Race day highlights from the 2025 Cardiff 70.3 Triathlon – and what a day it was! In this vlog, I take you behind the scenes of one of my favourite triathlons, from transition setup to crossing the finish line with a new personal best of 05:41:02 ⏱️ – my first ever sub-6!

🎥 Watch the action:
🏊‍♂️ Swim start nerves
🚴‍♂️ Fastest ever 90km bike split
🏃‍♂️ Tough, humid run conditions
🎉 Finish line moment + reaction

Cardiff 70.3, hosted by Always Aim High Events, is always a special race – especially racing in my hometown. I’m training for my biggest challenge yet: the DECA Triathlon (10 IRONMANs in 10 days) and this race was a key step along the way.

hello everybody welcome to Recover Lock TV my name is Chris i’m your coach sports and we are officially at the Cardiff triathlon um I’m lucky enough to be doing the legend distance which is a 70.3 and um yeah little just after 5 in the morning race starts at 6 and um kind of getting all my stuff into transition super chill morning at the moment a lot of fast people a lot of fast bikes by the looks of it then there’s me so uh yeah typically like an absolute rookie um cuz uh I was busy yesterday running around friend’s birthday trying to micromanage everything um I decided well I forgot to put my watch on charge my Garmin last night so I put it on charge this morning just to get an extra little bit of battery life in it and then stupidly I seem to have left it in my kitchen so luckily I’ve got the Garmin for the bike but uh unfortunately I don’t have my watch so it’s going to make pacing on the run a little bit interesting almost and uh yeah but hey hope you enjoyed the video if you can please like and subscribe and I shall see you again soon take care got a little [Music] a [Music] A little [Music] a Come [Music] [Applause] on Maddie come on Chris 214 [Music] [Applause] [Applause] [Music] united States from recovery lab UK hello everyone hope you’ve enjoyed the the video so far i have literally just finished car triathlon i have my nice little what cup holder cup mat tea mat little slate uh whatever the you may call this um I have one and um yeah so um that was tough incredibly tough i think um I had 541 however I will double check and let you know um and so on so forth like an absolute rookie I uh forgot my Garmin but uh my partner came and saved the day and dropped it off to me um so I was able to have that on the second lap of the run and um yeah it made my life easier because uh to be honest I was completely unaware of pacing and and so on so forth uh you know so um it it certainly made life easier as um I was kind of running around um but yeah certainly my fastest ever 70.3 my fastest ever bike ride uh split as well like you know for for 90k distance i came off in uh 241 uh which uh was freaking awesome to be honest um but it was a totally different day than I thought it would be to be honest we were due uh a lot of um heat a lot of uh sunshine and so on and so forth and it was totally opposite we had a hell of a lot of wind um we had a hell of a lot of humidity we had some rain intervals as well like you know which uh completely uh were welcome to be honest cuz it was absolutely boiling uh like the humidity was royally kicking my ass um maybe two or three points um and then the headwinds on the run as well as the bike the bike was savage um really surprised me uh how tough that was and then I’ll talk about a lot of um kind of the technicality of the course uh here at Cardiff uh but when I’ll do that I’ll do that another time uh when I’ve kind of had a shower had a change and then I can kind of sit with you and uh really talk about it so that way if you do fancy giving Cardiff a go it’s a great race um but there’s a few things that I think that would really help you um kind of leaning into that if you wanted to give Cardiff Tathon a go um but yeah overall really really tough day out like really surprised me on how tough I actually found it especially towards the end i was dying you know and um struggling to hold on to the pace because I was just overheating and yet it was super windy and raining you know um but that that humidity was really get to me uh a lot of people kind of totally fully unzipped you know and uh had to chest out both men and women you know uh women obviously covered up with their sports bars but men um chest outs and stuff like that um but um yeah it was it was tough super tough but uh overall super happy beyond happy uh with my performance um the swim uh like the theme of the day super tough um it was incredibly choppy going outwards um and also uh incredibly physical you know um much more physical than uh Bolton uh a couple weeks back you know um managed to get luckily um kicked in the face by someone’s calf muscle and not their heel i was so grateful it was their calf and not their heel um because I’ve taken a heel to the head before and it is not good uh but luckily uh it was car and it was just I don’t know what this person was thinking or doing but they just took a right turn and just started swimming um and just completely cut across me um and then one of the kayakers had to get them stopped them uh and because I was breathing this side I could see it all um and then they put their head down carried on swimming and then they did it again and kept going completely off the course um so it was a bit nuts and um it was a bit all over the shop like on the after the turnound point and coming back in people were just all over the place like you know so um sighting is a must guys um practice practice practice if you always uh you’re always welcome to uh join me on a Sunday you know uh same with the recovery guys always welcome on a Sunday I swim down Whitmore Bay um don’t charge for that it’s just purely and simply um want to kind of help more and more people you know so um if you want to come down um it’s always on our Straa group uh just little join that group and then click that you’re coming so I know how many people are coming and so on so forth um not everybody does it but it is really helpful to to do it um so I do know um and then that way if we can get in the habit of it then um we can utilize Travis’s page as as best as we possibly can um but fueling on the bike went really well and um that was um really well i managed to take on 100 g uh of carbs uh every hour you know finished that um flow gel bottle um and so on but I’ve got to get used to it a lot more I think because not that I’ve got any stomach issues but um I have an awareness if you will so I to me that just says that I’m not there yet in regards to taking on that quantity but normally I tend to have 75 so that extraund what that extra 75 if you will um made a huge difference but also like uh has made it feel a little bit uncomfortable and I think the humidity uh could have done with a little bit extra electrolytes on the run if you will i’m always apprehensive of using other brands now because um some brands give me bad stomachs so I I drank a lot of water on uh the run um but what I’ll do is have a proper sit down with you guys and break it all down to kind of show you and I’ll get the maps up and I’ll I’ll tell you what’s what okay um if you haven’t already please subscribe uh means the world to me and um have a great day enjoy the rest of the video and I’ll see you soon okay take care
