How far would you go to prove your love? Well, this man went as far as cycling from India all the way to Sweden to join the woman he loves. But this isn’t even the craziest part. You see, this man comes from a tiny village in the middle of the jungle. He lives in absolute poverty and he is promised a life of misery. Yet, one day, he meets a beautiful woman who’s traveling from Sweden. Despite having everything against them, the two fall madly in love with each other. But soon, she has to return to Sweden. She offers to buy him a plane ticket so he can come with her, But he’s too proud to accept. Instead, he promises he will join her by his own means. But a few months pass and reality settles. It will take him many years to save up enough money before he can afford the plane ticket. And there is no way he can wait any longer to see her again. But he also wants to remain true to his word, so he cannot ask her for help. Thus, he decides to sell everything he owns to buy a second-hand bike and he gets on his way. He is determined to cycle thousands of miles in order to prove his love. But there is no doubt in his mind: It will all work out. After all, it was all decided by fate the moment he was born. It was the year 1949 in a tiny village in India when Pradyumna Kumar Mahanandia came into the world. But I will call him PK for obvious reasons. You see, PK was born as an untouchable, which means he was at the very bottom of India’s caste system. Basically, he was set up for a terrible life with no hope to escape poverty and discrimination. But fate had other plans for PK. And it all starts with a prophecy. It turns out that in PK’s village, it is very common for astrologists to attend the birth of a baby. But what the astrologist says to PK’s parents that day is out of the ordinary. He tells them that unlike the vast majority of Indians, PK isn’t going to have an arranged marriage. Instead, he will fall in love with a woman from a faraway land born under the sign of Taurus. He also makes the bold prediction that this woman will own a forest and, out of all things, play the flute. But regardless of the prophecy, growing up isn’t easy for PK. He suffers from relentless bullying and discrimination. On a daily basis, other kids throw rocks at PK. They call him names, they treat him like an outcast. And sadly, kids are not the only ones to bully him. His own school teachers constantly remind him how stupid he is. They tell him untouchables shouldn’t be in the same class as other kids. And if PK wants to pray, the priest yells at him so he doesn’t approach the temple. As a teenager, PK’s self-esteem is destroyed and he cannot take it anymore. He feels like he doesn’t have a place in this world. He doesn’t want to live like that. So he goes to the river, dives to the bottom and decides to hold on to a boulder until he drowns. But after a few seconds, the rock starts moving and suddenly PK finds himself back with his head above the water. For him, this is fate, offering him a second chance at life. and he intends to embrace it as much as he can. He will not let his untouchable status dictate what he can and cannot do anymore. So he decides to apply to art school and become an artist. But going to the university is expensive and there is just no way he can afford it. except for the one and only free school around. But because it’s free, it is extremely competitive with hundreds of applicants. But incredibly, PK doesn’t just pass, but ends up being accepted with the best overall score out of all the candidates. He has found his way, his talent shines, and for the first time in his life, his caste doesn’t define him. After a few months at his local university, he is so brilliant that he is sent to the best art school in the country, along with a full scholarship. Bullied and treated like he was worthless most of his life, PK is now heading to the capital of India, where he will study along with people that come from the richest and most powerful families of the country. Unfortunately, just when things seem to be looking up for PK, His life is actually about to take a turn for the worse. It’s only been a few months since PK has arrived in Delhi when, suddenly, PK’s scholarship money stops coming. Without a proper banking system in place, it is sadly very easy for a middleman to put the money in his own pockets without leaving any evidence. PK cannot do anything about it and soon he cannot afford his rent anymore and he finds himself forced to sleep under a bridge. He keeps going to school for a while but after 6 months of living in these conditions, he just can’t take it anymore. So he walks toward train tracks to put an end to all his suffering. He came all the way to the capital from his village to make a name for himself. But at the end of the day, he feels like there is nothing an untouchable like him can do in this world. So he sits in the middle of the rails under the burning sun and waits for a train to set him free from all his troubles. That’s when the bystander notices PK and tells