Join me on my journey as I cycle down the 127 mile length of the Leeds Liverpool Canal, the UK’s longest canal, in a single day on a fat bike. The ride took over 10 hours in the saddle and almost 4 hours worth of breaks.

Check out my other videos for further details on kit, the bike set up I’ve used and some general hints and tips.

For this ride I had ideal conditions, could have easily used a gravel bike, but if you need to watch a great video of how different the tow path can be after a spell of wet weather, be sure to check out Solo Biker Dave’s bikepacking video where he encounters some brutal conditions along the same route with a fully laden bike! 👇🏼

morning it’s now 5:45 a.m friday the 13th of June 2025 today’s the big day i’m just at station waiting to get the train to Sand Hills this is stage one of the journey yeah so looks good for the weather uh as you can see there’s not uh any rain forecast really in the areas that I’m going the wind conditions look perfect uh couldn’t have asked for a better day really so let’s get on this train and let’s get ourselves to Liverpool [Music] [Music] so yeah I’m at the start of the Le Liverpool Canal on a Stanley long flight so as you can see behind me that is the tobacco warehouse biggest brickuilt building in the world on that side you will just about see poking up the top the Titanic Hotel and I’m headed up that rock flight towards the first stop which is going to be Wigan that’s about 35 miles away so I’ll see you in a bit [Music] [Music] [Music] now traditionally the start of the leop canal is down that way which is the Aldonian village so I started not at the traditional route started at Stanley Lock flight anyway we’ve just climbed up let’s get going nice tailwind to start us off [Music] oh hey hey [Music] [Music] heat heat that’s right heat heat [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] ah [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] It’s the uh second motorway of the day the M58 [Music] so yeah sit rep and 12 miles in so 10% of the way into the ride and uh yeah I don’t feel too bad but I can certainly do with a coffee just pass over this bridge yeah and uh I’ve had a couple of little mental wobbles as in like can I do this uh yeah the legs are a little bit sort of taking a bit of a time to wake up but just keep going i’ve got 13.6 6 miles an hour average speed so I’m not doing too bad so we’ll blow on meet the third of Norasking see you in a bit [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] just up to the Roughford brunch so you got a sign there leads 102 and a half local 24 wigan 10 and 1 half hours 10 and 1 half hours to get some food on we go [Music] there’s Mickey [Music] heat heat [Music] yeah I remember it yeah fourth motorway of the day [Music] third motor way of the day m6 wind’s been a bit of a challenge we fly on absolutely [Music] that’s a shame statue’s gone must have got vandalized [Music] such a shame that the vandalism [Music] Heat heat [Music] [Music] it’s a bit of a sit rep so 35 miles in a few after a cafe stop uh so father-in-law sorted me out there he’s gone back home now see we get the train back to Form and uh yeah just getting off the Wigan Flight so down there is the Lee branch there’s the river that takes you off towards the Bridgewater Canal of Manchester we’re heading that direction [Music] yeah those gates are a bit of a pain especially when your bike is like 15 kilos so it got to help you if you got a uh a fully loaded bike packing bike with all your tents and equipment if you got a bike like this and you’re bike packing absolutely no chance you have to lift it over so yeah I just reached the top of the Wig and Lock Flight so I’m just outside the uh the Boers facilities here used to be called Wigan Top Lock Services but the Canal River Trust changed it so that’s uh you wouldn’t believe this is Wigan would you nice and calm as you can see from the ripples in the water that looks like a tailwind i’m going that way [Music] [Applause] heat heat [Music] heat heat [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] heat heat [Music] yeah stop for a minute or so just to give you a bit of a sit left so 43 and a half miles in so uh yeah more than a third of the way into the ride now i’m taking my own advice with regards to nutrition and hydration management the first breakup plan was spot on i’m ahead of schedule um I’ve just stopped at this sign here which says “Welcome to Lanasher.” To be honest I’m sure I’m already in Lanasher but clearly the sign knows better than me so what I’m going to do is I’m going to have to plan a bit of a bathroom stop so there’s a pub about 3 and a half miles away so I’m going to stop there i’m going to quickly use the bathroom obviously I’ll have to oblige and buy a pint as well not a pint half pint h I don’t want to get too bogged down and have to keep stopping all the time but yeah I’ll get to the pub and I’ll do a quick check in with you there this is Botney Bay it’s the boatyard it’s where a lot of people buy their boats from or buy them and then get them delivered to there to launch them