at the beginning of June 2024 my girlfriend and I set off on a bike packing adventure we started in the southern Sweden in a town called Carl’s and boarded an overnight ferry to Lithuania we were excited 4 days of cycling awaited us in the western part of the country on the ferry we enjoyed a nice dinner and took in some extra calories for the days ahead we arrived early in the morning in Clipada Lithuania’s third largest city and the country’s only major seap port it’s also the busiest port in the entire Baltic region after unpacking our gear from the ferry cabin we hit the road our goal for the day to cycle northeast to a small village called Platei [Music] the weather was perfect sunny and calm and we cycled through the beautiful Lithuanian countryside some roads were paved others gravel or forest paths that were a bit tricky on our touring bikes a few hours in we reached Catinga one of Lithuania’s oldest towns with about 17,000 residents [Music] we had a quick lunch on a park bench just enjoying the peaceful surroundings [Music] we continued east riding past open fields and blooming wild flowers the warmth called for refreshment and we found it in the village of Cartenna our first Lithuanian beer of the trip [Music] after another couple of hours we arrived in Platelli a quiet town by lake also called Platei one of the largest lakes in Lithuania the population is only about thousand people and the town had a calm almost timeless feel our hotel for the night had a strong Soviet era vibe like it hadn’t changed in decades that evening we walked to a nearby restaurant and had a cold beetroot soup with a view of the lake it was simple and delicious [Music] our plan for day two was to head west from Platei to the Baltic Sea then ride south along the coast back to Pipa [Music] we cycled through peaceful farmland forests and small villages with classic churches at one point we stumbled upon a small market and stopped for a coffee break [Music] [Music] as we got closer to the coast things became more exciting we reached town Shwentoy a summer resort town full of guests restaurants and beachgoers [Music] then came the next town Palanga another popular seaside town known for its long sandy beach from Palanga it was only an easy 30 km ride back to Playa on a dedicated cycling path [Music] we arrived in the late afternoon checked into our accommenation and got some well earned rest [Music] this was the day we were most excited about cycling on the Coronian Spit it’s a 98 km long sand dune peninsula that separates the Coronian lagoon from the Baltic Sea a UNESCO World Heritage site shared by Lithuania and Russia we had a slow morning packed up and headed to the ferry terminal there is no bridge to the spit just a quick 5minute ferry ride it cost €1.5 per person and bikes go free [Applause] [Music] [Music] the Coronian Spit is a cyclist dream as of 2024 there’s a newly renovated 50 km bike path stretching from the north all the way to the town Nidita it winds through forest and sand dunes with no cars and no steep hills heat heat [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] although some parts of the Viking path were not yet Finished running away i’m running away from you we stopped in a village of Crayola for some lunch amazing smoked fish with cold local beer and I’m running away from you running away a short ride later we arrived in Nida the biggest town on the Coronian Spit it has nearly 2,300 residents but in summer it hosts hundreds of thousands of tourists dinner was at a pop-up pizza place great food
low prices and they even had left a blonde on the legit for a beer [Music] [Music] that evening we boarded a small boat just for passengers and bikes across to the mainland village of Pentina the boat ride took about an hour and cost €18 per person even though it was late we still had approximately 30 km to ride to Shilut our final destination recycled fast through beautiful wetlands and former pete mining areas pete lands cover nearly 10% of Lithuania and many are now being restored due to their environmental importance i’m climbing i’m searching i’m falling we arrived in Sholut just before dark it felt like stepping back in time many parts of the town still have a strong Soviet vibe and look see [Music] on our last day we had to cycle back to Clyada to catch our ferry boat back to Sweden [Music] we took a short morning ride around Shilut Town Center a surprising contrast from the night before the buildings were wellmaintained the streets neat [Music] but once we left the center the Soviet style blocks are back [Music] we started riding into the strong headman but soon found shelter in the forests and gravel trails [Music] the weather once again was perfect sunny not too hot and most importantly no rain we couldn’t have asked for better cycling weather [Music] oh speed camera you see back in Clipa we had one last stop at our favorite place Shuroui Brewery the second oldest in Lithuania with great beers and solid restaurant in total we biked 364 kilometers over 4 days we stayed in three different places all Airbnbs saw lakes nice beaches forests and sand dunes and enjoyed local food and beer along the way our favorite part was definitely the Coronian spit peaceful scenic and made for cycling it was a trip full of quiet roads friendly people tasty food and unforgettable landscapes we came home tired but very very happy [Music]
