My first restoration project! Really happy with the progress on this ‘70’s Sprite.
A guy gave it to me for $25. A good challenge to not break things while trying to remove them.
Keeping things original as much as I can. The bb lock cup was crazy stuck. A triumph there.
Old grease is one of my favorite smells in the world. (Last image for smell-o-vision.) Reminds me of my grandpa’s garage. Not just “old” smelling because it’s old, but the formulas used back then made the smells. I have been known to smell the handlebar ends while taking breaks…
New bearings in the front hub, headset, and bottom bracket feels great. I’m very surprised.
I’d need a special tool for the cassette (freewheel?). It feels surprisingly good so I kind of don’t want to poke around. I’m torn because it’s satisfying to check every little piece. I’m sure that will get the best of me and I’ll get the tool to at least clean up in there and see how it works. Eventually.
Some of you may remember my trials with the cotter pins. Ho-lee. New cotter pins are coming in the mail! (Not yet installed in the pics.)
Yes, Sheldon Brown now has all my respect.
And on my next project I need to slow down and take better “before” photos.
I’ll get some good finished photos once I’m done to show you all.
What do you think?
