today I’m trying to help a beginner cyclist ride 50 miles for the first time ever i don’t really know how to manage the gear i don’t know what I would do if I have a mechanical and I think I’m a bit scared for my fitness for someone not used to cycling the distance of 50 mi can seem so daunting but today I really want to prove that it’s not and with a little bit of help a little bit of guidance that distance is definitely achievable without any dramas i’ve never gotten out of the saddle oh yeah that’s it that was three sips to be honest I think I’ve actually given you too much food too high for that let’s get riding [Music] hi I’m Mosa i work behind the scenes at GCN i’m from Finland i’m 23 years old and I am not a cyclist i’m Naomi and I work on Gen of Hon which is a really cool channel and if you speak French you should definitely go and check it out but I work behind the scenes on that channel marrick Rosa and I all rode up banner down climb and we tried out three different kinds of bikes and honestly this day was like just such a blast oh my gosh it’s okay i’m super unfit since then and I’ve been commuting a whole lot and so enjoying this so I think my fitness has picked up a little bit i feel like I’m going so slow but I haven’t stopped yet it was a lot of fun but besides that I haven’t been on a bike i haven’t ridden 50 mi I think since last summer and I haven’t ridden 50 mi many times like maybe two or three times i think the furthest distance I’ve ever ridden on the bike was I think 30 km was probably the max i’m missing the smaller gear i have no idea what to expect i’m a little bit scared honestly about the climb at the start and the end i think this is kind of like a brutal way to that the route is planned we’ll see what happens but I think it’s going to be fine it should be fine we have all day you know should be fine [Music] what’s a cool way for cyclists to stand yeah like that hand on hip is a must they do this no I actually think that they do this i wish this was our own video because it would be so chaotic should we start a YouTube channel morning everyone hey how are we doing really great yeah nice one ready ready for 50 miles yeah um yeah yeah goodbye i feel a lot of responsibility today because this was my idea i definitely think you can do it i think 50 mi is achievable take it nice and easy tip along and I really want by the end of the day for you to be like I can do that like that’s achievable and I want to do it again any last questions before you go yeah okay should we be worried about the rain i’m really worried about I’m actually worried about the rain too you’ll be You’ll be okay we’ll we’ll take it easier especially downhill i haven’t watched any videos about um managing the bike in the rain uh even though I was sent one this morning so I know i didn’t do the research yet i think it’s just like take it easy to begin with got a bag full of food yes so any uh any issues we’ll just keep eating 50 miles is a long ride right i’ve heard that when you do like a long ride like this you have to have like gels and stuff or like chews i’ve never gel what is a chew you don’t need to it can help just like it’s really compact it is easy to get the energy in in quite a small package so I think we’ll try and just eat what you’d normally eat but maybe at the end when you do need some like quite fast sugar I’ve got some like I don’t know it’s just for you for me as much as you to be honest oh yeah do we have to be worried about chafing no I’ve heard so much about chafing and I don’t know we haven’t talked about it yet i just thought I could take it off like I know you’re getting used to spike still and this is a longer ride so if you feel you need to change something like don’t be afraid to tell us all to stop and we can things all right okay cool thanks should we do it let’s hit the streets hit the streets good luck everyone let’s do it wait I need to put on my glasses [Music] yeah you got it the route I’ve designed for this challenge brings us out from the city of Bath in 50-mi loop passing through some of my favorite lanes and quiet villages I use for most of my own riding 50 mi feels like a landmark distance for someone just starting out in the sport so I’ve tried to keep climbing to a minimum although admittedly that’s hard to avoid around here before we do hit any climbs though we’ve got to navigate our way out of the city oh I didn’t start my straa come on if it’s not on straa it doesn’t happen that’s what they say i know oh my gosh so I have designed this route to be as like flat as possible but you do live in a hilly area of the world once to get over it’s been a beast oh my gosh but once we get over it should be pretty plain sailing good work everyone we’re flying [Music] how you feeling Rosa great i think it was smart to get a climb out of the way early cuz it’s going to it’s going to boost our confidence for the rest of the ride this is so nice to not be doing it like full gas i think I was scared about it because my association with this climb was there three times we did it in one day and honestly that day was also super hot and doing a few climbs back to back and trying to go as fast as we could it’s just like nowhere near as fun as just just slogging it up come on lowest