share my screen it’s really lovely to be here with you guys today because this is a topic that’s really close to my heart but it also is what I do for a living as well um and I really believe that more small businesses should be getting involved in being sustainable in some way at least um because when we all do something small it’s better than no one doing anything at all um so I’m here today to present um getting confident about sustainability in your small business so first of all I’m going to introduce myself so um as Andy mentioned my name is Lucy I’m the founder of the whip um I’m formerly um I formerly worked in luxury fashion media for um magazines and for stylists um and I also after that went on to work for sustainable businesses um I’ve had three years experience working as an Enterprise Nation local lead running local meetups for them with um other entrepreneurs um and I also recently became certified as a business Mentor um I’m also a mother of two um and I mention that because it’s uh it’s something that has taught me a lot about working for myself and how I’m pushing forwards and growing um and it actually led me to become a business Mentor so hopefully there are some things here that I can help you with um and as Andy mentioned if you sign up to those one-on-one consult ations I can help you to specifically work through your own challenges as a business um and hopefully we can get you in a really good position to apply for those amazing grants that are on offer so I’ll Dive Right In um why should your business be sustainable well first let’s have a look at what what the word sustainable means because there’s quite a lot of misunderstanding around the word so in 1987 the UN defined sustainability as meeting the needs of the present without compromising the the ability of future generations to meet their own needs but unfortunately at this point it doesn’t look like just minimizing waste emissions and resource usage we are quickly running out of all of those things what we need to be doing at this point is we need to be look at replenishing and regenerating and I’ll go on to talk a little bit more about what those things mean later so why do consumers want it well I was actually asked to do this webinar off the back of some really interesting um uh uh research that the council did on sustainability in businesses and I went away and did a little bit of my own research I wanted to share with you so 80% of people in the UK are concerned about the climate crisis um that surprised me I thought that it would probably be much lower than that but it’s 80% 55% of UK consumers say living sustainably is important for society and they try to make sustainable choices where they can 30% are less likely to stop buying if a brand is found guilty of greenwashing compared to a global average of 23% and I’m going to talk a bit more about greenwashing later on and then lastly 79% of global respondents stated that they were very likely to choose a particular retailer if they offered a wider assortment of sustainable options in store so these are really really helpful statistics that give us an overview of of what your customer wants and I’m really hoping that this gives you the confidence to you know start getting you know start trying some things so let’s look at the benefits of being sustainable um there are lots of different benefits I think that there there is um a misconception that becoming a more sustainable business is going to be really time consuming for you it’s going to cost you a lot of money it’s going to alienate some of your customers um and in some cases those things may be true but there are lot of great benefits that come with becoming a more sustainable business so you attract more eco-aware customers um you increase Employee Engagement because they feel part of of of something bigger they feel part of an initiative that’s bigger than them it can in a lot of cases lower your operating costs um because you’re doing things like reducing waste um it will help you to comply with regulations now um these things are kind of coming in quite slowly um and probably a lot of talk in the news at the moment may lead you to believe that a lot of things have been getting shut down and there isn’t a lot of growth in in that area there are things going on behind the scenes and it’s really important that you get ahead of that now because when things come into place quite abruptly later on you might come a Cropper um it makes you a more in uh attractive investment opportunity now you might not be looking or thinking about investment but um there are lots of funds and um angels and VCS out there who are really interested in supporting sustainable businesses um and also as you guys know there are incredible grant opportunities too being offered by the government they also help to drive innovative ways of thinking um and we’re going to cover that a little bit bit more later so I thought that first of all we could just kind of look at this um at this list of jargon because I’m going to touch on a few of these words later on these may be things that you’ve heard come up um that you weren’t really 100% sure what they meant um so we can talk about them quickly here so ghg is just um shortened to greenhouse gases and those are the gases that trap heat and long wave radiation in the atmosphere and that causes global warming Net Zero so this is the balance between emitted greenhouse gases and the amount that is then being removed from the atmosphere and this can be achieved in two ways so you can do that via minimizing your greenhouse gases or offsetting or both um there are a lot of different schools of thought around this um a lot of big businesses can sometimes be greenwashing when they say that they’re Net Zero because all they’ve done is bought lots of offsetting credits say to plant trees um and they haven’t actually minimized any of their emissions which which in my mind is you know sort of not not really the point of the whole thing um so renewable energy does what it says on the tin it’s energy from renewable non-fossil sources so for example wind solar tidal geothermal Etc um because we’re an island um we have access to all of these things and they are generating a lot of power um I do know of some small businesses who are have solar panels on their roof they’re doing geothermal warming um and they’re in some cases selling energy back to the grid because they’re producing too much um circular so circular economy is based around the idea of reuse and regeneration of