him that he can wait all he wants. No train will come today. After all, there is a massive strike throughout the entire country. How did he not hear about this? He gets confused at first, but then he understands. This isn’t a coincidence, but a sign that he is meant to keep living. Although he still doesn’t have a place to stay and he’s still starving, he now feels a renewed sense of purpose. So he returns to class and this time he will do whatever it takes to be successful. And every day after class he goes to a popular square visited by tourists where he draws portraits of foreigners in exchange for a few coins. And it looks like PK’s luck is finally turning around because one day he catches sight of Valentina Tereshkova. This Soviet woman is the first woman in the world who became an astronaut. And of course, she is a huge celebrity. Somehow, PK manages to sneak through the crowd and impresses her with his art. After that, she asks PK to draw multiple portraits of her. And just like that, he becomes an overnight local star in Delhi. This fame allows him to charge more for his portraits. So now PK can finally afford a place to live and regular meals. And it’s during this time that PK meets a girl. But she’s not the one you may expect. This girl is a student who goes to the same school as PK. She hits on him first. He is a bit reluctant, but he slowly opens up. She earns his trust as time goes on, and soon they start dating. She isn’t a foreigner like in the prophecy, but she comes from a different state, far away from his village. And although she is from a very wealthy family, her parents are very nice with PK, so it’s decided they will get married. They’re having dinner at the girl’s parents’ house. They’re celebrating the news, and everyone is having a good time. But suddenly, her dad asks PK which caste is from. The atmosphere turns tense, as PK replies that whatever caste belongs to shouldn’t matter. But his fiancée’s father has a different opinion. When he understands that PK is an untouchable, he becomes furious. He chases PK out and urges him to never speak to his daughter again. The following days, PK tries to talk with the girl, but she shuts him down. She says she cannot defy her father and that she will marry another man instead. Once again, PK is brought back to his caste, but PK isn’t the same as he used to be. This time, he doesn’t think about ending his life. This time, he remains sure of himself and doesn’t allow the pain to bring him down. This time, he is convinced that all the obstacles he faces are part of the prophecy and that they will guide him toward the right path. And he’s right! On December 17, 1975, he is again drawing portraits in the square when a beautiful woman with long blonde hair and blue eyes approaches him. This is Charlotte. Born in Sweden, 21 years earlier, she had always wanted to visit India. Since she was a child, she had been fascinated by Indian culture and its people, many of whom she had met during her studies in London. So she had gotten into a Volkswagen van with three friends and traveled for 22 days along the hippie trail all the way to Delhi. And once in Delhi, she heard about PK’s art from the local newspapers and she had come to see his skills with her own eyes. She is now facing him. She asks PK to draw her portrait and while he draws her, she is drawn by him. She is instantly attracted by the curly- haired man’s warmth and simplicity. But whereas Charlotte is calm, PK’s head is about to explode! He is so nervous, his hands are shaking! He wants to do justice to Charlotte’s beauty but despite his incredible artistic abilities, he just cannot do it! So he asks Charlotte to come back the next day so he can try again. But the next day, the same thing happens and he asks her to come back a third time. On the third day, she does come back and PK gathers up his courage and asks Charlotte a few questions. Were you born under the sign of Taurus? Do you own a forest? Do you play the flute? To all these questions, Charlotte replies yes. PK is sure of it, she is the one from the prophecy, it has to be ! So he tells her: This is decided in the heavens, we were destined to meet. But Charlotte is flustered by PK’s statement, she doesn’t really understand what he means. But PK doesn’t beat around the bush, he looks at her and straight up says, with full confidence and resolve, quote: You will be my wife. Unquote. Okay. Okay. I know you might think it sounds crazy and maybe even a bit creepy. I mean, I know for sure that a lot of you would probably freak out quite a bit in this situation. I mean, I personally would, but not Charlotte. Well, she does calming down a little bit and tells him to hold his horses. But for some reason she doesn’t run away. And over the following days, PK and Charlotte meet again several times. He shows her around the city in which he has been living for three years now. They wander around hand in hand, they visit local markets, they explore monuments, and they go to the movie theater. Just like that, they have