Hi y'all,
First time poster here. I never got too deep into vintage cycling, but have owned and ridden a few sweet old bikes I've picked up at swaps near me. A couple of Cilos, a Univega, and a Fuji, all from the late 70s/early 80s. Always solid and, more importantly, always fast 🙂
I just picked this up off craigslist a couple days ago from a guy who said it was his father's. His dad was a cycling fanatic and I guess owned quite a few vintage racers. This was apparently his "everyday" ride for a while. The seller didn't have much other info, other than he remembers his dad saying once that the saddle was "worth more than the bike".
Obviously she needs quite a bit of work, and I'm taking her to the local guy this afternoon to get a plan together. In the meantime though, I've tried to do a little research on the closest thing to a brand I can find on this thing: VYMAX. The internet has turned up very little (next to nothing) on that name, so I've got it in my head that it may have been either a local brand that never quite got the recognition of a big name like Peugeot, or just a local wrap slapped on a middle-of-the-road manufacturer without much of a reputation.
While I couldn't find anything on VYMAX, I did look into some of the components.
The derailleur is made by Simplex. This one seems to most closely resemble their Prestige series, probably manufactured between 1975-1980.
The skewers are marked BlocG, and the only concrete mention of them online I've been able to find was in this post from 2006. According to a couple commenters, the skewers seem to be French.
The brakes are MAFAC Racers, which, according to commenters on this post , were cheap even by 70s standards, and prone to rust easily. I'll probably see about replacing those.
I've looked online and seen "Type Tour de France" on quite a few bikes from quite a few manufacturers. Seems like it was a fairly common claim made during the boom of the 70s/80s, maybe nothing more than a marketing scheme? Would love more info if anyone has it.
One of the wheels is Mavic, although I can't quite tell what year. The iteration of the logo shown in the photo was used between 1974-1996.
So what's the deal? Did I buy a dud? Is this bike totally cheap and worthless (aside from the cool factor)? Or is it worth it to put in a few dollars and hours to bring it up to code. And what the hell is VYMAX?!
Thanks in advance 🙂
