This is a journey home through Aylesbury. It gives an idea of the things I have to look out for when cycling and there was plenty to be aware of.

hi everyone I thought it’d be interesting to show you all what it’s like for a cyclist cycling through Alsbury on a quite busy afternoon so this is uh a new Village called fairford Le which is uh on the southwest of Alsbury and there are quite a lot of Hazards on the way home so I think this was sort of the middle afternoon where there’s uh schools chucking out time but my first uh potential Hazard are these uh what appear to be tree surgeons or something um so I’ve got to be wary of these two and also the uh road on the left is a quite a dangerous Junction potentially people on the right there they’re all right so we’re now going to come up to one of these uh wooden bridges where the cycle way goes over it over this Brook so again potentially dangerous spot cuz there could be anyone crossing over it and there’s this woman just approaching so give her a bit of space another pedestrian up ahead but they’re walking away so they’re no problem this area is quite uh another potential Hazard a lot of cars around lot of people could pop out so going slow here and also there’s a road going across as you can see lots of cars going up the road there and it’s also a shopping area so and a dpd driver you know how notoriously bad they are driving so extra careful there um there’s a car park to the left and the exit is just up here where this red car pokes out another potentially dangerous spot Sometimes They Come shooting out of there which is why I took a wide line and now I’ve got a load of pedestrians to deal with and there’s a car approaching so I’ve slowed right down here to let them get ped F and finish where they’re going and now I’ve got to deal with all these pedestrians all over the place this bloke just stepped into the road without looking so danger everywhere and thankfully this underpass is uh is empty another potentially dangerous area lot of parked cars more people around so I giveway here just have a quick look left and right and straight across cuz there’s nothing nothing coming another potential Hazard here is this exit by the uh uh Pharmacy what’s that van doing he’s just parking there’s another car coming around so I’ve just got enough time to come out here another pedestrian stepping out he’s all right slow down just to let him go another hazardous area could be cars maneuvering out of their parking positions but there’s nothing nothing happening there we’re all right another busy Junction so a couple of vehicles up ahead not going to do anything here just follow this uh car in front and the van gestures here to move the vehicle on so I can just quickly go around and we come out onto another fairly busy Junction nothing coming but there’s a bus in the way now that car’s just gone whizzing past there but I’ve got to stop here so I get a good view up the road see where that car’s just gone up there on that right hand turn there could be cars coming out of there as well as cars coming down this road God’s sake which is why I’m saying what I said oh blind me they’re still coming maybe now okay a fairly decent pass by that car wasn’t too close I’ve had much closer down here believe me I’ve just got enough time to get through the roundabout before this car comes and turns in so no problems there now there’s a lot of school children around so Extra Care needed up here again so this is the Oxford Road and Alsbury I’m approaching here and there’s two schools up here Pebblebrook on the corner and so Henry Floyd further up cyclist on the right was taking a while to push off so I quickly whizzed up here on the cycle way this bit is usually quite clear but uh when you get further up the road that’s a Skool on the right there and there’s a bus stop at the top of the hill here where the Railway Bridge is and uh two people coming out of this estate to the left farm so I’m just slowing down here so I can nip around the side looks like somebody with a bike up ahead don’t know what they’re doing so we should be able to niit past just here and now we’ve got a group of people probably come from that bus that’s just uh pulled up there so I first got to deal with these two there’s another bus just pulled up oh man so I’m just going to wait until I get past the bus and then I can give the Bell a tinkle thank you and there’s a fair bit of space up here before we get to the Railway Bridge just warn these two thanks no problems there now I’ve got these further two down here the woman and the child so the lights have changed at the Crossing here which I’m going to use so this cyclist is going a bit slow so I’m just staying behind didn’t know if he was going to turn off right or go straight on so keep out of the way another potential Hazard here could be people around another one there’s an old woman here walking along so she’s all right she’s out of the way now we’re coming up to another potentially dangerous area there’s a lot of parked uh Vehicles up here which means I have to go into the oncoming Lane to get around them so I got to give myself a bit of space to avoid the old car door incidents and also the state of this road is pretty awful potholes so I’m extra wary coming up to a mini roundabout now by the supermarket so I’ve just waved this taxi on Just for convenience really I don’t want him breathing down my neck uh this group of people are all right another potential dangerous Junction down here is where people enter and exit the car park for the supermarket on the left there so I’m already out almost in the middle of this Lane to stop people cutting me up down here no one at the Crossing so that’s it basically a typical Asbury Day

  1. I'm impressed you know your way through Fairford Leys !! I need a Sat Nav to get to the Chippy and back. It's like a game of Tomb Raider in there 😂

  2. Hi Karl,Fairford leys reminds me of the fictional Toytown. Also ages ago I was told that the original Coldharbour Farm house still exists in the middle, and eventually I found it tucked away near your cycle route. You probably know that anyway.
In general I think cycling in Aylesbury is pretty horrible.

  3. What struck me about the first part of your ride was – although on cycle paths, there was not a tree of a bush in sight on what looked like a modern estate., a concrete and brick jungle.

  4. Morning Karl. Very sensible to avoid the gyratory- in fact going round and around that would be a video on its own. The guy pushing his bike along the Oxford Road had obviously taken the safest option!

  5. Done that route hundreds of times, I normally turn left at the mini roundabout before reaching the Oxford road then pick up the path past the college to the Bourg walk bridge. Biggest issue that time of day are all the school kids. Negotiating the gyratory during rush hour is also a little tricky/risky!

  6. Interesting video Karl and would be a great training video for cyclists to spot potential hazards, always thinking proactively and defensively (as an aside – the pinned comment made me laugh, sometimes no words are needed…).
For a few months we rented a flat in Oxford House – a pretty bland converted office building, at the junction of Fowler Road and Oxford Road. I often walked through Fairford Leys – it's an interesting development. While it does feel like they've crammed the houses/flats in, it certainly does have more interesting architecture than many blander new build estates. I certainly prefer it compared to Berryfields for example.
Since we moved out of Oxford House in 2023 it looks they've built a lot of houses over the car park.
I now live in Stoke Mandeville which is also gradually being surrounded/swallowed up by new build estates.

  7. that rothmans area, my friend was hit driving from Thame into town by a BMW that undercut all the traffic stopped at the lights there ( where you turned onto the cycle way)
my friend was taken to hospital but before that the offensive driver grabbed his keys and bag and ran away on impact. Probably worth taking his stash by taxi and making sure the drugs are out of his system before he plod caught up. I stopped cycling years ago though when an articulated sucked me and my bike in between two parked cars on Tring ROAD. Guess i was lucky it didnt go under the vehicle wheels.