materials and products and it needs to keep things in use indefinitely so it’s no longer um a linear way of thinking it’s a more circular way of thinking where when we create products or Services we think about what is the end of life of this product can it be taken apart can it be reused can it be recycled is it compostable um those are all things um uh including things like resale recycling um upcycling and um rental these are all circular ways of doing business um and life cycle analysis so um life cycle analysis is when we assess the environmental impacts associated with all stages of the life cycle of a commercial product process or service so as I was saying previously with the circular one you’re not just thinking about making um a product selling the product and then forgetting about it you are thinking about what is the life cycle of that how many times does it need to be washed can it be taken apart and reused is it compostable is it recyclable Etc and then I just want to touch on understanding emission Scopes really briefly because um this is the the basis for all greenhouse gas reporting in the UK so scope one are greenhouse gas emissions that your business make directly so for example running cars or gas boilers um these are very easy for you to measure and track scope two these are emissions that you create indirectly and come from where the energy you purchase and produced so um for example emissions caused when generating electricity for your building those are your scope two emissions now scope three emissions it gets a bit tricky here this is everything else and if that sounds overwhelming that’s because it is um it can make up around 70% of your business’s total emissions footprint and it’s the hardest to address because it comes from other places in your supply chains so for example um this lip balm um I bought from a local business so um I would need to know how the packaging was made where it was made how it got to me I’d need to know where all of the raw ingredients for this lip balm was made where they were grown how they got to me who was involved in that process Etc the labeling how is the labeling created it’s a lot right so as I say it’s the overwhelming bit and I just kind of want to address all of that because I think that a lot of people can get really hung up on one of my emissions and it’s definitely a very good thing to be uh interested in and to have an idea of um and he was mentioning that you have access to some carbon literacy training which I really um really encourage you to take because it’s it’s a really good background to have but it’s not the be and end all so I’m now going to go on to talk to you a bit more about those other things so let’s first look at environmental impact now um many people think that sustainability is just about environmental impact but it’s not it’s it’s a lot more complicated than that it’s marrying up the environmental and the social so we’re going to talk about both of those now so here are some examples of environmentally focused issues that you may come up with for your business and the goals that you might decide to set for yourself so um this could cover renewable energy so for example um this could look like minimizing carbon emissions and your footprint switching to renewable energy um an offsetting program like tree PL planting or peep bog restoration um reduce ing water usage and waste so um again going back to that product life cycle analysis you might be able to see where a lot of water is used in the supply chain say for instance for this lip balm um but it could also be on site um on premises as well um looking at where you’re producing too much waste both in terms of water and and other types of waste use less resources as well so limiting the use of Natural Resources is um using recycled materials more and recycling more effectively using regenerative resources like bamboo or hemp is incredible um I realized I didn’t put a regenerative definition in there so I’m going to give you a quick one here um so regenerative um is regenerating or giving back what’s being removed um and this looks at things like soil fertility animal livestock rainforest Etc um you know it’s giving back what we’ve removed so that ecosystems can can continue to exist and can continue to create the resources that we need and then the final one is um is banking and this is often one that people don’t really think about so you could switch your banking that’s really easy and often cheap sometimes money-saving thing to do so um you can look at your Investments and your pensions who you’re banking with as well who you’re business banking with generally disruptor Banks like um starling and Tide are better I would say probably the ultimate in Eco and ethical banking is triodos Bank as well um but generally High Street Banks um have been uh known to have invested your money in things like fossil fuels and also arms as well and if that doesn’t match up with your values I highly recommend you take a look at what your bank might be up to and think about switching now social impact so um this covers people basically it it covers how your business impacts people um the people that work directly for you um the people that work in the supply chain that make your products um your your uh community so your business Community your local community your customers and it’s about valuing those people so examples of um some issues and some goals that could um sit inside social impact are paying a living wage as opposed to paying a minimum wage um and you should check what these are locally both in your area and in your supply chain so say for example I knew that the tin for my lip balm um was being made somewhere in India I would check to see what local living wage would look like um and then I would also check that that is actually a living wage because unfortunately in some countries they like to keep their official living wage quite low in order to um uh uh draw in uh companies come and work with them but workers can’t actually exist on that living wage so it’s really important if that’s a if that’s a value to you that you do your your research there um and that goes into the second one which is ensuring quality of life so other people that work in your business in your supply chain or in your local community are they empowered are they educated do they have access to unions do they have access to flexible working if they need it do they have um uh special needs in terms of accessibility or send needs or neurodiversity um