Welcome to another episode of my cycling journey journal. Today, I’m taking you with me on a route through northern France – from Reumont, through Cambrai, all the way to Arras. We’ll meet people who help selflessly, experience small adventures… and discover some fascinating facts.
Let’s get started! After a long day of cycling, I arrived in Reumont – a small, quiet village in the Hauts-de-France region. It was supposed to be just a short stop… but as often happens on a journey – fate had other plans. In the last two kilometers, I got a flat rear tire. Luckily, I met amazing people. The garden host, Marcel-André, didn’t hesitate to help. Together, we changed the tube, and he lent me a proper pump – much better than the one I had. On these hot days, I also received something priceless – cold water, a deck chair, a table, an extension cord with electricity. I had a moment to work on my laptop in the shade of the trees. Peace, silence, greenery – everything I needed at that moment. At the end of my stay, I signed the guestbook… and as a farewell, I received a handmade decoration – shaped like the local tree with the village’s name. A beautiful gesture that will stay with me for a long time. Reumont has medieval roots. In the 17th century, the area witnessed Franco-Spanish wars. Today – it’s a peaceful oasis, perfect for any cyclist. From Reumont, I moved on to Cambrai. There awaited Decathlon – my technical support. I replenished my stock of inner tubes for the bike and trailer… …and also bought new brake pads – because in these hills, with a loaded trailer, they wear out surprisingly fast. I also stopped by Lidl – did some shopping: food, water, a few little things. A moment to recover… and I could continue – this time to Arras. Cambrai is a city with history. It’s famous for delicate lace and mint candies – “bêtises de Cambrai. And during WWI – it was the site of one of the first major battles involving tanks. I arrived in Arras with new energy and a new supply of gear. The garden host was Vincent – together with his wife and three children. Before arriving, I decided to surprise the kids – I bought markers, crayons, chalk, and a coloring book. Their joy was immense – sometimes the smallest things bring the greatest happiness. Vincent and his family welcomed me warmly. Despite the language barrier, we understood each other perfectly – because kindness needs no words. Arras is one of the most beautiful cities in northern France. Known for its baroque squares and underground tunnels – boves – used by soldiers in WWI. A city with soul and great history. That was one of those days that stays in memory for a long time. Small problems… big gestures… kindness that knows no borders. That’s exactly why I travel by bike. It’s not just about getting from point A to B. It’s about people, places, memories. Thank you for being with me today.
