you bought your first road bike congratulations welcome to your midlife crisis welcome to the world of cycling there’s a lot to take in here what helmet should i get what tools are necessary perhaps the biggest question of all do i absolutely need to wear these i bought my first road bike less than two years ago this is my second bike i know i have a problem you’ll be here soon the point is i’m still new enough to remember how overwhelming everything felt and i don’t want you to feel overwhelmed i’m gonna break it down as best i can here are the things you need after buying a road bike nicely organized into three categories what you need on your body what you need on your bike and what you need in your garage or for the 13.7 percent of you in the uk your garage number one a helmet this tip seems like common sense please please please don’t ever ride without a helmet you could be the best cyclist in the world but look we share the road with all kinds of people and vehicles and the truth is you’ve got to be on defense if you’re worried about looking like a mushroom head i get it but fork out the extra money or more aesthetically pleasing helmet an expensive helmet is cheaper than a brain injury and speaking of mushroom heads make sure your helmet fits it shouldn’t be like this so cover your forehead make sure your strap is nice and snug and regularly check your helmet for cracks my helmet is the smith portal it’s been a good helmet but i’m going to let you in on a little secret you can’t hear this i ordered a new helmet the new cask proton icon i got it because this one’s old and i’m vain i like how the new one looks number two sunglasses the faster you get on your bike the more bugs you’re going to eat on your ride i know it’s gross the only thing worse than eating a bug is getting one in your eye so buy some sunglasses you don’t need fancy cycling sunglasses unless you really want them these simple plastic sunglasses from gooder i think they were like 20 bucks i’ll drop a link in the description i’m not sponsored by gooder or by any of the brands in this video i’ve paid for everything i recommend number three this is a big one do you need a full liker kit jersey bib shorts arrow socks leg warmers arm warmers the whole thing no you don’t but you do need padded shorts and this is why look you could get away with riding this is called the shammy by the way you could get away with riding a couple miles or a bunch of miles without padded shorts but as you get stronger and you ride further it’s gonna catch up to you so do yourself a favor save your butt get some padded shorts if you don’t want the lycra look that’s fine i get it get yourself some mountain bike shorts they look like regular shorts with the padding hidden inside a little insight though from someone who felt like you do now if you’re serious about road cycling you’re eventually going to learn about this thing called marginal gains then you’re going to want the lycra cycling bibs when you do get them don’t wear underwear with the bibs i know it seems gross but it’s not just treat them like underwear wash them after every use speaking from experience don’t buy cheap cycling bibs off amazon they fall apart faster than they should if you’re on a budget go to blackbibs.com that’s where i got these if you’re vain like me and you want to go premium rapha makes some good bibs and they have been a noticeable upgrade their chamois works really well for my butt okay one more item for things on your body bone conduction headphones these are a bonus item they are not a requirement i like to ride solo i like to listen to podcasts i like to listen to lo-fi hip-hop don’t judge me while i’m writing if you’re the same invest in some bone conduction headphones don’t buy earbuds you’re going to live in constant fear of them falling out while you’re descending after a sweaty climb these are the shocks open run pro and they’re solid we’re on the things you need on your bike number one water bottles get as many water bottles as will fit on your bike you’re gonna use them a general rule is to drink one bottle of water for every hour you ride so you might not need all of your water bottles on every ride but as you begin to go further and longer you’ll be happy you had them these are from a new company here in la called lead out los angeles i saw an ad on instagram i like the way they look and i got them next up saddlebag with inner tube and tools even if you’re running tubeless tires like me you should carry a spare tube and tools i’ve been pretty lucky i’ve had to use mine in 8 000 miles and those have been 8 000 miles in la which is pretty much a miracle if you’ve seen the roads here but i have run into other cyclists who needed a tube and it’s nice to have one on hand to share and who knows when my luck is going to run out because it will happen someday it’s inevitable my saddle bag is from oral