from and this is the uh the old mill which is now a business park once was once a shopping center and all these warehouses down here that’s all new i don’t remember that being there we crack on less than a mile to go now and then we get me bathroom break oops morning thank you [Music] got a cute little glass with a handle so yeah that was the right decision to stop then um so I’m 47 miles in and I’ve got about another 30 to go to get to Burnley so I will need to push on for the next couple of hours for this one so yeah I’m still relatively ahead of schedule um but obviously that’s brought me back quite a bit that uh but was much needed so yeah I’ll um get this beer on me for a little bit of hydration and we’ll get cracking along the rest of the toe path see you in a bit [Music] heat heat [Music] heat hey heat hey heat heat heat [Music] [Applause] [Music] it’s entering Blackbird now 54 miles done [Music] i don’t cross the road again [Music] i know how you feel mate yeah [Music] oh yeah windy it’s pretty busy [Music] [Applause] [Music] pain that was some people I was having a drink at lunch time [Music] [Applause] [Music] is that jet ski i’ve seen it on uh solo biker Dave’s video that’s still there over a year later label [Music] [Music] yeah it’s a bit of a sit rep so um 60 mi in legs feel okay i’ve stayed hydrated so far but it’s quite warm just uh three miles from the halfway point i just met a charming work there who’s uh mid70s riding a lapier ebike in a pair of sandals here Austin i’m still riding in the 70s and he likes to get me out there and I’m above Jordan [Music] [Music] going to be pretty close off in the winter [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] so yeah I just stopped for a couple of minutes at the halfway point so Liverpool 63 and 5/8 of a mile behind me and Leads 63 and 5/8 of a mile in front of me so yeah last say five miles or so has been a bit attritional to be honest um I’m starting to get that niggle in my foot that I’ve had since about last Sunday when I did last Sunday’s ride i think it’s just a a blister which I keep aggravating um but yeah it’s resonating through my foot so got ibuprofen with me so I’ll take some of those and yeah I’ve uh done 5 hours 15 minutes of riding so far and uh average speed 12.3 which is not bad at all so I think I’ve got another hour’s push towards Burnley that’s about 70 miles um I’m going to get some lunch there because I’m pretty hungry and I’ve only had really gels so I’ll push on there i’ll top my waters up uh top my electrolytes up and then yeah push on towards uh Guy Grave and Skipton and the Yorkshire Dales from there so I’ll catch you in a bit [Music] turn [Music] that on the B and Magwoods going through Burnley now but I realize I’ve left myself massively behind so according to my my clock about 45 minutes behind schedule so that means they stop and skip probably won’t happen so yeah let’s see how we get on e push hard on the pedals a little bit I think so I’ll catch up with you in a bit [Music] good night [Music] feeling [Music] a little bit better just gone over the fire ridge somewhere i’m now the other side of Far Ridge heading toward Farme so yeah I’m not not feeling too bad but I bloody mess around at stops at bathroom stops where I got a paint and I got a hard paint um also lunch stop was like 50 minutes so unfortunately I’ve left myself very little stoppage time in uh other place like Skippton for example where I wanted to stop but I might have enough time to fill the water well up like a can of Coke or something yeah just keep plowing on to uh needs the finish line [Music] get off and walk this i think Heat heat [Music] heat heat [Music] heat heat n [Music] heat heat [Music] [Music] heat heat [Music] so stop for a couple of minutes just to uh lay up this bridge i say a couple minutes it’ll be about half a minute what a work of engineering [Music] so 38 and a4 miles to leads pleased with that so onwards had an absolute nightmare here so Canal River Trust has closed the toe the toe path off a place called Bank Newton locks and I’ve had to use the road which has added considerably longer to my time [Music] i was pass through guard grade there and I’m running low on water only got my bottle left i got about four quart so I’ll stop in skits to get some water heat heat [Music] [Music] [Music] heat heat [Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] so just gone through Silsen Uh I think I’m going to resign myself to the fact that I’m not getting this train so I just want to get the ride done what I’ll do is I’ll pull over in a sec i think there’s a bench we’ll get the ticket sorted for the next thing yeah just coming to By now feeling all right but contact points those are what are struggling at the moment so we’ll have to push on as best I can see you in a bit [Music] heat [Music] heat [Music] heat heat [Music] [Music] heat heat [Music] [Music]

  1. Well done John , you certainly had lovely weather for it. I can still remember most of the route but it was much more moist when we did it last year. And the jet ski is still there too 😂 atb Dave 🚲🍺👍
