Bikepacking Ems River Day 1: Delfzijl to Westoverledingen

Hi and welcome to WannaGoBiking. My name is Arjan and it is time for a new cycling adventure!
First bikepacking trip of the year ! Peter-Jan and I set out for a 4 day, 375 km trip along the Ems river.
We started off in Delfzijl, taking a ferry to Emden in Germany.

we hope to reach the source of the Ems 
River which is near Bielefeld so yeah excited for this little adventure and I don’t have to 
ask my weatherman about the weather cuz: -should be sunny- should be sunny i’ll take 
that any day all right let’s go, Los Geht’s hello and welcome from sunny Delfzijl where 
myself and Peter-Jan over there are going to go on another bikepacking trip this 
time from Delfzijl in the northeast of the Netherlands towards Emden by boat. the boat is 
arriving over there and then we shall be bike packing along the Ems or Eems, as we call it in Dutch river for 4 days long so that’s the plan and yeah sunny outlook so we we 
can’t wait see you along the way so here we are in Emden after a beautiful 
ride across the Dollart and Ems so hopefully we can find a restaurant to 
get into our proper bikepacking clothes but that should sort itself out all 
right talk to you later greetings from Emden we’ve 
just left the embarkment of the ferry that took us to Emden now on our 
way to the mouth of the Ems River and that’s pretty much where the actual starting point of this trip lies so so here we are almost at the start point i think at this point we’ll have to decide where our actual starting point is of this trip so I think there’s no official mouth  
starting point but we’ll just cycle up another kilometer or so and I think start from there 
officially but yeah this morning we started off in Delfzijl over there now on the other side so, cool 25° 
1st of May fantastic talk to you later hi and welcome to WannaGoBiking from us Peter-Jan and Arjan, we’re about to start our trip down the Ems River that runs  
well from here or actually runs to here as this is the mouth of the Ems River and in 4 days time we hope to reach the source of the Ems River which is near Bielefeld so yeah excited for this little adventure and I don’t have to ask my 
weatherman about the weather cuz it should be sunny -should be sunny i’ll take that any day all right let’s go no Los geht’s downtown EMden beautifully colored with flowers in front of you you see the Otto huus, Otto House and Otto is a very famous comedian in Germany so you see lots of things about Otto here in Emden so see if we can find some first ice cream well we had just had a fantastic ice cream 
here and these are very cute little characters geschichte auf dem Weg, Delft Spucker if I understand it correctly this actually 
depicts a few well- good to nothing guys who just moan and complain all day long and 
spit into the harbor into the water. It’s called Delft here it’s quite funny cuz 
Delft is of course a Dutch city so maybe that refers to the water i don’t know and  
beautiful boat up there city hall i think we’ve seen some of the highlights of Emden i’m 
sure there’s more to see but as always we are running a bit late so yeah we’re going 
to head out and head towards Leer and from there should be another 15k to our destination 
for today after 80k so easy enough ride but yeah still have to make it so yeah let’s 
just continue cycling see you second ferry of the day today is a good day ah what a lovely day to ride 1st of May 25° 
that’s extraordinary well we still have about 25k to go should be arriving 
600, 6:30 I think which is fine so yeah super day so far i think we’ll be 
closing in now on Leer in half an hour or so so that could be a bit busy but 
other than that yeah it’s been blissful country lanes and cyclepaths like this so 
absolutely outstanding all right see you later so here we are a sign; The Ems it’s the third time crossing today expect very 
few more to follow in the next couple of days so we should be well we’re closing in on Leer 
but we’re not going in this time instead we’ll take a a ride shortly I think to our 
destination for tonight right that’s it that’s day one done and dusted we 
are in Westoverledingen i think the little town is called it’s a bit pretty much in between 
Leer and Papenburg and we have got a fabulous room to ourselves it was quite expensive I’d have 
to say but the only problem is that it’s Labor Day today here that means that of course 
nobody’s working we don’t have Labor Day in the Netherlands so it’s always a bit of a surprise 
to me and it also means that the restaurant I was very keen on going to is closed for the day 
so yeah we’re very thin on options i do hope they deliver pizzas here somehow cuz otherwise  
it’s bars well anyways what a fabulous day tomorrow’s going to be a little bit longer but  
I hope equally fun so I invite you all to watch if you want but until then enjoy your rides