become inseparable. They’ve only known each other for a few days, yet it’s like they have always been together. So Charlotte follows her heart and the two of them get into a train and head out to PK’s Village. There, she doesn’t feel like a stranger at all. Although she’s never been in this part of the world before, it’s like coming back home. She is instantly accepted by PK’s family and soon their relationship receives the approval of the village, and PK’s father holds a tribal ceremony to celebrate their reunion. But unfortunately, their intense romance is about to get cut short as Charlotte has to go back to Sweden. They have spent just over two weeks together, but their lives have been changed forever. When the time for goodbyes come, Charlotte and PK make a promise to each other. He will join her as soon as he’s done with school. At the train station, PK watches Charlotte disappear on the horizon. His pride vanishes as tears run down his face. His heart is so full, but he suddenly feels so empty. Nevertheless, he knows he has to work hard to keep his promise. So over the next year he graduates from school and draws as many portraits as he can to save up the most money possible. Charlotte and PK keep in touch via letters but eventually he realizes that it will take him many years to gather enough money to afford a plane ticket to Sweden. As time passes he understands that he has to do something or he will miss out on his destiny. He has to make the first step and he has to do it now! Otherwise, he will never see Charlotte again. So he sells everything he owns. He buys a second hand bike and he gets on his way to Sweden. His destination? Boras, the town where Charlotte resides. He has no idea how long it will take him. He has no idea how hard it will be. He has no idea how to even get there. For now, all he knows is that he has to follow the direction from which the sun sets every evening. But that’s enough, and so his cycling journey begins. All day, every day, he is biking. At night, he sleeps on the side of the road. He is leaving everything behind. His only possessions are now his bike, some art supplies and a sleeping bag. He’s been on the road for a while already when he reaches the border between India and Pakistan. Unfortunately, his trip is cut short. when the officer at the border refuses to let him enter the country. But he isn’t alone in this case, there is a lot of tension between India and Pakistan, and no one can cross. Luckily, he meets a German tourist in the same situation. He tells him about his story, and the German man offers to buy PK a plane ticket from Amritsar to Kabul, therefore bypassing Pakistan. PK would normally refuse, but he cannot go through Pakistan and there isn’t really any way around it. So this is the only solution. But the journey is just getting started. And once PK arrives in Kabul in Afghanistan, he understands right away that this adventure is going to be the biggest challenge of his life. For days, he bikes through the desert under excruciating conditions. The air is dry and the sun burns his skin. It’s also very lonely, there is little to no civilization on the road through the desert. His own shadow is his only friend in this vast and isolated landscape. But somehow he feels at peace. He isn’t sad about leaving his home country. After all he has always been treated so poorly by his fellow countrymen. But suddenly, in the middle of nowhere, he finds a broken car on the side of the road. Outside the vehicle, a European girl is crying for help. She is alone and injured with no one else to rescue her. It’s been a few days since PK left Kabul for Kandahar. He is now closer to the next city than the one he is coming from, but Kandahar doesn’t have the kind of hospital the woman needs. And for PK, there is no way he can just abandon the poor lady to herself. She will surely die if he does nothing. So he carries her all the way back to Kabul, where she receives the care she desperately needs. PK just saved her life, but he has lost some time and a lot of energy. But despite that, he gets back on his bike and manages to reach the next city. But once in Kandahar, he learns a devastating piece of information. During a discussion with a tourist from Belgium, PK realizes that being Swedish means a person is from Sweden and not from Switzerland. PK doesn’t even know where Sweden is. So when his new friend points out Sweden on a map, this is quite a shock for PK. Suddenly, he remembers all the letters he exchanged with Charlotte, and now he understands better why she seemed so worried for him. For the first time since he left Delhi, PK seriously doubts his ability to reach his final destination, but he cannot look back. If he doesn’t complete this journey, then he will die trying. For PK, there is no other option. Deep down, he knows he is driven by emotion, not rational thinking. He knows there is no guarantee she even acknowledges him when he gets to Sweden. He knows it’s not normal to do what he’s doing, but he still chooses to follow his