supporting diversity so giving voices to underrepresented people um are you creating products um in in uh representative ways do you know who makes your products or who who makes the ingredients or the materials that go into your products um do you know what inspires them why they do that job could they be doing a different job instead of this job and it all of this of allows you to understand how people are working with you um whether or not you might be doing a little bit of cultural appropriation there and then finally supporting local communities so um your local community and the ones connected within your supply chain so you know do they have access to good schools youth groups elderly groups lgbtq communities um young offenders for example um a great example of a business that I have worked with in the past um the way that they supported social impact was they um had their pieces made in a women’s prison by working groups there um and they supported them with Fair wages um and they were giving them a new skill that’s an example of how you can have a social impact so let’s move on to identifying your problem areas in your business so before you can set your goals you really need to understand what your issues are and what your impact is so as I was saying previously don’t feel like you need to jump straight into um emission Scopes um you know tracking and Reporting particularly in scope 3 um can be difficult time consuming pricey especially if you’re a small business I mean if that’s something that you really want to do like I said I suggest you take the carbon literacy session and you know maybe if you apply for the grant money that’s something that you want to use it on um but I’m going to look at some other ways that you can identify problems so you can start by compiling customer supplier team feedback and this can help you identify where to start because you understand where people feel strongly and where you can make your biggest impact right so your customers might want less packaging your staff might be worried about how far they have to drive to get to work um maybe your child attends an underfunded youth group and you want to be able to help them you know you need to think about how you can have an impact through your business there think about your own Valu so do you want to reduce waste do you want to reduce emissions do you want to help your customers make more informed choices do you want to support a social impact charity uh you know like the women’s prism um you can also look at what is loow hanging fruit th those are great places to start can you optimize your recycling efforts quickly um you know are you using the right bins um often times we don’t know what’s available in our local era and it’s always worth looking at um can you ask some of your employees to cycle to work or share a ride share on the way to work um can you switch some light bulbs or can you switch your energy Supply up um also look at what support is available in your local area quite often there’s a lot of support a lot of government support for things offering grants for um Energy Efficiency Waste Management social Enterprise Partnerships Etc um get involved in local business groups on Facebook to find these but also obviously speak speak to Andy and the team because they know what’s going on and they really want to be able to help you so let’s look at crafting your goals so you may have seen this before this is how to craft a smart goal um so I recommend that when you put together your goals um you revisit them regularly just to kind of keep you on track and it will also help you to keep up to date with Innovation that’s going on with grants and off and opportunities for your business Etc um okay so I just kind of put a little example at the bottom here and I’m going to get to the global goals bit in a minute so for example I will switch 50% of our packaging to recycled sourced within six months so this is a smart goal because it’s specific I’m just thinking about my my my packaging and how it’s recyclable um or sorry from recycled sources um it’s measurable because I’ve said 50% of that packaging achievable because I’ve said within six months but we can always move that whatever is achievable for you right it’s relevant because you know I’ve spoken to my customers and I’ve spoken to my staff and they’ve told me that they wish that they could recycle my packaging or that I obtained it from recycled sources and then timed because I’ve said that I’m going to do it within six months and that’s generally sort of the best way to do it in order to actually create a clear goal that you understand your that your staff and your team understand that’s really really important um and something that you can measure when you go back to it in six months time okay maybe I only managed to switch 30% okay so I’m going to aim to do another 30% in the next six months you know and then you can you can actually work actively towards reaching those goals um so the global goals so let’s take a quick look at this this is quite a nice um easy way to find an objective um because the global goals for sustainable development are um uh well they’re globally known about um they’re widely understood and a lot of businesses when they align themselves to one of these goals it kind of takes the faf out of helping your customer or your suppliers or your community to understand what your values and what your goals are what you’re aligned to as a business um so the if you haven’t come across these before these are the global goals are a collection of 17 interl objectives designed to serve as a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet now and crucially in the future because going back to our sustainability definition this is about you know providing for people in the future right so [Music] um now you can go ahead and you can start to create a road map or a policy document that you can keep Liv say you can put it in Google map sorry in Google Docs um and it will help you to keep yourself and your team accountable it doesn’t have to be fancy you can put it anywhere you like so I’m actually going to take and and give you an example of what I mean by creating a goal around these Global goals and give you a couple of examples and I’m going to give you an environmental example and a social example as well so this first one I’ve selected number six clean water and sanitation so you can start to think about what that looks like for your business um obviously all businesses are different um the ways