if you’re considering a new driveway you’ve probably come across three popular options you’ve got resin bound surfacing you’ve got tarmac or block Paving but which one is right for you well today I wanted to share all of the details for you to compare from cost to durability Aesthetics maintenance requirements weather resistance and install time so you can make the right decision so first up let’s talk resin bound surfacing a resin bound surface is made up of natural Aggregates which are mixed with a resin binder which is TR down by hand to create a smooth and seamless finish now for those of you who are new to the channel well firstly subscribe but secondly we actually do run a resin balance surfacing business so obviously we have a preference towards that type of surfacing so let me just share with you what the benefits are and then we’ll discuss some of the drawbacks here too the first and probably one of the biggest benefits to resin bound surfacing is its aesthetic appeal now resin surface is made up of natural Aggregates and because of that we’re able to have over 40 different color options available here in our showroom and equally customers can choose to have designs in eded into that surface as well probably one of the most well-known ones was a company up north somewhere who actually did Tyson Fury’s driveway and actually implemented the Gypsy King logo into the surface I obviously can’t take credit for that cuz we didn’t do it but it just goes to show the extent of the designs that can be put into a surface we’ve done the odd colored border a few Stars here and there and we’ve even done a cat in our surfaces would you believe which if this is your thing then you can have that put into your surface this too regardless it can be customizable and it also enhances the curb appeal of your property when you have a resin bound surface installed another one of the core benefits to resin bound surfacing is its permeability it’s the one that surprises customers the most but it will actually drain water the equivalent of 25 L of water per square meter per second let me grab a hose pipe and I’ll show you you can see the water drains straight through without an issue at all so you won’t see any puddles on your surface but what about durability how does a inbound surface stack up over the long term well I think durability is important when you layer in the context of how it looks like when it’s first installed versus how it looks perhaps 5 years into the future and there are a couple of variables to consider here such as ground movement which may affect the surface along with how well that surface is maintained by the customer but for the most part if the surface has been prepared correctly with a full excavation and dig out and a complete base construction it’s rare that the resin surface will crack if it does it’ll be as a result of ground movement taking place which has cracked through into the surface not as a result of just the resin cracking on its own if the surface does break apart which unfortunately we have seen in the local area from other local installers that is only as a result of poor installation quality taking place where either the surface has not been laid at the correct depths or alternatively a low resin to hardener volume has been used and it’s not necessarily because the resin system itself is fundamentally FL flawed also because it’s natural Aggregates it will never actually discolor and therefore just with a simple jet wash and some Surface Cleaner you will actually bring that surface back up to looking pretty much as good as new all in all making it a very durable and low maintenance surface too but to be transparent resin surfaces do have their drawbacks the first thing being they can be very expensive compared to the alternatives for a full dig out and installation resin companies depending on the complexity of the job and also the geographical location that that company’s B in May charge anything between £0 to 250 a square meter for your average sized instor and we’ll take a look at the average cost for Block Paving and tarmac in just a moment the other downside to resin Mound surfacing is that it requires Professional installation it’s not something that you can do DIY and it’s not something that you can just slap down onto any old surface your installer ideally needs to be not just an expert in groundworks but also needs to fully understand the molecular and chemical composition of both resin and hardener and how they react when they’re mixed together in order to ensure that the job is of a good quality there are technical aspects to a resin bound surface that many installers don’t appreciate and sometimes that can result in poor quality surfacing taking place the other downside being it can be difficult to repair especially driven by the nature of the damage if a resin band surface cracks it can be repaired but it’s just not as easy as that if a block Paving surface were to be damaged where you can just take the blocks out and replace them with new ones depending on the nature of the damage if it’s just a hairline crack in the surface these can be filled so they’re completely unnoticeable I’ll give a shout out here to a company called camox who do a fantastic job when it comes to resin bound repairs and maintenance so that’s resin bound a great product in my personal opinion but what about the other options well now let’s discuss tarmac tarmac is a classic Choice when it comes to driveways it’s made up of combining crushed aggregate with tar to create a durable weather resistance surface now in terms of its benefits the first one that Springs to mind is price between block paven resin and tarmac tarmac is by far the cheapest option available where you’re looking at roughly between 40 to 80 a square meter so it’s certainly a cheaper option but cheaper is also fine if that is something that fits within your budget the second benefit being that tarmac is pretty durable too and a surface should typically last anywhere between 15 and 20 years equally with that durability it’s pretty weather resistant as well it holds up well against heavy rainfall and even Frost the only downside being it can become quite slippery if we do have a frost or if we have extremely heavy downfall then sometimes the drainage on tarmac surfaces aren’t essentially adequate enough to kind of push the water away from your property and sometimes that can lead to flooding in your garage like I had just over this past winter but in terms of some of the other downsides well there are a couple of others to consider the first one being and this is just my personal opinion but tarmac isn’t really the most aesthetically appealing driveway to have cheap yes but goodlooking not so much if I had the option based on pure Aesthetics I would probably go resin first block Paving second and tarmac third but again that’s just personal preference the other downside is that it’s also prone to stains this may be less prominent as we do end up adopting more and more electric vehicles but right now