My mid-tour ‘Transit Day’ – hopping on a train back into the Netherlands and a few miles cycling into Haarlem, nicely setting up the last couple of days’ cycling down the Dutch coastline.
Once again the cycleways – straight out of Schiphol airport – were unbelievably good!
Thanks again for watching and happy cycling, folks!
[Music] i’ll put my life in a bottle Something to guide your way [Music] Even if you’re too scared to follow [Music] there’s a light in each new day [Music] If the moon gives up rising the sun stops it shining you know you’ll have a land to hold As we wait on the timing together we’re finding there’s more than one way to go [Music] Now more than any other city I can recall at the present time Antworp is really a place where if you look up you just see how beautiful the the city is You know there’s the usual kind of cafes and shops selling the the typical kind of homogeneous crap that you get everywhere in every big city in the world Uh but some of the buildings just you know above the first floor are absolutely stunning And then you get these places here I must have seen this square on a dozen YouTube videos over the years of people traveling through Europe And it’s very surreal to be right in the middle of it now and the big cathedral It’s a very gaudy uh clock face they’ve put in it though I must say Far be it for me to criticize the entrop town council but could have gone with a slightly better clock face But yeah look at these amazing buildings just sort of intricate stonework and I don’t know all sorts of crests and emblems and shields on the buildings that you probably can’t see Well that was a very enjoyable half an hour just tootling around the city Like 3 miles an hour and uh we’re just arriving at the Grand Central Train Station Yesterday I went in the the entrance just here I’m kind of guessing the front is around this way It’s absolutely stunning It’s um I mean I don’t know what the history behind it is but it beggars belief that they made that into a train station See if I can get it in one shot behind me Something like that So that’s the outside but wait till you see the inside Heat [Music] Heat I know you’re tired of this [Music] One up and three You’re chasing after your heart knows where to go If the moon gives up rising the sun stops it shining We know you’ll have a land to hold As we wait on the timing together we find it There’s more than one way to go [Music] Okay made it to Skibal and just going to leave the airport Hopefully pick up a cycle way out west towards Holland Well folks talk about leaving an airport in style I uh just walked out of the terminal building cross the road and just picked up immediately this amazing little cycle line which uh hopefully will take me uh north and then pick up a road for about 10 miles heading west And destination for this evening is uh Harlem I’m not quite sure whether it’s a big town or it’s a city in its own right So we just got airplanes taxiing ahead It’s a bit noisy I’ve never uh cycled away from a UK airport but be very surprised if they have this kind of infrastructure in place So yeah as I was saying the destination for today is Harlem and then from tomorrow I kick start two days just meandering down the coast And uh how cool is this bicycle tunnel under the runway Yeah I’m just blown away I I’m just continually blown away by the cycling infrastructure in this country It’s just a little glimpse of how it should be [Music] Heat [Music] Heat [Music] [Music] Heat Heat [Music] there [Music] Well this place has got very cool vibes [Music] and tonight’s hotel Easy check in as they always are And um yeah here’s today’s room Hotel number three Bit of an orangey theme Lots of I’m going to have something orangey for uh for dinner But yeah going to um just chill out cool down a little bit It’s another hot one today and um not a lot of cycling Probably did I don’t know 15 miles something like that Dead easy day Uh but it’s got me to the perfect spot for two days just tracking the coastline south So really looking forward to uh the next bit of riding over the next couple of days There is a um a UN summit at uh the Hague which is my destination for tomorrow Uh now it’s not until next week but um quite a few people I’ve been chatting to last couple of days have said that they they start locking things down early So it might be that certain streets are closed or certain places you can’t get to Uh it doesn’t really bother me cuz I’m not really doing massive touristy stuff but uh yeah it be interesting just to see uh even though it’s not for a good few days just how much it’s it’s starting to lock down uh this weekend Um but yeah anyway blathering Just going to uh chill out cool down and then we’ll pop out and uh get something to eat And uh yeah what is this day three I suppose Easy day Not a lot of cycling but uh in the bag And uh yeah Harlem looks stunning Looking forward to having a little mooch around later on So yeah I’ll uh catch up with you in a wee while [Music] [Music] Heat

8:19 Oh, one of the infamous solar roadway experiments. Please don't think those are (or should be) normal. Anyway, In answer to your remark in part 2: So, are the cycle lanes in Belgium as good or not? Though honestly, it does not matter probably. Nowadays, all north/west European countries are pretty good, Flanders, Danmark, Germany, from what I hear, even Paris and Poland.
Excellent video brilliant network of cycling lanes and some fabulous architecture stunning buildings. Take care. B. K.
Hi Martin, yes I can see why your blown away with the infrastructure amazing and jealous at the same time, Antwerp certainly is a beautiful city which ofcourse had heavy British involvement in ww1 and ww2 in it's defence and liberation, amazing to get on your bike direct from the airport, and Harlaam another attractive city, again enjoy and thanks for sharing Martin 👍👏👋
It strikes me how "normal" cycling is in the Netherlands and Belgium. It's refreshing to see cargo bikes and people in regular clothes, on basic bikes, just going from A to B. It's clearly just another form of transport, and not anything you'd need specific kit for, apart from a bike.
It's a shame it's not the same in the UK, apart for myself who cycles to get places, I only know people who cycle for sport. Not that that's a bad thing, but to have an alternative to driving or walking somewhere, and for that alternative to be a bike would be good, but without the nice cycle infrastructure, and a fair chance your bike won't be nicked outside the supermarket, it's never going to be just another form of transport.
Cheers for your videos showing how things are in the Netherlands, I really must buy a better bike and do a tour there. I don't think my Sturmey Archer 3 speed heavy shopper bike is going to cut it!
Keep up the good work chap!
WOW! especially Antwerp station.
Really great Martin.Love the architecture in Belgium having been there several times on motorcycle tours. You captured it well on the video.I agree with your sentiments comparing cycling in UK and Holland – there is no comparison. We could never reach that standard here. How much fitter would our nation be if we had a similar system! Good stuff mate!
I always prefer ships crossing over a cycle line, much quieter than planes.
Fantastic to see all the flags on the Stadhuis, my sense of pride is heightened by the fact that my son is a stonemason and has done some carving there.
Good choice, Haarlem. Lovely place and I know you are going to enjoy the next two days!
Worth mentioning that this infrastructure enables lots of user groups especially disabled.
Good riding Martin 👍
Absolutely amazing Architecture, was in Amsterdam last month, same with the Architecture there and was well impressed with the cycling infrastructure, hopefully going back soon, will be taking the Brompton with me, I can’t understand the negativity towards cycling in the U.K.
Cracking vid Martin,, and was good to see how easy the train journey was, 👍
Your commute to work will soon bring you back to reality 😉
Haarlem is fantastic for a trip along the coast. Enjoy!
I think it’s called “ Living the cyclists dream” The station is epic and looked clean and well managed.
The infrastructure is just amazing. Your videos are brilliant. Keep them coming.
Just found your channel & watched the last 3 episodes. As a Dutchman I'm glad you like our cycling infrastructure. As a cyclist I avoid the UK because of their (general) negative attitude towards cycling. They are so carbrained, just like Americans. If you like the cycling in The Netherlands you also might want to try out cycling in Denmark. Greetings!
Loved these videos. Looks like a wonderful trip.
You can cycle out of Glasgow airport and over the Clyde to join the route to Loch Lomond
I'm looking forward to the next video, as that one is probably going to be the coast ride. I love cycling through the dunes on the Dutch coast.
Great video and scenery 👌