gut. Fortunately, the people he meets along the way are all so warm and generous. Almost every day, he meets people who offer him food and shelter in exchange for drawing a few portraits. And when he explains why he is traveling, he is surprised that no one calls him foolish. But this gives PK the feeling that everything is possible. It gives him so much hope and courage. So far from his home, his untouchable status means nothing. And just like that it’s already been two months since he left Delhi. He biked all the way through Iran and he is now entering Turkey. And at this point he’s had enough with the biking, he just wants to reach his final destination. And who could blame him? He has struggled enough already. And the good thing is that hitchhiking proves to be quite successful in Turkey. And that’s because truck drivers love the portraits he makes. Yet in Istanbul, he realizes how much distance still separates him from Charlotte. During his journey, PK communicates with his friends by sending letters through the post office at each city he stops by. But this time there is a surprise waiting for him. He receives a train ticket from the girl he saved in Afghanistan. She is back in her home in Austria’s capital, and she invites him to her place. After so much time on the road, PK feels like this journey will last for eternity, so he gladly accepts. He hops on the train and makes his way to Vienna. When he steps out of the train, he instantly feels like he is walking in a storybook. The streets are lined up with historical buildings whose architecture fills his artistic heart. But after the initial amazement, he turns his attention to the people around him, and his smile quickly fades away. Everyone looks so stressed! So when he joins the woman who bought him the train ticket, he has a lot of questions. She explains that culture in Europe is different. Here, people are more uptight and they can be quite cold. So for the first time, PK feels a bit homesick. After saying goodbye to his friend, he wanders around town, reflecting on his situation. So far, he’s had no doubt that Charlotte is waiting for him. But now that he thinks about it, it’s not impossible that she has changed her mind. What if she doesn’t want him anymore? On this remote continent, where everything and everyone looks so different from what he knows, PK starts second-guessing himself. That’s when he notices an art gallery. Of course, he enters and he starts observing the art being displayed. Lost in his thoughts, he doesn’t see the gallery owner approach him. The man is friendly and PK feels comfortable enough to share his story and his doubts with him. By the end of the conversation, PK has made- up his mind. Even if Charlotte rejects him, he cannot go back to India before he finishes this journey. So he spends all the money he has left to get himself a train ticket to Sweden. But first, the train has to stop at the West Germany border. And it’s not going to go very smoothly. When the immigration officer finds that PK has no visa, they make him get out of the train and they start interrogating him. Because of his skin color, they are right away suspecting PK to be a dr*g dealer. Not only that, but they also accuse him of being an illegal immigrant coming to West Germany to steal jobs from German citizens. But PK doesn’t even want to stay in West Germany, he just needs to pass through the country. So he tries to explain his story. He is going to Sweden to meet with his Swedish wife. But the police don’t believe a word. Remember, the ceremony between Charlotte and PK was a traditional one. It’s not recognized by the law, so PK has no way to prove what he says. And why would a white woman be with a brown man anyway? That doesn’t make any sense for the officer. So he calls for reinforcements and additional police officers quickly arrive to hold PK firmly. They are about to call the embassy to send him back to India. And PK knows.. Here people abide by the rules. They don’t really care about love and emotions. They won’t let him pass. But he is overwhelmed by his emotions and he cannot help but cry. You can’t stop me! He says while sobbing. He knows it’s pointless to protest but he just cannot accept having come so far just to be sent back like that. But suddenly an officer proclaims: This guy is telling the truth! The officer was searching P.K.’s belongings when he found an Indian newspaper article that shows a picture of P.K. and Charlotte together. The police officers start looking at each other and the tension eases. And so against all odds, PK is allowed to continue his journey. But if this event proved to be challenging, what PK is about to learn next is going to shake him to his core. The train is now making a stop at the Swedish border. PK is in line to face an immigration officer. Another lady is waiting behind PK and she asks him if he has a return ticket. PK replies that he only has a one-way ticket. Immediately, the lady opens her purse takes some cash out of it, and stuffs it in PK’s bag. Confused, he