that you operate um are never the same so take a you know have have a think between you and your team what does clean water and sanitation mean to you so it might look like reducing Water waste in your supply chain say for example you create t-shirts or you sell t-shirts how much water is used in the supply chain of that t-shirt that you’re stocking take a look it’s often it’s a shocking amount of water that is wasted um can you help to reduce that can you help your supplier to reduce that or can you switch to a different cotton supplier maybe maybe that’s the answer maybe you can switch to a recycled cotton supplier or you can um find a maker who uses deadstock cotton which is um a fabric that has been usually bought by a brand and then is just never used um it it’s sort of left um you can can you use water safe chemicals educate yourself on what those look like for you and your business and and go about starting to implement that can you donate to a Water charity as well that’s quite a nice easy way of aligning your business with a value especially it can be customer facing um and on the worksheet that I’m going to give you guys afterwards um you’ll see that there is an amazing um integration for digital businesses called virtue and you can plug this in to your Shopify or your woocommerce or whatever it is that you’re using if you’re selling online and you will give you an option to align yourself with a charity that you want to align yourself with and either make a donation through sales yourself or encourage your customers to make a donation and it’s very quick and easy to do they brand it all up for you I I highly recommend it um so let’s move on to uh no poverty um so this is our social impact one um I know no poverty can feel like a really big thing um a lot of these things are really really big things what matters is how how you’re addressing it right in your small way um so again going back to paying living wages are you doing that it’s really really important that that you that you try to do that as much as possible because it really makes a difference to people’s lives can you donate to food Banks um that’s a big one at the moment or can you donate some stock to um to uh food banks or can you um set up a charitable partner uh where you move um excess stock to for example or can you contribute you know leftover sandwiches or bread at the end of the day from your bakery to a local homeless shelter or a local um uh community support group for example can you support education education is a really big one around poverty um can you help with local initiatives for example again can you donate to a charity okay so we’re going to have a look at what some other possible solutions might look like to try and just inspire you really in your business to think about what these could be um so can you reduce your energy consumption uh and that could be anything from um how your stock and supplies get to you um are you having everything flown to you can you switch to Road or to um shipping things both of those things are much more environmentally friendly than having things flown can you switch suppliers can you switch um Hardware so um are you um are you using eco-friendly Hardware can you buy Hardware from um places that repur Pur it and again in the worksheet sorry in the resource sheet that I’m going to send you guys afterwards there are some examples there of some some places that you can use um proper Waste Management so um are you properly identifying all of the areas in which you can be recycling can you be composting that’s another one can you be um encouraging people to um to compost your packaging or your products um are you educating them as to how they can properly dispose of things are you recycling are you reusing are you offering repairs are you repairing things for other people could you implement a rental service again in the resource sheet if you’re an online business or if you have an online store there are Integrations that can very very easily help you become a resale business it’s amazing and it’s great because it’s an additional Revenue stream for you you don’t have to create any additional product but you’re also helping to keep things in uh in use for longer can you lower your digital emissions this is a really great one because it’s free and it’s very very quick to do um so in your business I’m sure you send emails to people can you reduce the amount of emails that you’re sending um I use slack for internal chatter so that my team aren’t constantly sort of going back and forth can you say less thank you emails we produce so many emissions because we just send an email back to someone saying thanks yeah I received that can you just send less thank you emails can you switch your hosting server there are tons of green hosting servers available um that run on renewable energy and you want to choose one that runs their servers using renewable energy not one that’s offsetting um can you contribute to Charities um so you know going back to what I was saying previously about social impact is there anything going on within your local community that really um that really resonates with you I also work with a small jewelry business who um one one of the one of the main reasons that she set up her business was to empower young Indian girls to get a proper education and so through all of the products that she sells she donates a percentage of um of her profits to um an education um charity in India think about how you’re empowering the Next Generation as well how are you helping children in your area to understand what their responsibilities are in terms of energy consumption Waste Management uh reusing recycling Etc can you switch your packaging suppliers can you introduce reuse or loaning maybe you want to start introducing refill options in your shops those are everywhere at the moment especially where I live um can you loan some packaging so can you um can you charge people a small um uh returnable amount for a jar of whatever it is that they buy for you that they bring the jar back is that something you can do can you um reduce your emissions through transport sorry I have actually already touched on this but you know ask your C ask your um ask your staff how they get to work can they carp can they cycle can they get a bus or a train if they feel safe to do that obviously okay so now we’re going to look at green washing so hopefully you’re feeling a little bit clearer about what your goals might be um what those solutions to those goals might