The Dartmoor Classic Sportive is an annual cycle ride, organised and run by Mid-Devon Cycling Club. Established in 2007, the Dartmoor Classic aims to bring a pro tour cycling experience to the amateur cycling community. The event is registered with British Cycling, the sport’s governing body and with a sell-out field of 4,000 riders is widely recognised as one of the most prestigious open-road Sportive’s in the UK, attracting cyclists from around the world!

There are four route options to choose from; the Piccolowhich is 45 miles, the e-piccolo Re-Volt at 45 miles, the Medio which is 66.6 miles or the Grande which is 107 miles.

Both the Medio and Grande routes include Gold, Silver & Bronze medal standards based on age and gender categories.

All routes include a Closed Road Hill Climb Competitionsegment with prizes.

The shorter Piccolo route is intended to be a less competitive and a less daunting option. Rider numbers are restricted to 500 and there are no medal times to worry about. Piccolo riders still enjoy the full Dartmoor Classic experience with everyone receiving a Finishers Medal.

My observations are the subject of this ride. So come along and enjoy another great cycling adventure.

[Music] oh looks like a serious crash here [Music] [Applause] hi guys welcome back and thanks again for joining me on my ride today so today is a Dartmore Classic Sportif here in the southwest um it’s a grueling sport um it goes up to about 107 miles I think it is with just shy of 10,000 ft of climbing today I’m going to be joining the medial group which is about I think the rout’s about 65 miles um I’m only doing about 50 miles of it so um as usual guys let’s go and see if we see anything interesting on today’s ride and hopefully we’ll see lots and lots of fellow cyclists yes I have done the Dartmore classic a number of times myself yeah I thought I’ll uh tag along with them today just really nice yeah this is a uh this is a great great sporty it really is really really well marshaled yeah there’s plenty of feed stations along the way for these cyclists um but for me to get go um and probably for a lot of people to get go you don’t stop i didn’t stop at I didn’t stop at all in the um stations i just rode through them there we’re just entering Bubby Tracy now i’ll take advantage of the marshalss why not bless them they’re all volunteers i’ve got nothing but great respect for them also new for this year guys um there is an ebike um event part of the Piccolo i think it’s 46 miles for the ebike event so that’s great that’s really going to encourage uh riders to get involved but I’ll tell you a little bit more about that and about the grand and the medial route later on when I have the information in front of me i can’t remember off the top of me head it’s Andy hello yeah so we’re uh going up on Dartmore now and we’ll be making our way up Hour the Dartmore Classic is Britain’s most inclusive sport chief this whole event is organized and run by Mid Devon Cycling Club MDCCC and I really hope they don’t mind me joining this event uninvited and unregistered i obviously won’t be using any of the feed stations but I will be taking advantage of the many marshals located on every single junction along the route yeah so we got plenty of cyclists on this hill i’m staying an equal mil guys to keep it a level playing field this table shows the medal times for the route you have chosen which includes gold silver and bronze medal standards for both age and gender categories [Applause] [Music] good job [Applause] last time I done the sport we didn’t come up a tour we did get to the top but we went on another road to get to the top so we still got 2 miles of this hill to go i’m probably about halfway through it now it’s very very humid today it really is you can feel the humidity although it’s very cloudy and uh and just as I started it did it did start to rain oh no you got to punch out the way for the ambulance first mechanical there I’ve seen yeah I can feel spits in the air now i did bring my rain jacket though yeah so this event runs over the weekend yesterday being Saturday it was the hottest day of the year on summer solstice so uh I really do feel for them guys yesterday today we got a bit of overcast but uh like I said the humidity is unbearable uh the rain’s coming down a little bit more you probably can’t see it on camera but it is a grizzling support vehicle that’s nice i fell out of body um 1.2 miles left of this hill dartmore looking wonderful one mile to go yeah yeah so I’m only doing 50 mi of this media route today um and it’s about five and it’s about 5,000 ft of climbing it averages here on Dartmore about 1,000 feet of climbing uh per per 10 miles so it is a bit of a slo especially when you’re doing the grand just shy of 10,000 ft on that one i remember it well yeah I’m chuffed a bit so that they do an ebike section now i think it’s 46 47 miles with about 4 and a half 5,000 ft of climbing but um yeah fantastic uh to give people a chance to uh participate in a in an event like this because it really is a great event yeah at least we can see how you tour today it’s not in thick cloud well done yeah I do like that green that they’re wearing you normally see lots and lots of people pushing their bikes up this hill but um on today’s ride up it I’ve only seen one yeah we got a bit of a headwind now we’re nearing the top of a tour but thankfully we have a south westerly wind so we’ll have a tailwind on the way back a tailwind hey mate