case inside is a regular butyl tube multi tool a co2 canister and some tire levers levers levers levers 13.7 percent of you understood that i’ve gotta put this back in that is one thing that’s kind of a pain before i do that though bonus item tail light everybody should have a tail light whether you’re writing exclusively in the day or if you’re writing day and night doesn’t matter get a tail light if you want to be super fancy you can be like me and upgrade to this garmin varia it has a radar built in it gives you a heads up when a car is coming not necessary but it’s nice it’s a luxury but a really nice luxury and a safe luxury so it’s easier to sell to your wife first thing you should get for your bike garage is chain lube there’s a deep rabbit hole of marginal gains when it comes to cleaning and lubing and maintaining your drive chain believe me i’m in that red hole right now but you don’t need to worry about that yet let me just give you the same advice the guy at the bike shop gave me on the day i bought my first road bike once a week wipe down your chain with a microfiber cloth then put some lube on it apply one drop at a time on the links inside of the chain spin your crank a couple of times you’re good to go i currently use the muck off dry lube which is good for dry climates like la if you’re in a wet weather climate you want to look for wet loop there’s a lot more to it but that’s a good first step into the world of bike maintenance which by the way the next thing you need number two one of these bike pump uh your tires are gonna lose pressure eventually so this is from topeak the joe blow i don’t know it’s a weird name uh get a tire pump after you have a pump the next thing you should get in my opinion is a torque wrench all over your bike you’ll see these numbers next to all the bolts those are torque ratings you do not want to over torque your bolts it can be a very expensive mistake you can pick up a simple handheld torque wrench like this one it works perfectly fine for most of the adjustments you’re gonna make if like me you dive deeper into the bike maintenance rabbit hole you can pick up a proper torque wrench set but again this thing plus some quality hex wrenches it’s probably going to be more than you ever need in fact this next thing i would buy before buying the expensive torque wrench set might be controversial but it’s been here the whole time a work stand a stand like this one from park tool while expensive makes cleaning and maintaining your bike so much easier it’s almost as good as taking your bike for a ride which by the way it’s the weekend and it’s time for my ride i hope this has been helpful you

This is really good
Best padded shorts?
Sunglasses….protects the only two things on your body that will help you navigate the rest of your life from stones or bits of metal or literally anything that gets flicked up from other cyclists, ALL the other motor vehicles. It's not about bugs and inconveniences…it's about protecting your eyes from serious damage …and also damage from the sun. But yes…also bugs. The bigger the glasses, the less chance anythings going to get into your eyes.
I love this Guy, so real ,informative and funny, I wanted on electric bike but this still was so helpful a d relevant 😅
No padded shorts. Just buy a brooks saddle😊
I’m here… mid life crisis
Yeah man I’m a runner Ive never cycled. while camping in whales I was talked into a bike ride with some guys I met in a pub so i hired a bike and off we went 70 miles & 4000 ft of elevation the £40 shorts definitely helped although it still hurt.
& now I own a bike 😂
Personally, I've felt no difference riding with padded shorts or without.
Found you. Really we need to send a petition to YouTube requesting a 'cycling' section. Thanks for the videos, I know how hard it is to make them interesting enough for success. Finally, is it MAGA or MEBA? MEBA- Make Earth Beautiful Again, ban lycra. 😊. All the best, eGaz
I'll pass on the diapers. I guess I'm immune to brainwashing. I enjoy riding 35 mile gravel rides. Maybe that's not long enough distance. No issues whatsoever with regular athletic briefs and riding shorts. I have no idea why everyone is wearing diapers and smearing cream all over their rumps and trying to get me to join them. Not gonna happen 😂
Don't wear anything that obstructs your hearing. The Varia radar taillight is like the best thing ever!
Just cycled for an hour to and from Bible study with my work boots on a mountain bike my friend leant me for a while and my legs are lead baloons, and I swear if I get off the seat it’s like a blood rush to the beanbag. So definitely looking at wanting to get padded shorts. Even though it’s a sort of a padded seat compared to race bikes etc it’s never comfy.
aaaaaaannnnnnd saved im gonna need this video for sure lol
why need comfy shorts? no understand like why dont they just make comfier saddles?