be now you need to talk about your efforts so by communicating your journey you increase trust in your business which which is inital and it it helps to improve customer attention and marketing and brand awareness so going back to what we were saying about um attracting those customers who are looking for an eco-friendly or an ethical uh shop in their local area but when we talk about green marketing and communication we have to look at green washing too um and I did touch on green washing earlier but we’re going to look at it a bit in a bit more detail so green washing is when you communicate a false or unverified claim that your business or product is eco-friendly um or green you know you might use any of those words um the new green claims code um is now being enforced by the competition and markets Authority in the UK they’ve gone after the big fish you might have seen that um Brands like um H&M Zara and um Asda had to pull certain ranges because it didn’t meet the criteria and they were found to be greenwashing oh actually sorry they weren’t found to be greenwashing they knew they would be found to be greenwashing so they pulled those ranges before they could be be asked about it um so this the competition markets Authority in the UK stipulates that it can be as simple as using the words Eco or green Etc or using green colors or images like leaves and trees when it is misleading to do so right so let’s talk about that a little bit more and I’ve put together some case studies here for you to help you understand what green Washington look like so BP we all know BP they changed their name to Beyond petroleum and publicly added solar panels to gas stations they were however called out for misleading the public with its aders Ms that focused on BP’s lowcar carbon Energy Products because more than 96% of its annual spend is on oil and gas and people people don’t really like being lied to in that respect right Starbucks so in 2018 Starbucks released a straw less lid as part of its sustainability Drive however this lid contained more plastic than the old straw and lid combined they claimed that the lid was recyclable but um as some of you may know um it was pointed out to them that only 9% of the world’s plastic is recycled and if you go along to um the uh uh understanding your plastic Workshop that that these guys are also offering you you’ll learn a lot more about that so obviously they were called out for that people didn’t really appreciate them um greenwashing about that H&M conscious they were criticized by the Norwegian customer Authority for misleading marketing of their conscious collection because the information given regarding sustainability just wasn’t sufficient and especially given that the conscious collection was advertised as a collection with environmental benefits so the key word there is benefits they insinuated to their customers that by buying something from their conscious collection that customer was then by um you know uh by by making that action was benefiting the environment it wasn’t having any environmental benefits at all so they had to pull the collection all together because they misled people in that respect right um Oley so Oley was um had their ads banned by the advertising standards Authority um because they made unsubstantiated claims about the carbon footprint of one of their products um compared to uh dairy products they insinuated that it was across their products and it wasn’t it was one product and it wasn’t even the product that was mentioned in the advert so they got in a lot of trouble for that but they owned the problem and they created a website um called fc.com and they’re now documenting their sustainability journey through that website I highly recommend you take a look it’s a good website they they basically own every single mistake they’ve ever made um okay so let’s look at how you can not be greenwashing so is unlikely that the CMA are going to come after a small business like yours however the rules being implemented in the EU to you need need to be prepared for what’s going to come because it’s going to it’s going to start getting quite strict um but the good news is as long as you’re telling the truth it’s fine you you’re not going to you’re not going to have a problem you have to make sure that the claims that you make are verified and that this verified information is publicly available to customers that’s really important go back over any green claims that you may be making and ensure that they are specific and provable so for example you have research certification accreditation Etc to back that up and that this information is easy for your customer to find that’s very very um important the easiest way to avoid greenwashing is by being transparent so take the customer on a journey add a sustainability road map page to your website and tell customers what you’ve done what you’re doing and what you plan to do this really humanizes your business because they will um they’ll see that you know you you do have values you are trying you might not be getting it right all the time no one can because our understanding of what is sustainable and what is not sustainable is kind of constantly shifting but they see you’re doing something and you’re talking about it and you’re taking them along the journey and they like that label products clearly and provide resources online for customers using QR codes to um ensure that you’re complying so for example if you um are um in your store or if you are um attending a market for example and and I had this lip balm on offer that says that it is organic vegan and handmade I would have a small sign next to my lip balms with a QR code on it with a link to my website that had a page that explained how specifically it was organic how specifically it was vegan and how specifically it was handmade it seems like a lot of work but once you put it in place you’re golden so I hope that this has empowered you to feel more confident going forward in your journey to be more sustainable don’t forget there is no such thing as 100% sustainable we all just doing our best honesty and transparency are the key to building trust with your customers and suppliers and ultimately for creating a more positive impact so um you can become a member of the whip if you wish if you want to continue your journey surrounded by other business Founders and entrepreneurs who are doing the same things as you and feel supported in that um that’s what we do at the whip we also offer resources and events um as well