hey mate yeah once you stop on these hills it is hard to get going again [Music] heat up here [Applause] [Music] hold on guys [Music] i don’t know [Music] thank you well done all right the Dmore is looking beautiful look at all these fabulous riders [Music] oh it’s raining hard now guys typical Dartmore weather typical [Music] You’re here yeah it can be a bit of a nightmare for the motorists on these days with thousands of cyclists all on the same route still on the plus side the rest of the roads must be empty you see those clouds up there looming are they going to soak us dmore looking like his usual self gray and angry slow down we’ve got a bit of an event up here guys that’s the ambulance we saw earlier on thank you guys cheers oh looks like a serious crash here poor guy it happens though there’s quite a few there but I don’t know yeah unfortunately I uh I’ve seen that I’ve seen pretty serious accidents on all my um my sports that I’ve done so Oh the rain’s coming in again guys clear over there but well we got rain here thank you oh we’re going yeah that’s the way I’m going as well i did do the route right had to alter it for my uh what I was doing but um like I said I’ll take advantage of the marshals as well i won’t be using any of the food stations obviously in fact I don’t even think I’m going near a feed station cuz I’m not going to go in and around uh Prince Town where one of the feed stations is i’m just here today to uh document it the back of Thanks for the heads up guys that’s why you always listen to a Marshall this uh 4×4 with the trailers going to have fun and games going up the next hill there going to be a lot a lot of riders walking up it it’s extremely steep [Applause] so there’s uh still 4.4 miles of this hill left sorry mate so uh there he goes yeah it’s proper greasy now so we got 4.2 miles left of this hill see a lot of cyclists as expected walking he’s uh sorry he’s having difficulty now up people’s wheels have been spinning out this is just quite greasy now guys [Music] i’m only documenting it [Laughter] so we got four miles four miles of this hill left
it’s always a great event like
I’ve ridden it a few times
yeah it’s my first go for a few years but you sort of forgotten how brilliant how good it is with that with the numbers
there’s always someone there’s always a wheel to follow and Yeah
like a rabbit in the in the distance you can be chasing yeah the atmosphere is great isn’t it yeah shortly and then I think it’s up and down to the benefit as well okay so we still got 2.3 miles to go we got a rider down okay come on nice slippery cattle grid yeah so we still got 2.2 miles to go on this hill we’re getting there and so are they doing a brilliant job been on this uh climb for 21 minutes now yeah it’s a beautiful dog size of that one stopping for the Scooby snacks and a and a wee break by the looks of it not very inviting today maybe yesterday another um official photographer yeah maybe I should have uh made myself official for today’s ride rather than taking advantage of using the same roads and using their marshalss uh we got one mile left of this hill 27 minutes of climbing so far in the weather close looking really angry look at that guys mist and rain i might have to stop to put my jacket on in a minute [Applause] [Applause] my rain jacket on it’s getting too bad now it’s wet and windy no braking no braking and no steering on those cattle grids or those things are going to get interesting quite quickly 25% [Applause] nice weather for it [Applause] days like this you’re glad you got disc brakes what a day [Applause] thank you yeah it was a last minute decision for me to chuck my uh my raincoat in in the back pocket i’m so glad I did so so glad [Music] [Applause] oh my god it’s raining hard you know I don’t even think this was forecast well I never saw it forecast anyway [Music] [Applause] it’s so windy guys [Music] well at least it’s stopped raining it’s been terrible yeah we’re near in Prince Town now [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] yeah okay so I’ve missed out the Prince Town Loop uh because uh there’s a feed station up there for them and it’s basically it’s just a loop around look at that sky that’s bad is it yeah [Music] [Applause] [Music] sun’s trying to come out [Music] beautiful Dartmore [Music] welcome to Dartmore guys [Music] [Applause] [Music] oh wish it stopped raining [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] think [Applause] [Music] about [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Applause] Oh just stopped to get out of the rain it was absolutely hammering down guys put the bike in terrible now my god it’s a wet day yeah I’ve just stopped at post bridge um just to basically use the toilets and have a break really just get out of the rain it’s been lashing down as you can see right I’m going to have to hit the road cuz I’m getting too cold now stopped oh the bike’s doing well that’s it [Music] [Applause] thank you cheers this is where the career comes into its own on a homeward journey on these Dartmore hills [Applause] ah [Music] well I wasn’t meant to be going this way but just as well follow the crowd and I actually never been this way before it’s a new one for me nice diaper bless them and they think I’m participating well I am really I’m enjoying myself [Applause] cheers bro yeah so this is the uh this is the closed road section of this uh of this route nice isn’t it river’s clearing up a little bit now sun’s starting to come out and I think this is the uh start of the K or Q it is warming up a bit now the uh now the rain stopped it’s getting so cold is that chap there walking for mechanical there looks like he’s a get issues with his neck look at all these lovely riders look steep hill tell me about it we’re in Devon take it out go up on your right on your right [Applause] [Music] oh I just give you some information about the um about the Dartmore Classic the Grand Route is a distance of 107 mi with 9,100 ft of climbing maximum gradient of 20% we got the medial route which is a distance of 66 mi uh with elevation of 6,000 ft maximum gradient 20% we got the Piccolo and the E Piccolo which is the what’s it called the Revolt uh that’s 46 miles elevation is uh 3,646 ft of climbing and that’s got a maximum gradient of 15% great isn’t it this table shows the medal times for the route you have chosen which includes gold silver and bronze medal standards for both age and gender categories you
