[Music] the greatest tours of France of all time the tour to France is the most famous and prestigious cycling race in the world the first edition was organized in 1903 by Henry Desk Range it takes place every year in July for 21 days covering a distance of 3,500 km which varies from year to year the race consists of several stages flat roads mountain roads and time trials each stage winner receives a special jersey the yellow jersey is worn by the race leader the green jersey is worn by the best sprinter the polka dot jersey is worn by the best mountain bike climber the white jersey is worn by the best young cyclist here are some of the greatest tours of France of all time number five 1978 3,000 mi 42 countries this was the year of the first modern-day tour to France which included a time trial for the first time ever the winner would be decided not by who could ride the fastest over flat terrain but by who could endure the grueling 200 km individual time trial that would test every rider’s ability to push their bodies to the limit a young Dutch rider named Jupil would become the first winner of this new style of tour to France he would also go on to win two more stages and ultimately finish in second place behind Bernard Hinno but it was his performance in that first ever modern-day time trial that cemented his place in Tour to France history number four 1986 3,600 m 22 countries the 1986 tour to France was one of the most controversial in history it was the last tour to France that would be decided by a time trial and it would also be the last tour to France that would feature riders from both the USA and Australia greg Lemond of the USA and Phil Anderson of Australia would go head-to-head in the time trial and it would come down to just a few seconds in the end Leond would win the stage and the tour to France by a mere 8 seconds this would make him the first non-European to win the tour to France and he would go on to win two more tours in 1989 and 1990 but it was his performance in that 1986 time trial that really cemented his place in tour to France history number three 1996 3,800 m 21 countries this was the year of the Festina scandal five riders from the Festina team were caught with high levels of testosterone after a routine test this led to the disqualification of the entire team and a complete overhaul of cycling s rules and regulations regarding doping despite all the controversy it was still an amazing year for the sport there were nine different stage winners and six different yellow jersey wearers in the end it came down to just a few seconds again just like in 1986 and it would be Bjarn Ree of Denmark who would win the tour of France by just 55 seconds over second place finisher Richard Verank number two 2004 4,215 mi 21 countries this was the year that Lance Armstrong won his sixth consecutive tour to France he would become only the second person in history to win six tours joining the great jock on Catalia but it was far from an easy victory armstrong would have to fight off challenges from Jan Olrich Ivan Basso and more in the end he would win by a comfortable margin of 6 minutes and 45 seconds but it was the closest race for the green jersey the points classification that really stole the show at the end of the day it would come down to just two points between Robbie Mchuan of Australia and Thor Hush Hov of Norway hushovd would take the green jersey by just two measly points number one 2020 3,139 mi 21 countries this was the year that everything changed the tour to France was postponed from its traditional July start date to August due to the CO 19 pandemic when it eventually began it was without spectators but even without spectators it was still an amazing race there were seven different stage winners and five different yellow jersey wearers in the end it would come down to just 20 seconds between today Pogar of Slovenia and Primo Raglick of Slovenia pogar would take the yellow jersey by just 20 seconds becoming the first Slovenian to win the tour of France these are just a few of the greatest tours of France of all time which one is your favorite let me know in the comments below if you enjoyed this video please give it a thumbs up thanks for watching see you next time