doesn’t have time to understand what just happened when it’s his turn. As soon as PK approaches, the immigration officer narrows his eyes in dislike, and asks in a condescending tone what is the purpose of PK’s visit to Sweden. PK smiles, and proudly says he is married to a Swedish woman, he still doesn’t have any paperwork to prove it, but this time he doesn’t forget to show the officer the newspaper article that allowed him to cross the West Germany border. Although the officer is forced to accept his story, he makes a revelation that wipes the smile of PK’s face. If PK’s story is true and Charlotte’s last name starts with the particle Von, then it means that she is a descendant of a Swedish noble family. Until that moment, PK had no clue that the girl he loved was related to royalty. She had never talked about her family’s ancestry to him. So how do you think PK reacted? He, the man whose caste was a cause of so many troubles and almost pushed him to take his own life. Well, this leaves him humbled. She knew about PK’s status the whole time but still decided to follow her heart despite her own status. This made him fall in love with Charlotte even more. And PK’s reaction isn’t exactly pleasing the officer, so he doesn’t stop there and adds: Your would-be father-in-law is definitely going to fire his gun at you. If you love your life, run away from this country right now. But PK doesn’t fumble, he wants to see the woman he loves, no matter the cost. That’s when he understands the gesture of the lady. He takes the money she gave him out of his bag and he puts it on the counter. The officer looks at it with a smirk on his face and allows PK to continue his trip. PK thanks the lady, and he now finds himself in Sweden. Finally, he did it! He managed to travel from India all the way to Sweden just like he promised. But will Charlotte come pick him up? Near the train station, he finds a phone booth and calls the woman for whom he traveled the world. As soon as she answers the phone, PK’s heart skips a beat. He feels overwhelmed by a new kind of joy that most people have probably never experienced. She is on her way to meet with him, but now he wonders whether or not the woman from the highest ranks of Swedish society will accept him. Yet, an hour later, when she presents herself in front of him, all his doubts go away. They both stand in front of each other without saying a word until Charlotte finally breaks the ice. Välkomna Pradyumna, welcome to Sweden. It has been 16 months since they last saw each other, but now they are walking quietly hand in hand in the streets of Sweden. For PK, a lifetime of dreams turns into reality, and for the very last stretch of his journey, he gets into Charlotte’s call. However, PK now remembers the words of the immigration officer and he turns anxious at the thought of meeting Charlotte’s father. Is he going to chase him like the father of that Indian girl he dated? Does he really have a gun? What if he actually starts shooting at him? He starts shivering as he and Charlotte approach her parents’ house. However, he remains speechless when Charlotte’s father gives him the most decent reception. And just like that, a loving handshake and an affectionate hug drive away all of PK’s fears. In fact, Charlotte’s parents are impressed by PK’s dedication and his love for their daughter. They accept him into their family right away, but not without violating their tradition. At a time when people of color are still not allowed to mix with a nobility, Charlotte’s family is breaking these rules and making PK a part of their family. But it’s not all sunshine and rainbows. After the first few days of excitement, the culture shock makes it hard for PK to fit in his new home. However, PK isn’t going back to India, he learns the language, and he takes classes to learn more about Swedish culture. And, little by little, he gets accustomed to his new life. He even finds a job as an art professor. Since then, many years have passed, and today, PK is well known in Sweden. He is a successful artist, with paintings exhibited all over the world. He also works as an advisor on art and culture for the Swedish government. And of course, he didn’t forget his Indian roots. He uses his notoriety to fight against discrimination against untouchables. As for PK’s relationship with Charlotte, the both of them got married shortly after PK arrived in Sweden, legally this time. It’s been about 45 years since PK arrived in Sweden, and he and Charlotte are still living happily together to this day. And if you ask PK what’s the secret to a long and happy marriage, he has a simple answer: When I enter the house, I park my ego outside. Although he has always believed in destiny, for him, fate is only the framework, a kind of contour, Maybe you are meant to live a certain life, but the specifics are up to your free will. No one else can decide for you, because at the end of the day, like PK, who decided to risk it all by following his heart, your life will be shaped by your own decisions.
