the price of stuff is going up and up food fuel phones and also bikes so when Canyon told us about this their new bike we got really excited in this video I’m going to tell you why 2025 inflation is still a big problem and the cost of energy and raw materials is seeing prices skyrocket but cycling has an added issue premiumization didn’t think that was a word well it wasn’t until recently we’ll dive into it later on the fact is now though that cycling appears to be more expensive relative to average income than at any point in the last 150 years in fact here’s a graph we just made up average wages versus the price of fancy bikes wages have roughly doubled in many countries over the last 25 years meanwhile prices of a lot of top- end bikes has in some cases quadrupled now of course this is a gross generalization and there are many exceptions but the point stands and entry-level prices as well for many people cycling is simply too expensive and also of concern though is that for people getting into the sport it creates a massive barrier which is why when we heard about this bike we got so excited the Canyon Endure Race Allroad it is not cheap but at €999 I can’t think of another bike at this price with this specification and best of all it doubles up as both road bike and gravel bike yes other major brands have similarly priced bikes but they all seem to be giving up at least a couple of features compared to this one i mean we’ve got a full Shimano Q’s group set here which is a banger it’s got a double chain ring up front 10 gears at the back it’s got shifting technology it was being used to win the tour to France not all that long ago not by my standards anyway but the best bit by my reckoning is the hydraulic disc brakes now normally at this price point you’d see cable actuated discs which give you some but not all of the benefits of disc brakes and a fair few drawbacks as well these though brilliant now I’m not suggesting that you buy a bike based on the brakes the rest of it has to back it up too here we’ve got an alloy frame carbon forks tubeless ready wheels comfy 35 mm wide tires that are neither full road tires nor super grippy gravel tires but they do a solid job on both to anyone frankly who’s not jumping off an out andout road racing bike this is going to feel zippy yep you heard zippy [Music] importantly too it has the ability to fit mud guards and also pania rack so ideal for all weather riders commuters and cycle tours as well and the geometry of the bike is designed to be a little bit more comfortable for the road or for gravel so welcoming for newer riders great for casual riders but with a quick swap of the stem and it’ll even fit a racing snake such as myself and actually that is one of the things I also really love about this bike is it’s so attractively upgradable stick an affordable set of carbon wheels on here you can go road racing stick a set of 40 mil gravel tires on here you can go gravel racing heck you can even race cycross [Music] i’m probably getting a bit carried away with myself here racing is definitely not for everyone nor is it what this bike has been designed for but you could race on it and that is great now you might be wondering quite why I am as excited about this bike as I was about Matthew Vanderpool winning Milan San Ramo or the latest series of Love Island but it’s for one good reason and that is that I’m worried i’m worried that cycling is sleepwalking into a problem cuz here’s the thing premiumization that word again bikes and equipment has evolved considerably in recent years but that has come at a cost electronic group sets disc brakes 700 g carbon frames with integrated cables i mean bikes are now faster and nicer to ride than ever but the tech we want comes at a cost it’s more expensive to make and it’s more expensive to buy and as a cycling nerd and expro racer I am guiltier than most for infusing about the latest tech because I love it ever faster radder bikes are just addictive and I sympathize with any of you out there who are similarly afflicted but and it’s a big butt in this drive for ever better bikes are we in danger of leaving people behind part of the problem too is that in cycling we’re seeing that the strongest sector of the market is the premium one so there is much less incentive for brands to invest time and money into more affordable bikes and equipment because it’s simply less likely to sell for people already into the sport there is an issue of feeling marginalized but from an equipment perspective it’s not actually a problem because we’ve got bikes and kit that we can keep riding and keep loving and ultimately keep on the road cuz whilst disc brakes might have taken over rim brakes are still good and you can still go for a brilliant enjoyable road ride on a 25 mm tire but what’s the bike that’s going to hook people what’s going to get people into the sport the bike that people can buy and ride and do everything on and ultimately upgrade the bikes that 20somes can buy when they’ve got their first job or teenagers can buy so that they can start to race i mean yes you can buy secondhand and I’m a huge advocate of that but it’s harder for inexperienced people to navigate that market and yes more affordable bikes already exist but they have to cut so many corners that I think what you miss is that feeling of jumping on a fast light responsive bike that’s where the addiction really starts so that’s why I’m excited i feel like this is a major brand putting a big line in the sand and saying “Yes we recognize there’s a problem and we’re going to try and do something about it.” Now it’s true GCN has been partners now with Canyon for 10 years so make of that what you will in this context but also I’ve been incredibly lucky to have been able to ride all of their top end drop deadad gorgeous bikes for that time too and I’m absolutely not going to stop i mean there is a difference between them and this i’m not going to lie but this bike makes me happy it’s versatile and robust i mean those Shimano Q’s gears they’re marketed on their durability and ease of repair but the best thing about it is that it’s a whole lot of fun to ride in so many different ways go for a long bike ride go bike packing go smash a couple of PBS go ride to a banging cafe and eat amazing cake go leave your car at home and get fit and improve your health i mean if this bike can open up those opportunities and experiences to more people then it’s only going to be a good thing right so it gets the thumbs up from me if you agree please hit the thumbs up button as well i’d be really interested to hear your thoughts so get involved in the comment section down below and if you don’t already subscribe to GCN please make sure you do so we really appreciate your

  1. My road bike was £1400 which isn’t ‘cheap’, very similar specs to this and I love it. Recently started trying to ride with other people however and I feel poor 😂

  2. Am on a domane al5 , and ride 80-100km every weekend, I often feel ashamed to see all the others on the road with top end williers and pinarellos ! But my bike does the same job as the others 😌

  3. CANYON needs to #FixYourShit on componentry sizing though. For a Direct-To-Customer supplier Crank Length/Saddle Width/Stem Length/Handlebar Width should be drop down menu options at point of sale.
The tiny sizes still come with 40cm bars and 170mm cranks… WHY!?
Saddles are personal, it's not one size fits all, and stems come in many sizes which CANYON supplies in the first place.

