well now you’re talking yeah but may might even go for a full fat Iron Brew collectively this week’s handlebar Heroes once again a slight disclaimer that any views and opinions expressed by any of us on 360 Speedway are those of ours personally and not reflective whatsoever of any of the clubs or associations that we might have always feel always feel a sense of relief when I when I say that out loud okay 360 speeders so um thank you for joining episode 11 um we try I hope I hope it’s hope it’s obvious to you by now that 11 weeks in we we do do try to freshen and keep fresh the speedway discussions that we have we encourage you to help us shape our Speedway discussion agenda and now and again we do try to throw in a few new features and we’re going to debut one right here right now um we’ll try to do this as often as we can i can’t promise it will be every single week but we do have standing by and I’m going to intro introduce him to you now a young man who has uh certainly made the world of Speedway set up and pay attention to his efforts in the last couple of seasons a young man with a big profile and a big talent introducing for the first time on 360 Speedway welcome Dan Thompson good evening Dan how are you hello everyone fine Dan listen thanks thanks for taking some time out Dan i know you’re a busy lad i know you’re uh you’ve only just got back into action again after being laid off and the first question I guess that I wanted to ask you was you know you you you’re two meetings back into your your race return you’ve had a meeting for Glasgow you were very much part of the televised meeting on Monday night at Foxh Hall how is that old left wrist of yours holding up yeah not Yeah not not too bad it’s um it’s been okay so far um could be better but at the same time it could be worse i’m just happy to be back soon enough
i don’t know D i don’t know if any of the other the lads um have ever broken that skiid and you know it’s the tiniest bone in the body practically apart from something in your inner ear perhaps but uh you know I’ve never done it myself but I guess from a if you’re a speedway rider it’s a it’s an an annoying frustrating injury right because you you you rather need to be able to hold on to the bike and operate the clutch simon Kab Stewart is there something you’ve experienced
yeah I broke mine once yeah broke mine once yeah yeah is it about I don’t know joel tell you is it five six five six weeks to get it right is that what you’ve been out yeah it’s been about five weeks for me um still causing me a few little problems but nothing me from I I did I did laugh at Glasgow on Friday night if I’m not mistaken your opening heat it was Glasgow versus Plymouth you you lined up on the start grid beside your your brother Joe and uh he was never going to give you an easy an easy time of it was he no no he gated me in in both the runs of that and that wasn’t really my plan but luckily I managed to just just get by him and uh have a good steady race win to
there there was no quarter given i can I can tell people that what about treatment Dan what have you have you been able to do anything to try and accelerate the the sort of recuperation of the of the skate break laser treatment for example yeah I was Yeah I was um I was originally put in a cast by the hospital but um that kind of made me feel a bit uncomfortable and uh my hands started going a bit of a funny curler so um I had that taken and uh I was having laser treatment and all sorts from uh Steve Williams at team GB and that kind of sp another guy will will will subscribe to this there’s never ever going to be a good time to get a Speedway injury right unless it’s at the end of the season or something like that potentially but uh you know you you were on the you were on the on the eve of that SGP2 qualifier at Glasgow when when you picked up your injury and uh it possibly added insult to injury a little bit yeah it must have rubbed salt into the wounds because I I imagine the SGB2 qualifier was very much in your mind and had been for for the entire season right yeah definitely it was it was disappointing i think sometimes you can get an injury at the right time it gives you a little bit of a break bit of a reset if you’ve been going through it a little bit but um definitely bad time for me i think I was just just getting to where I wanted to be and uh yeah so um just glad to get a wild card for that and I’ll mention that cuz you know it was it was super pleasing to me i I hadn’t personally considered that you you might have landed a wild card spot for SGB2 and and I think it is welld deserved and you know it’s in recognition of you your performances last season and this season but it must have been a real silver lining when you received the the phone call I imagine to say that you you you had a you had a place after all yes it’s it’s good it’s a cool feeling to be racing the best people in the world and uh yeah it’s an opportunity that I wanted to try and achieve this year but at the end of the day next year I’ll be out of that category and just carry on with my league racing so um it’s good to get the chance one last time to have a go at it and um last chance for Lon but but as you say Dan in the company of of the best under 21 category riders on on on the speedway planet so you’re going to be off to Sweden Miller Sweden Ria I think in Latvia and Voyans in Denmark have you been remotely close to either venue before
