[Music] there is a lot of interest around e-cargo bikes at the minute and rightly so specially designed bikes that allow you to transport loads of stuff whether that’s your weekly shop or several children or even work related things like tools or perhaps a camera person e-cargo bikes are great bikes that you can use instead of a car and who wouldn’t want that ride instead of drive making getting around fun instead of a chore different types of cargo bikes those where the main load carrying capacity is in front of the rider and knows where the main load carrying capacity is behind the rider in this video i’m going to compare the two different types it’s not a review let’s be clear these bikes are so different they each have their own respective strengths so hopefully by watching this you’ll be able to know which one might be better suited to you and actually there are quite a lot of similarities before we even get going both of these have electric motors to assist you as you pedal now you can get cargo bikes without pedal assist but with the motor on there it means that you can ride up hills even when you’re fully loaded which is therefore not essential but almost both of these have bosch cargo line motors which when in turbo mode are super powerful amplifying your power by 400 they also have massive batteries on so you can rack up plenty of kilometers before recharging both have built-in lights that run off the main batteries both also have security features built in although you will still need to carry a good lock with you as well and in another node to practicality both of these also have full mud guards fitted which is an absolute essential and lastly interestingly as well i think given the two different looks of these bikes they’re actually rated to be able to carry the same maximum gross weight so 200 kilos which has to include rider bike and also your cargo what about the differences then we will start by looking more specifically at the front loader as you can see this is from reese and muller who are a german brand they’ve got a large catalog of electric bikes most of them urban and two of which are front loading cargo bikes the load 75 and the slightly smaller load 60. now this one you may already have seen here on gcn has made a light work of carrying an eight-foot christmas tree to be fair the load-carrying strengths of a bar like this are not laying massively oversized objects over the top but actually having a solid and large place to put things in very much like the boot of a car or the trunk of a car now on this one you can get boxes with higher sides you also get lockable lids as well which i think if i was going to buy a front-loading cargo bike is something that i would look out for as you can see a front loading cargo bike is also a great place to transport children there’s two kids seats in this one both with harnesses you can get up to three actually in front loader depending on how many children you’re carrying i’ve found up to about 125 130 centimeters tall seems to be about the maximum but that’s just based on personal experience you can also get a little canopy that goes over the top to protect your children from rain and wind and snow and whatever else and i gotta say it looks so cool imagine how amazing would it be traveling around in that you’ve got a little blanket going on in there wind and rain lashing at it i mean i’d be frankly quite jealous if i was sat up there now clearly when you’ve got a big load carrying capacity at the front of the bike it is going to be a little bit longer so this one measures out at one minute i’d say roughly 253.4 centimeters compared to a typical city bike which is probably about 1.8 meters the rear loader that i’ve got here is the turn gsd which is becoming something of an icon it’s perhaps not your typical reloading cargo bike because it’s built around much smaller wheels just 20 inches and it keeps the bike more compact as you can see here although actually as we said both bikes have additional features built in like the fact that you can fold the handlebars down to help with storage also the saddle will drop and actually this one can be stored on its end which is perfect if you live in an apartment you’ve got nowhere to store your bike this is also quite light for a cargo bike as well and again that’s perhaps something to consider if access is an issue there are a myriad of different ways of carrying things on this bike but unlike the front loader no one big solid space in which to put things you do however have this on the back which is called the clubhouse it’s designed for allowing you to safely transport two older kids but you could also fit a crate in there that gives you some solid space and you can still fit the panniers below they can fit 52 liters in per side there’s also another accessory you can get called a storm box which fits on top of the panniers and gives you a total of 160 liters of space in one place and then of course you’ve got your front rack too which can carry another 20 kilos of weight it can be customized in various different ways as i said this though is designed to be able to carry two older children i think perhaps it can be a little bit taller on this because it’s like being satisfied a normal bike if however you can’t trust them to sit still or they’re too small to be able to do that you can get two dedicated child seats that you can strap them securely into and again that fits on the back here in total both types of bike can probably carry a similar amount of stuff in this case both of them have the same payload so the maximum amount of weight that the bike can carry 200 kilos in both instances and that includes you the rider the bike itself plus your cargo 2. the difference then i guess is that the front loader in this instance can fit three children in as opposed to two on this one and that front compartment is perhaps better suited for carrying larger bulky items but again it has to be said if you do want to carry large and bulky items you can always fit a trailer onto either bike it will quickly bolt straight on a front loader is a bigger bike though as we’ve seen but it’s not harder to ride as such although when you first get on it it does feel different to a standard bike so the turning circle is larger but it is still nippy and the load carrying is down low so it still feels very stable your center of gravity is nice and low very occasionally on rubbish cycling infrastructure you might get stuck on sections that are designed to stop mopeds but fortunately those seem to be few and far between and increasingly fewer and further between a rear loader meanwhile does feel more like a normal bike because in this case the dimensions are the same now in conclusion i do not think that one design be it front loader reload or utility bike is inherently better than the other they’re very different and that’s great that’s exactly what we need choice and variety because everyone’s needs are going to be slightly different i mean do you have a garage or some dedicated bike storage where you can fit a larger bike or do you live in an apartment how much do you want to carry what do you want to carry if you’ve got kids how many how old everyone is going to have a slightly different agenda when they’re looking to buy their bike and so there’s a few questions that you might want to ask yourselves unfortunately i can’t make the decision for you but rest assured that any cargo bike i’ve ridden has been a lot of fun and personally i think that’s the most important thing when you’re bombing around town on it as opposed to being stuck in your car if you already own a cargo bike then make sure you get involved in the comment section as well let us know what you chose and why you chose it i’d be super interested to hear your thoughts lastly please give this video a big thumbs up if you’ve enjoyed it

So i couldn't technically ride those bikes im pretty sure i weight more than 200 kg
I havenโt seen an inexperienced cyclist able to or comfortable with riding a front loader. Especially not safe in crowded cities and with beloved little ones (Italian parent ๐)
My entire early childhood was spent in one of these xD a three wheeler though
The one with longe back space is called long tail bike, not cargo bike. Rule of a thumb: cargo bikes have cargo box. Van and pickup truck have different names, they're not van vs. van or pickup vs. pickup. Great information otherwise, thanks!
What kind of cargo bike would be best for rural commuting with kids?
Do you have any updates about what new cargo bikes and trikes are out on the market including cube bikes and the vok bikes please

I guess one important difference between a front-loader and rear-loader is the view of the passengers. I haven't rode a cargo bike yet but we have a tandem bike. My wife sits behind me and sees my huge back in front of her. She says it would be nicer if she could see the road instead.
this was super informative
My "cargo bike" (if you can call it that) is a kind of DIY project.
I got a secondhand bike for about ยฃ150. Then got an e-bike conversion kit. Then I got a detachable back-trailer.
I'm not sure if that technically counts as a "cargo bike", but, it works for me ๐
My dog gets to ride on the back of my Big Dummy; she loves to stick her head under my arm for that front-seat view. Smiles from everyone we pass ๐ Also great for grocery store, etc.

Nice but way too puny for my use. I need a large, really large capacity, so I can transport large amounts of stuff to and from my storage unit, about 5 km each way on very flat paved roads, so it doesn't even have to be electric.

I predict bad sales for the cago in the spanish market
This cargo bike looks really good, and our company happens to be producing this type of car as well. If you are interested, you can come to me.
this is the future where many should go for only the PRICE TAG is the big problem here
Front-loading is better, especially for kids. What kid wants to smell their parents bike farts? You guys are just trying to be diplomatic, which is fine, but at the same time… you need to not be.