The bike itself seems spot on otherwise. Outstanding even.

  4. I may have missed it in your video – did you mention a weight on this bike? I understand it's sort of a new entry level but weights always important to consider.

  5. Keeping it short and sweet, the bike you’ve got that makes you happy and enjoying every ride on it, is the best one you have!

Blake Samson really mentioned this a few years ago and I agree with this one!

Thanks Si and GCN for this very fun and informative video! 🔥🔥🔥

  6. problem is, for the same price, you can get the brand new Letcric e-bike. I know it's a different market, but if $1000 is your budget, you gotta get the thing that replaces a car, and gets you to work (without arriving a sweaty mess). Honestly, 1K for that bit of alloy, or for the same price, a bike with front suspension air fork, a 500w motor, huge battery, bullet proof construction, other various electronics and the same hydraulic brakes? Bike manufactures can complain about margins all they want, but there is no question that on value, even this entry level canyon, is grossly overpriced compared to the Lectric. 8 years ago, i bought a Schwinn road bike with a similar spec, but rim breaks and a shimano 8 speed, for $300. Yeah, it's Schwinn and won't impress at the bike club, but in the end, it's always the upgrades to your legs that matter. Bikes can be cheaper. The problem you are describing is a problem the bike manufactures have created for themselves.

  7. I agree.. but…. Why is it always cycling that’s criticized for being so expensive? Nobody bats an eye at the cost of let’s say Golf upwards of 3k for a driver!!! And let’s not talk about greens fees… how about auto racing?? Equestrian?? My son plays tennis…2 or 3 rackets at 200$, new sneakers every 2 months, and club fees..know I know it’s a cycling channel but it’s not the only expensive activity…

  8. Fantastic bike at an amazing price. It's just a real shame that the smaller sizes come with inappropriately sized components. 40cm bars and 170mm cranks on a 2XS?

  9. I think this message that everything became too expensive is not true but resonates well with the audience. Around 1996 my father bought me my fist racing bike. I chose all the components. Shimano Rx100, Reynolds steel frame. Clipless pedals and gear shifters in brake levers were too expensive, so I had to give up on that… and in the end I paid around 650€ (was not Euro back then, but making the conversion..). It was quite an effort in the 90's to pay this for a bike that was basically entry level. There was no other groupset for racing bikes cheaper than RX100, 105 was quite new and just slightly more expensive than rx100

  10. Good to see a mainstream supplier recognizing that not everyone wants or needs a bike that costs as much as two year old car. A good alternative to going to the Far East to get an affordable decent bike.

  11. I bought my first Hard Tail for £80 second hand from my mate who'd had it from new. 6 months later I bought a brand new Hard Tail for £799. 18 months after that I bought my first full suspension MTB for £2500. A year later I bought my first road bike for £799. 3 years later a new better one for £1800. Last year an even better full carbon road bike for £3400. Entry price bikes are absolutely essential. They help build confidence and gain experience. They're easy to learn how to maintain, upgrade and work on yourself. I know too many riders who have jumped in at a high price point and have had nothing but trouble because of their own ignorance in riding and maintenance. For under £1k that bike looks and sounds amazing. Great words Simon. Very important words too. 👍🏻

  12. 4:34 is Simon perhaps a bit TOO excited about this bike? 😂 I think this bike, and others like it, are great and I'm sure more manufacturers will be following suit with CUES for road. A slight negative for me would be the press-fit BB, but I guess that keeps the frame cost down. The deal breaker though would be that the smallest crankset Canyon fit is a 170mm, even down to the 2XS frame size. Canyon are usually much better than this at offering suitably sized componentry for the frame size.

  13. It's awesome to see some high-quality new bikes at a reasonable price point. With this one, you'd get 95% or more of the fun of a top-end bike at maybe 10-15% of the cost of a high-end bike.

  14. It's 1500 USD.
More bikes should be available around 500-600 USD (new), and that surely won't be as good as this one, but without a doubt, still fun.
And then, in the used market, you can find cheap decent bikes.

Our phones are arguably much more impressive feat of technology, yet you can get a good phone for 100, 200USD used. It will do what you need.

Yet bikes are not a niche, which could'v explained the prices… or is that just how it looks to me over where I live? 😅

  15. A decent looking bike but here in Australia you can get a bike with grx brakes and gears. grx hydro brakes and maybe tubeless tyres and thru headset cabling for that kind of money. Merida silex 400 for example.

  16. Bicycles are still way too expensive. I have to look at used bikes to purchase (some of which are costly in their own right) because new bikes are ridiculously expensive and overpriced. And don't get me started on groupsets and other components.

  17. Yes I have complained before about Canyon selling direct – but this promotion of a sponsor goes way too far. Reviews have to be independent regardless of how honest you think you are, you just simply can't review a product that you partner with. And using the angle of cycling becoming expensive comes across as down right cynical and crass advertising. The next step in this type of promotion is to get a TV network to do a 'news' item about it. This is the video where I unsubscribe. Understand – this is not an individual gripe – you have a conflict of interest – regardless of discloser, it casts aspersions on all internet reviews, it is the antithesis of journalism.

  18. Absolutely agree with the sentiment , started cycling early 80s on my Dads old 60s touring bike, got the bug, upgraded and have had a few great bikes since. But nothing i will ever ride again will compare to those early days of discovery on my first (racing) bike. Just ride. This bike looks fantastic for the price point.
