Cheshire West and Chester Council encourages residents to cycle more and offer Bikeability training with our cycle training partner BikeRight!, ensuring that both children and families gain the skills and confidence to ride safely.
This video shows the type of training that pupils complete as part of their Bikeability course and the benefits it brings to them.

uh my name is Mike Okeel I’m a bike ability instructor here in Cheshire West and I’ve been doing this for four years The role today is all about taking kids um to improve their cycling skills uh to help them uh ride more safely on the road um and actually to have fun cuz actually cycling is a great thing to do It’s a full day It starts off on the playground We look for very simple skills You know we check uh our clothes our helmets our bikes and then we check whether they can ride a bike which is quite important uh sometimes they can’t but we can teach them That’s not a problem As we move through the day the the activities that we take on uh get more interesting more challenging We practice things like signaling and looking over our shoulder and looking around us Um being aware of what’s going on when we’re on our bikes If we’re happy with that then we the rest of the day is actually on the road It’s a positive experience definitely It’s a fun day Um it’s quite challenging You know we often get kids who’ve never ridden on the road before but kids enjoy the challenge and that that’s actually really a positive thing And if you ride your bike in a nice consistent confident way competently then you can um actually have quite a lot of fun The bike ability program allows the children to um learn how to ride their bike safely and to check the equipment It also provides them with the opportunity to then be able to cycle to and from school safely So it’s really um positive experience for the children The fact that we’ve been able to loan bikes this year has really helped I think we’ll have more children be able to access it because of that Um and hopefully that will encourage them to when they move on to high school as well be able to use their bike safely going to and from high school but might also encourage more families here to be cycling to school as well rather than driving to to school I think it’s really worthwhile doing