Thanks for the pointers . Gonna start cycling in the next few days, getting my bicycle put together tomorrow and ordering my helmet along with some basic stuff I might need. Glad I came across your video
podcasts and low-fi hip hop LMAO trust me i am judging
Why not just buy a better seat? I just bought a Norco Mountain bike and won't be cycling great distances.
what camera is this?
Padded shorts: Completely disagree.
Padded shorts are a scam, but road cyclists have been socially conditioned to believe they're essential. The bike racing industry is partially responsible for this scam.
And I suggest readers don't unquestioningly believe me – take your padded shorts apart and actually look at the thin padding inside these overpriced sweaty garments. Also, once you have the actual padding in your hands, squeeze it between your fingers, and then you'll have actual proof of how useless they are for padding.
Here's what I discovered about the bike industry and the products they push.
I'm in my early 60s, 6", 84kg, I do long distance XC for fitness and enjoyment. My current route is 42km = 3hr ride. My rig is an old 26" 3×9 HT. The route is a repurposed traintrack, thus decent speeds over minimal roughness and gradients; I spend most of my time in the saddle.
I've clocked about 1500km on this route (I started off at 18km, then increased to 28, been doing 42km for about a year, was about to begin doing 52km, but got side-swiped my a large wombat and suffered a broken collarbone),
and I've never worn padded shorts, and I suffer no soreness of bum or lower back, and no chaffing or friction issues.
Why, because I use a saddle that has actual padding, compared to the bike industry who continues to push thinner and lighter saddles, which imo, is driven by the racing industry….lighter = faster.
I run a 190mm wide body Gel rubber saddle (note Memory Foam is useless for padding, it has to be Gel rubber), it's only 300g heavier than the useless thin saddles new bikes are shod with. I wear robust work wear cargos, cut down into shorts, and I also wear tight fitting stretchy boxers, and I rub a tiny bit of common hand lotion onto specific areas when the weather is warmer, as I tend to do predawn rides and arrive back at my car by dawn, or I do winter riding, thus sweating's effectively dealt with.
The only riding clothes I have, as riding clothes are overpriced, are my full finger gloves. All my other clothes are normal clothing, the shorts already mentioned, and the t-shirt is a sports one designed for exercise, but more than half the cost of "specialised" bike clothing.
Also, those Lycra bike shorts are sweat machines and are way longer than required. IMO, they're the dumbest piece of clothing one can wear when riding.
Learned quickly to breathe in/out of your nose, not my mouth and keep it shut lol. I remembered swallowing a few chunky bugs while biking and coughing or gagging forcing myself to swallow it lol
In a paper sack, in the order you put them on for a bike ride. Bibs, shorts or tights, depending on the weather, jersey, long or short sleeve, socks and clipless shoes- Time ATAC cleats and pedals. MIPS helmet.
i hate admitting this but like im fat and cant find bib shorts my size yet lol biggest i found were size 40 and im still well above that well a size 47 waist xD but yeah im having a harder and harder time justifying 200$ padded shorts cause honestly… ive been using a really soft face towel like the medium sized towel? and idk…. im kinda like at this point 5$ towel? 200$ bib shorts? 5$ towel? 200$ bib shorts… ill get a pair eventually i think but damn i got through my first 30 mile ride just fine with a towel underwear and sweatpants

I laughed so hard at that Welcome to your Midlife crisis bit more than I should 😂
Why I'm getting personal attacked as soon as the video starts? smh
Thank you Mitch!
If you’re on the lazy side, buy a folding bike and just use it. When it gets dirty or you get too tired on your way or you have any mechanical issue, just put it on a trunk (even an Uber trunk) and take to maintenance.
Bone conduction phones is good advice!
I came for the beginner cycling advice, but I stayed for the of British pronunciations. It's all appreciated 🥹