gear that was it I think yay oh my gosh Nelly that was it yay yay i must admit my upper body is a little bit tired already but maybe I just have to warm up okay great question which break is the front brake um um I actually don’t know i just like do both at the same time and hope for the best okay we should uh make sure you know this so your So right brake is the front is the front brake okay and then this is the back it’s good to use them at the same both at the same time you just need to know like if you are going to stop really suddenly at any point not just like grab the front brake okay cuz you might fly off yeah [Music] it’s probably a good idea to get some food in so I might start getting the old snacks out i don’t know why but I find cyclists eating gels and stuff like very iconic yeah this is so I’m really excited to try i feel like we’re dressed the part we’re going to eat the part right what’s the strategy i don’t I just don’t want to leave it too late and to run out of juice or something okay we’re going to eat something now okay I think I can grab it wait wait just let me let me boost my confidence a little bit i’ll just go really slow that was great thanks so do you just pop the whole thing in your mouth are you happy to doubt is this a shoe what the heck oh my gosh this is a big moment what do we do just try it all in in one just Okay [Applause] is the point that we actually don’t stop at all for this whole ride like like I thought that we were going to stop and chat and regroup well we can start like we don’t need to but I I just thought like is this how it usually goes for the pros like the idea is that you stay on the bike like the whole time as much as possible right we can stop if you really want to stop we’ll stop it’s a good idea to keep rolling when we can okay so now like when you’re flat as fast Yeah put it in the big ring at the front push the whole thing across like Oh my god oh wa wa this is so fast [Music] so how far have we done 11k 11k 11k wa we’re killing it naomi this is going to be great yep [Applause] i know right i’m so glad I got to hold this pit stop to look at the shoes yeah that would be pretty look at these guys how do you feel about standing up out of the saddle but not pedaling but just like that could help you maybe cuz then you can use it and then you can use your knees to absorb a bit oh more suspension in the knees more suspension in the knees that’s the part that’s slowing me down because we were saying we should probably be fast cuz keep warm oh yeah to keep warm i was I was going to say cuz we’re dressed like pros oh because we’re pros actually we’re about to head through Castle Tomb okay it’s a really historic village so picturesque such a nice spot to pass through on this route by I think you’ll like this next bit so far the room has been so nice yeah I agree the only problem is I keep accidentally um putting the big gear whenever we get to a climb let’s have a little stop chew break [Music] right everyone we’re an hour and 15 m coming up to 20k we’re doing great do you’re doing great doing great a quarter in so we take confidence from that how are you coping with like the traffic and riding on the roads how’s that feeling um it’s starting to feel super comfortable now like with not feeling scared on the road on the bumps and uh keeping high speed but still like feeling in control i think it’s important to remember as well like you’re you’re like you are part of the road as well like every right to be there so don’t feel like you should be bullied into the side okay but you’re both doing great we’ve had more chews more food we keep on track your shoes are so good let’s keep rolling cool let’s keep rolling i’m on a really big gear yeah me too we’ll just get on to the road quickly i want to live here me too it’s been amazing actually to see like your confidence grow cuz I’ve noticed we’ve been riding faster and you’ve been more comfortable kind of push it on a little bit and I think that’s a really good idea because and you can and as long as you feel like you’re able to it’s going to really reduce the time of riding form which is going to mean you’ll feel less tired at the end that’s awesome and you got one hand off the bar oh yeah wait wait bump i’m glad you persevered but it’s like it’s really cool to see you absolutely smash it yeah the route has been awesome thank you is 10 out of 10 yeah I’m just happy that we haven’t had any chasing yet um because I was really really worried but it turns out that I was worried for nothing i kind of feel like my body had to warm up and now it’s really comfortable that’s why I kind of didn’t want us to stop too much and start you want to try and I think just keep rolling keep moving okay cuz if you stop and get cold that’s when it can feel like hard to get going again okay i didn’t realize i don’t think I knew that right come on on to the halfway point nearly there yes wa what the heck i think the best part about cycling is seeing the new places uh-oh oh my god this roundabout let’s turn away let’s just follow oh we did it yeah easy no I haven’t been drinking hydration but we have been having to choose precision fuel and hydration have you been drinking Raza no not not too much the thing is I’m scared to reach