Ghekiere Claims Belgian Road Race Title in Thrilling Binche Finish
BINCHE, BELGIUM – June 29, 2025 – Justine Ghekiere of AG Insurance–Soudal Team has been crowned the new Belgian Road Race Champion after a dramatic and hard-fought victory at the 126th edition of the national championships held today in Binche.
The 132.8-kilometer one-day race saw an aggressive display of tactics and strength, culminating in a thrilling finale on the streets of Binche. The course, known for its challenging sections, tested the mettle of Belgium’s top female cyclists.
The race favorite, reigning World Champion Lotte Kopecky (Team SD Worx–Protime), was highly visible, actively participating in the chase efforts to bring back early breakaways. However, it was Ghekiere who delivered the decisive blow in the closing kilometers. With a powerful surge, she launched a late attack that only Fien Van Eynde (Fenix–Deceuninck Development Team) could follow.
In a nail-biting sprint to the line, Ghekiere proved marginally stronger, crossing first to seize the coveted national title. Van Eynde demonstrated incredible resilience to hold on for a well-deserved second place.
The battle for third place was equally intense, with a chasing group vying for the final podium spot. Young talent Fleur Moors (Lidl–Trek) showed impressive form, outsprinting her companions to secure the bronze medal a few seconds behind the leading duo.
Ghekiere, who famously claimed the mountain jersey at last year’s Tour, now adds the prestigious Belgian road champion’s jersey to her growing list of achievements. Her victory marks a significant moment in Belgian women’s cycling, succeeding the dominant Lotte Kopecky as the nation’s premier road racer. The 126th Belgian Road Championship will be remembered for its exciting finish and the emergence of a new national champion.
