Cycling UK is aiming to equip all police forces across the UK with a revolutionary virtual reality educational film that will for the first time allow drivers to experience what’s it like to be ‘close passed’ by a vehicle.

The film will be premiered at the Cycle Show in Birmingham and an appeal launched to raise money to provide specialist VR headsets and educational materials for police forces.

It forms the second stage of the national cycling charity’s Too Close for Comfort campaign which last year provided forces across the country with ‘close pass’ mats to educate drivers on safe passing distances.

i’ve spotted the cyclist nice and early cuz I’m paying attention and I’m aware of hazards and vulnerable road users now the cyclist is clearly going to move out to pass this parked car and probably leave enough space in case the car door swings open i need to give the cyclist at least 1.5 m to overtake that’s about the width of a parked car i’m checking the road to make sure it’s safe otherwise I sit well back behind a cyclist until it is safe to overtake i’ve spotted the parked car and I’ve started to move out early it’ll allow me to see the oncoming traffic better and for vehicles behind to see me that was a nice safe pass thank you most of us cycle and drive at some point in our lives our friends family and children too if you leave at least 1.5 m when passing cyclists or even more when traveling over 30 mph the roads would be a safer place for everyone thank you and remember don’t pass too close for comfort