the bottle i think I can do it if we just go a little bit slower let’s go real slow wow you’re killing it get the whole the whole thing okay that was three sips that was three sips it’ll be better the next time [Music] i’m going to drink more water i drank you know I drank all mine do you usually like just squirt it just give it like a squeeze yeah why are you doing this that’s got nothing to do with cycling knowledge it’s a bottle you don’t need me to tell you no but the way you’re like squirting it into your mouth from the outside all right gel for you David thanks for you Rosa oh my god this is a big moment this is my first gel ever everyone just talks about gels to be honest I think I’ve actually given you too much food too hyper you might have been here a while [Music] i’ve never seen someone take so long to eat i’ve done it I think oh really oh you’re supposed to just Thanks yeah all in one just made an absolute meal of it oh sorry i thought it was like an ice cream like time it was an ice cream let’s go let’s go [Music] this is the highlight of the ride the cafe stop so looking forward to showing you i’ve actually been thinking about this the whole time right we’ve had a quick lunch stop we’ve scoffed the food down i think this has been mostly for me actually because these two have eaten all my food the lunch the coffee we had to eat it quick because the thunder clouds have actually started to brew i want us to get to the end safe and sound like this is where we all need to concentrate how you feeling thanks Connor feeling amazing honestly I Well actually I feel like more tired now after stopping how you doing Naomi i think I’m doing good i’m a bit chilly i’m a bit nervous about this storm i think we should hit the road again get moving because as I said those clouds look pretty ominous and I don’t want any more jeopardy i just want to get you home safe and sound you’re doing great though doing great few sprints once we get moving let’s do it i’m ready to sprint we do have 5 minutes until that absolute paws down so get on your bikes hit the road come on oh left left okay we have left our lunch stop and we think we might just about be getting away with the rain but it is absolutely thundering down to the left your skills are improving literally every 10k it’s is incredible it’s really cool to see i reckon now we should like up it a little bit just to get a better grasp cuz now is when you can kind of feel the fatigue creep in a little bit it’s good to mix your position up so like try different hand positions also if you can on climbs like get out of the saddle that can that can help are you okay with getting out of the saddle i’ve never gotten out of the saddle so what I’d say first is just get your feet like parallel like flat and just try and do that okay if you can like that yeah and balance on the pedals oh yeah I can so do that there you go okay okay so what you want to practice that position and once you’re there then it’s about being able to keep your body in that that place but also pedal oh my god so you can like stabilize your upper body and pedal at the same time okay oh yeah that’s it you’re doing it oh my god so bend your arms a little more if you can that’s it wow yeah yeah that’s it you’re getting there okay i always see you guys doing it and it looks very cool now I can be cool too as cool as the gels not quite not quite as iconic as the right come on team concentration i don’t think you need any more sugar you’ve had enough of that keep it going connor is our mother dog god knows what it’s all going to happen [Music] rosa Naomi how you feeling i think great just just the fatigue is starting to kick in my body a little bit what is anything hurting how you like what’s what’s going on um everything’s good but I must admit my bum a little bit sore yeah I think like you’re going to expect to feel pretty tired now okay on your bike all day that’s like that’s normal how How about the distance like how you feeling about getting yourself to the finish now i think we can do this i think we can totally do this i think you can you got 16 km to go really wait that’s so little you’ve done 64K oh my goodness this one keep the concentration this is the last climb of the day yeah keep going oh really how long is this climb about a kilometer get in your little little gear at the front give it a good hit that’s it there you go oh thanks so the rain’s properly coming oh my god we can now run it but we are inside 10k to go this is like the last climb of the day we can do it the finish is in sight yeah we can do it all right we’re committed now wow what the heck absolutely boring can you believe this oh god here comes the sun here comes the sun and I say it’s all right what was your best part of the day oh my gosh I really loved the pit stop where we tried the gel honestly or maybe it was trying the first shoe that was a glorious feeling when we were just headed on this big adventure once we finish I’m going to feel so proud i can already feel it i I can already feel it cuz we’re in a familiar area so I can’t believe that we’re already reaching taste no offense to the cafe right everything in the cafe was amazing mhm but the chew was top tier oh my goodness woo we made it oh my god we did it we did