding on by 2 threads (rather than the whole cable). I found a ‘local’ bike shop about an hour away and left lunch early to get there before the cable completely snapped. It took me 42 minutes to get there, with my heart rate pushing 160 bpm on the ascents, trying my best not to change gears at the rear.

There was one thread holding the rear gears in place by the time I got to Adrian’s Bike Shop. Adrian replaced the broken thumb wheel and fitted a new cable in really quick time. So I was able to join the group again without slowing them down.

The camera is more shaky that usual due to a different out-front mount. Its a nice carbon component but I think that accentuates all the bumps in the road.