with our normal internal combustion engines then the typical engine oil leak can happen every now and again which can cause staining on t which can be quite cumbersome and difficult to get out that’s not to say that it can’t be cleaned up it just can be a little bit difficult to do so thirdly it’s also susceptible to cracks it’s simply just what happens over time especially with tarm MAAC which can be prone to perishing if it’s not properly maintained so that’s tat but what about block Paving which is another popular servicing option available and here are some of the benefits this is pretty much blasphemy working for a resin bound company but I actually think block Paving is a very aesthetically appealing product and does enhance the curb appeal of a property you do have a fair amount of options in terms of colors and block sizes available they’re not perhaps quite in as abundance as what you would get when you’re choosing resin bound colors but you do still have a decent number of options available the second benefit to block Paving is that it’s really easy to repair especially compared that to tarmac or resin Bound for the areas that are damaged or need replacing it’s as easy as just taking the old blocks out sorting out whatever the problem area is and then just even relaying the same blocks or new blocks to take their place it doesn’t mean the whole surface has got to come up if you’ve just got one small localized problem and installer’s dream you could say when it comes to repairs the third benefit being the price I’ve put price down as a benefit because it’s not exactly the most expensive option and it’s not exactly the cheapest either and it’s kind of somewhere in the middle for your average install it can cost anywhere between about £80 to £120 a square meter it will still set you back a few quid but it’s certainly not the most expensive option out there but then on the flip side there are some drawbacks and characteristics of block Paving that may be a little bit more painful for a customer which you don’t necessarily get with the other surfaces the first issue being block Paving sinking it’s probably one of the biggest issues and actually the first that Springs to mind when I think about a block Paving surface in that they invariably sink over time making the surface uneven and ultimately a trip Hazard the second and probably by far the biggest drawback of block Paving is the fact that it requires high maintenance it’s probably one of the most timec consuming and hardest services to maintain not only do you get weeds and mass which will quite easily anchor into the block work which essentially need removing but also the blocks can quickly discolor and also become quite dirty over time in order to maintain the surface you’re going to need to be weeding it probably quite regularly and then for a full clean it’s going to need a good old jet wash and also resanding too which can be an extremely timec consuming and messy job to do so which one will you choose well be sure to let me know down in the comments section below but here’s a summary of some of the benefits and the drawbacks of these three different servicing options they will certainly serve their purpose and they have different drawbacks and benefits associated with each of them but if you are in the market for a new driveway I’m sure there’s a suitable option for you so hopefully you found that useful if you did so be sure to subscribe to the channel and whilst you’re over here YouTube thinks that you should watch this video next that me I said I’ll see you over in the next one

block paving is often permeable
Would have been nice if you spoke about printed concrete and how it compares.
Hey. Is resin suitable for an agricultural settings where muddy vehicles will be parked on & driven over?
Will mud & dirt get stuck in the permeable surface?
Also how does the permeable surface handle freeze & thaw cycles?
What stops the surface eventually breaking up?
Concrete is the best by far,acid stain any pattern you want , The biggest problem with pavers and resin the uv eats em up
I’m getting quotes to replace my concrete drive which is breaking up due to age believe it or not concrete is the most expensive so far
What do you do if gas and water are coming in under the driveway on an old house, likely to be shallower than newer standards? Can you still whacker pack it?
There is permeable tarmac?
So u work for a resin company… says it all😂
Can resin be installed on a concrete driveway or must the concrete be removed
Laying resin driveways, good and easy diy if you're done a few patios etc.. over the years, did my own, it looks far better than my neighbours "professional" install. basically its a piece of piss for any gen x who has used resins and harderners and can prep & level a smooth surface🎉😊the price per sq ft is a right rip off in my opinion,
Very informative – thanks. Would be interested in similar covering:
Concrete – available now in different colours, plain & pattern imprinted;
Concrete slabs;
Grass Grids;
Gravel.
Tarmac / Asphalt now also available in a range of colours.
if i had a driveway, i wouldn't want tarmac. as for the other 2 options, i'm leaning towards block paving.
Resin for sure
what is the best surface for a steep driveway?
Please stop saying Tarmac. The chances are you & most other people have never seen Tarmac. What you are talking about is bitumen macadam or asphalt. Asphalt & macadam use bitumen as a binder, which comes from oil. Tarmac used Tar, a product produced mainly from burning coal. We don't produce Tar today & there is no call for Tarmac.
It doesn't matter what the surface of the drive is, they will all sink, move & split if the base is inadequate, contaminated, overloaded, washed away or suffers from frost damage. The durability of the surface depends on the choice & proper laying of the base supporting it and the ground beneath.
I live in Northern Ireland and that would be amazing because it rains 60-70% of the time
I have block paving, and it's a right ballache to maintain! It sinks, gets loads of weeds and moss, and yes, you have to jet wash and re-sand it. Then the weeds start the following week.
Have you ever spilled resin rock where you don’t want it, on concrete perhaps, how do you clean up spills and stains
Resin looks awful after after a few years and creates car tracks. Warranties mean nowt once the company has gone bust.
We aren’t doing these in the United States. Any guidance for having it done here? As temperamental is it to cold winters?
My 2 penny worth.
Something to bear in mind. Before you spend your hard earned wedge on a new drive.
Once its finished and all looks pretty, you promptly park your many vehicles on it and then cant see it 😂😂
Go with block paving. Easy to take up if you need to get to pipe work or water pipes, gas pipes or soakaways. Easy to put back.
What about weeds and oil stains on resin drives? A neighbour has resin and gets weeds which I was surprised
I’m looking for something that doesn’t need weeding.
Had all the 3 the and best by far is Tarmac.