it well done wait hey hey Frank how did it feel your longest ever ride i know when I first put this through both actually you were like really hesitant so how does it feel finishing it off it feels awesome i’m so proud i can’t believe that we did it i thought we were going to suffer so much i thought that it was going to be painful i thought that the bike was going to start hurting i thought it would be out of energy but like we did it we made it we smashed it there was one moment at the start when we were going quite slow out of town and I was thinking maybe I put the distance a bit too high to start off but I think you got your confidence so quick and that’s what it’s about you relaxed and we picked the pace up and then from there you just you smacked it any any hard moments though you know when we left the the cafe I realized like oh man there’s still a way to go oh my gosh and I started to feel the fatigue but in a different way than before before it was like a little bit tired in the legs a little bit tired in the upper body but that was like a a really deeper kind of fatigue but then surprisingly the rain kind of boosted my spirits up and then you said “There’s only 15K to go.” And that helped a lot i thought today was going to be just hard i thought the climbs were going to be painful i thought we were going to be like “Yeah that was going to be really difficult.” But actually I was so surprised it just actually felt so fun and like so easy so now I’m like “Oh my goodness I would come back and do this again i would add more.” Yeah we I think we could do more we could totally do more i do you say and let us know in the comment section below what you think we should put Rosa and Naomi up to next i think as you say I think there’s a longer one in you but thank you so much been good sports thank you for watching as always hope you enjoy this one as much as we enjoyed riding it we’ll see you on the next one bye bye

What did you think of Roosa & Naomi's ride? What do you want to see them take on next? 👀 Let us know in the comments! 👇
I'm beingforced to commute roughly 7km one way to work every day so Ill pay some attention, thankfully it's a mostly flat trip.
Well done GCN and well-done Conor for bringing in a couple of new riders into our beloved sport and showing them the ropes! And well-done ladies on your first 50 miler!
They’re both so cute… motivates this old man to get back on the bike
It seems like Naomi could use a proper bike-fit. From watching her knees bow outward on all the various bikes she is shown riding on – it's not great for her knees long term. Wild that nobody at GCN would take the time to adjust the bike for her.
arrrggg, changing gears under full load
This is so wholesome 🫶 as a beginner that doesn’t even have a road bike yet, this is boosting my own confidence!
Enjoyable watch. Would be great if we had safe places to ride distance and not worry about traffic. Silverstone circuit used to do cycle nights but they dont seem to advertise anymore.
this video was so sweet. roosa and naomi are awesome and seem like they had so much fun. awesome. <3
I used to do 20 miles. From Murray to Mayfield, or Murray to Paris. 40-45 minutes was my average. I only used 3 gears. No matter what. But I was 24-25 years old. 26 Mountain bike. Literally wore the rear detailer adjustment platform off the frame. Should of entered the Olympics.
7:08 wait, is right brake the front brake in the UK?!
A fun video. 😅
What a fun episode!
Nice too see novice doing this distance. <3 Amazing energey, motivates a lot 🤩
It is not the distance but the feeling when you achieve something that first felt almost daunting. I had the same feeling when we finished Vätternrundan in 2017 (300 km)
LOVED this video, such awesome inspiration for us newbies ❤️
Finally, I had time time to watch this video… Very nice, very cute and nice trip! Please do it more similar! 😊
Congratulations to the girls! They are awesome! You are awesome! 😊 … and a whole team of course 😉
Im not brave enough, I dont feel the power to ride in the rain, but you… you did this! Great job, nice and respect! 😊
That was an awesome vid! Well done to the girls and their mother duck, made me smile with pure joy ❤
IMHO Gels are highly overrated by most people, advertising has done a good job at selling extremely overpriced products to everyone.
For the longest time just adding ISO powder to your water was good enough for any sport (and still is), and now people think they can't ride 30k without taking "Gels", which is mostly sugar water. Many of the products are not even Gels! They are watery or like sirup in consistency. Also the added downside of producing a lot of waste by the small packaging (1kg pack of powder much less so).
so precious. must protect both at all costs
Please do "Roosa and Naomi first Grand Fondo" hehehe
this is adorable,
GCN should have a playlist of people of different backgrounds tryinng cycling first time
Absolutely loved this video! Excellent job by GCN, Conner, and specially the two young riders!! Can’t wait to see them on their next adventure.
Should we talk about chafing?
Put them to stability test (the cones)
What chews do you / did you use?
Use kilometers please. Totally demented with this "miles, yards, foot, pounds", nonsense