nove not really done too much abroad racing yet so um be a new experience i’m looking forward to trying some new tracks and getting out there and hopefully uh in the next few seasons we might be able to do something
i’m going to stop grilling you for a second Dan i I don’t know if you I don’t want to flatter myself by suggesting that you might have watched some 360 Speedway content but Stuart and Krabby and Simon um will know for a fact that your name has featured more than once in previous episodes we’ve talked about young the the sort of health of the health state of British Speedway in terms of all the young talent that that that appears to be coming through and has been for a few seasons now and you and your name features quite heavily in that stuart McDonald I hope you don’t mind me putting you on the spot but I know you in particular have singled out as as as being an impressive young rider absolutely i mean Dan I’ve been watching you since the start of the season and the way that you you got on that bike and honestly it’s been phenomenal to watch and great for British Speedway and um you know I don’t think that at your age you know the sky’s is the limit i think when you look at some of the riders that’s round about you and what you’re doing and some of the riders you’re beating week in week out I mean it’s it’s just phenomenal some of the some of the riding you come up with and uh just just on we mentioned earlier on about racing with your brother sorry changed Eric a little bit how do you feel when you sit at the tapes with your brother next to you racing against him does it give you that extra edge
uh not really i wouldn’t say so it’s it’s a bit of a funny one because obviously I want to beat him but at the same time after that I want him to win all of his races um so it’s don’t give me any extra edge if anything I’m probably a bit softer racing than I don’t want to do anything cause him any harm in any way so um always leave him plenty of room and if I can get by then I will
how How do we even know we’re talking to Dan and not Joe I’m trusting you on this Dan i’m trusting you on this sim Simon Lambert I know you I know you are a direct competitor of young Mr problems and then you’re going to well weather permitting in Glasgow on Friday night you’re going to come together on track in in a racing sense Simon you know you’re a you’re a good guy you’re a skipper you’re on the mature side if you don’t mind me saying what do you have any nice words any nice platitudes to share about Dan Thompson I haven’t seen Dan fly floating around the tracks obviously from a younger age and him and Joe and I think at one point Joe was props the better when they started but Dan’s kind of perhaps just took over that role now but uh they’re both very polite young gentlemen and um they both got a good career obviously at the minute obviously Dan’s the talk and to to me I think that’s good there ain’t enough bricks we can you know sort of bull up enough so Dan you you probably take all that to be fair but mate I wish I was in your shoes at your age just milk it mate you’re very levelheaded your feet are on the ground and uh I think you go about your business good you know you obviously your family must be a good support for you and I know that that’s a good thing to have cuz I’ve always had that so yeah mate you you know you just keep doing what you’re doing and uh take it easy on us Friday but everywhere else you know you you’ve been at IPS switch i’m I’m a fan as well as a rider i’m a geek mate but you’ve been like another heat leader really for switcher and that number six spot’s plumbing tough i think six is harder than two in that top leg now i don’t know how you feel about that but uh there’s never an easy race in Speedway but um you’re very quick at the starts and obviously you know yourself if you can get in front it’s a bit easier in it than having to be a passer so I’m all for you mate you just keep doing what you’re doing and keep your feet on the ground and just keep smashing it mate cuz I might be a GBT manager one day you never know that That was actually lovely words Simon listen I really appreciate that um you you you saying that um you’re not a bad lad i keep telling people Simon Lambert is a lovely guy they don’t they don’t believe me but uh there you are right there on camera kabby I know you keep a very keen interest on the sport these days you yourself have mentioned on previous episodes that you admire the progress that Dan’s been making
