And hello everyone! Today, we’re meeting for a video in the Marais Poitevin, for a two-day cycling getaway… by bike, but not only. Come on, I’ll explain everything right after the credits. So for this little getaway, we’ll be based in La Garette, where it will be our base camp. We’ll pitch the tent there, and we’ll sleep two nights there. Well, that saves us from taking everything in terms of tent, sleeping bag, etc. So we’re traveling a little lighter. For this little getaway, I won’t be alone: Sandra, my wife, will be there. In fact, I already went through there a few months ago during my Tour de France by bike, and I thought at the time that it would be nice to do it again as a couple. Since we’ve never done it together and it’s not very far from home, it was the perfect opportunity for a stylish little weekend. By the way, I’ll take this opportunity to drop you a little info: I recently set up a Buy Me a Coffee account. It’s a site that allows you to make a small donation to support the channel. If you’d like to lend a hand, the link is in the description. A big thank you to Émilie, Julien, Kevin, and CR7, who were the very first to support the channel on Buy Me a Coffee. A huge thank you to you. So, for this first loop of just over 50 kilometers, we’re heading west. First nice stop: the Abbey of Saint-Pierre de Maillezais. A place steeped in history, perched on an ancient island in the middle of the marshes. In medieval times, it was one of the most important religious centers in the area. Today, it’s mainly an opportunity to take a short break to cool off, because at the end of August, the sun is beating down! 🎵 [Music] 🎵 Since Sandra only has a road bike, we couldn’t afford to ride it here, since there are quite a few unpaved areas. So we had to rent a bicycle. This is what they provided us. It’s not bad. Okay, it rattles everywhere, there’s noise everywhere, but it does the job! In my opinion, this bike has never done as many miles as today, since we’re going to do 56–57 km, I think. And clearly, this bike is made to do 10–12 km. The end of the afternoon is approaching, it’s time for a refreshment stop. We stop at a convenience store to buy something to eat for tonight. It must be said that convenience stores, a bit like bakeries, are the official HQ for bicycle travelers. It’s ultra strategic: you can find them everywhere, even lost in the middle of nowhere. And above all, it allows you to travel lighter, without having to lug around 3 days’ worth of food. We keep room for the really useful stuff. And hey, it’s also the perfect excuse to treat yourself to a little treat or two… — How are you, Mister Bean? After this break, the rest of the route will be more shaded. From here, we really enter the wet marsh, also called the Green Venice. It’s a real labyrinth of canals, small paths, bridges, and footbridges. A peaceful atmosphere guaranteed. 🎵 [Music] 🎵 Okay, we’re arriving very close to the campsite. This is the end of the first stage of this mini-trip to the Marais Poitevin. Hop. Watch out, watch out… We almost got murdered by the campsite barrier 😄 For this first day, we drove a little over 52 km, easy. And for those who always ask me for the route tracks: don’t panic, I’ll put the Strava links for the activities in the description. You can view or download them, if it makes you want to do the same trip. 🎵 [Music] 🎵 Well, this morning, we were woken up by a gang of bloodthirsty sheep. 🎵 [Music] 🎵 We set off towards Niort, and this is already our second day of driving. We did 50–51 km yesterday… — 52 exactly. And we’re not too loaded down, simply because we left the tent at the campsite. On this little trip, we sleep in the same place each time, and we do two loops from La Garette: one to the west, one to the north. That way, we’re safe, we have everything there, we have the truck next door. And then, we were able to sleep in a luxury tent, fitted out by Sandra. — Yeah, I’ll show you: we have a real duvet, a fitted sheet, an inflatable mattress, and even the cushions from home. Oh, but perfect! There you go, and the 3-person tent anyway. — Not bad, the 3-person tent – 3 seconds. So there you go, we’re better set up than usual, because we have the truck right behind us. We were able to take the big tent. This format of bike tour, where you come by car or train, where you set up a base camp for two or three days and then travel around it in loops, it’s really a good plan. It lightens the logistics, it makes the trip simpler, more relaxing. And above all, it allows you to take the time to really discover a region, without rushing. So yes, it’s not pure roaming. But precisely, for those who are starting out, it’s a great gateway. Much less intimidating, and just as nice to experience. When you arrive in Niort, you take the time to discover the city slowly. No stress, you settle down for a hearty breakfast, and you wander around the center a bit. 🎵 [Music] 🎵 Niort is really pretty, especially around the historic center, with its small streets, its squares, and of course the famous dungeon, the city’s emblem. — Not bad! Living in a dungeon is… Okay, let’s leave Niort. We’ve eaten, and we’re going back to the campsite. — Niort, I think it’s a pretty nice city. — What did you think of it? — Honestly, it deserves to be known. The architecture is magnificent. There aren’t many cars, so quite a few bikes and passersby. — It’s true, it’s super calm, super pleasant. It’s beautiful, it’s… So, we’ll thank Niort for their huge check for 0 €! 😄 But it’s a great place to visit. Niort is pretty. The Marais Poitevin is nice too. But ultimately, the best way for us to discover it… was by boat. We took a little boat ride yesterday, before starting the bike ride, and frankly, it was the best way to discover the marsh. 🎵 [Music] 🎵 Indeed, for us, the boat ride was clearly the best part of the trip. It’s really where we enter the more secret, wilder marsh, far from the roads and paths. There are places you can only discover by boat – and that changes everything. Silence, greenery everywhere, just the sound of the water. The atmosphere is magical. 🎵 [Music] 🎵 As expected: headwind on the way back… huh! — No! You told me tailwind! Come on, in a few kilometers, we’ll arrive at the campsite. That’s the end of this mini-bike trip. What was I going to say?… I don’t know anymore. If you haven’t subscribed to the channel, subscribe. Do what you want, but I think it’s cool. — Give it a thumbs up! — There you go, thumbs up, Sandra said. And see you soon for new adventures! Come on… bye!
