Now to the story of a cyclist from Minnesota who found himself inside abroad this week when Israel’s bombing campaign kicked off. Ian Anderson was on a worldwide cycle trip, a journey that quickly turned into an escape mission as that fighting began. His cycling trip started in February on the coast of Portugal. His goal 10,000 miles to Japan. To do that, he had to cross Iran. At first, he says the kindness of locals eased his worries. There’s like a culture of generosity, surprised daily by like how many offers we that we had for, for like joining them for tea, like they’re trying to offer us food or they’re trying to not let us pay for, for the meal that we just ate at the restaurant. But on June 13th, everything changed. Israeli bombs began striking Iranian military sites, forcing Ian to shelter in place for two days just north of Tehran. He says that revealing he was American made tensions even worse. I could read that there was like a lot of tension on their faces. When the US State Department sent evacuation guidance, Ian took an eight hour ride around the Cap CNC after he got his guide warned he could no longer guarantee his safety. Ian made it out safely and says he owes his life to that guide.