yeah I mean um I think it’s brilliant what Dan’s doing i hope British Speedway look after these young lads it needs to do because at the end of the day Dan you’re the future you and other lads William Ken he’s another one isn’t he and then there’s another young lad coming through in there um Cooper Cooper Russian

yeah you know British Speedway needs to look after these lads uh help them and advise them everything cuz I say you lads you’re the future of British Speedway british Speedway need you more than ever before you young lads and I think it’s great to see you doing well uh and also the English nothing wrong with the foreign guys but end of the day with British I’m all for the British and it’s great to see you doing well i watched you on Monday I switch um yeah great to see you doing well and you’ll only get better won’t you do you have anybody helping you uh Dan do you have an ex rider anybody behind you helping you
um not not too much i just try and talk to all my teammates obviously it’s it’s been cool being around some of the the top riders in Doy and Emily which you can learn just just from watching them i learn stuff

um but they they also also give good advice and um I think it Speedway is very much still an individual sport you do have to figure stuff out for yourself it’s not as easy not as easy not as easy as What about what about the prospects of the witches this year you know Doy has been in the wars in recent weeks obviously and you know the sheer fact that he gets back on a bike so quickly and does what he does is is incredibly impressive but you know with with Emil and Doy and Tom Brennan in that side and Adam Ellis and and the other guys you know the witches you must be quietly confident that maybe maybe this year could be the year of the witch right yeah I hope so obviously we’ve all a few of us have had injury trouble along the way so far and had a few results that haven’t gone our way um it’s going well we are a very solid team on paper and uh I think we are capable of being in the league it’s just a case of all staying fit and uh all firing on that night in the play
absolutely that Dan if you don’t mind me asking the the question you know you we’ve talked about the SUV 2 it’s your last last go at lifting that title this year and and I know you’ll give it your all that’s the sort of rider that you are but uh you know in terms of sort of personal ambition am I right in thinking Dan that you have I guess by have you could have sat out Poland etc by by choice have you just chosen to focus on on the UK more so than than anywhere else
um a little bit i’ve had a a few places contact me here and there and um I’m just not one of them people i think rushing out there isn’t the best idea cuz I’ve seen so many other guys go when they’re not ready and just is a financial burden if you’re not not going to go out there and score score some good scores so uh I think I’m getting to the stage where it’s uh nearly time but um I’m definitely just taking my time i don’t think there’s much much glint in rushing out there where everything’s going pretty steady here and just keep
I like that D i like that sort of attitude you you kind of focusing on the job in hand you got you got some business to do for for Ipsswitch and and obviously for Glasgow and uh you’re going about your business very well and you know add in those SGB2 trips etc you’re going to be plenty busy in the next couple of months tell you what Derek sorry Dan but what a wise head you’ve got on Young Shoulders i think you’re I think you’re 110% right what you’re saying steady away and everything like that i think that’s brilliant y on young shoulders i’m sure
is that under 24s in Poland down or is that like division one or extra leg uh I’ve had a few offers from uh few of the lower leagues um I think the under 24 leagues a bit similar to our national league for them in Poland um but obviously after I’ve taken a lot of advice from other people who have been at them clubs and say they don’t pay and this and that so uh for me right now I don’t think it’s worth the risk of um potentially screwing my my English race into to try and rush out there
i like it Dan listen you know I like your attitude as Krabby said you know you’ve got a level head on you and never lose that that that’s a that’s an attribute that’s of benefit to you but listen Dan we appreciate you uh breaking into your your uh your your midweek to to talk to us on 360 Speedway you you are the first curtain rider apart from Mr lambert of course to uh to pop up on 360 output and we appreciate you taking time to talk to us Dan and listen just just keep doing what you do because you do it rather well and look forward to your company on Friday night weather permitting at Ashefield in Glasgow for Glasgow versus Mr lambert’s Skunthorp Scorpions and and good luck Dan when when the SGB2 series comes around we’ll we’ll all be rooting for you
