Race day is here! In this vlog, I take you through my full IRONMAN 70.3 Bolton experience — from early morning prep to crossing the finish line. You’ll see footage from the swim, bike, and run, and hear my honest thoughts throughout the day.
This race was a key part of my training for the upcoming DECA Triathlon — 10 IRONMANs in 10 days — and I’m proud to be doing it all in support of Rock 2 Recovery UK.

so here it is guys the famous finish line uh I’m here it’s currently 4:00 in the morning uh one of the strongest race morning starts was up at half past 2 uh alarm went off at 20 and uh yeah just cuz uh this year the race uh starts at quart 6 so means everything obviously is pushed back a little earlier and then because it’s roughly half an hour to um the uh swim start uh from here um we’ve kind of got to get there a little bit earlier so we can prep stick all our nutrition check the bike over check the tire pressure check um any sort of drama with that and everything stick it in the right gears um and everything and then uh yeah got that kind of hour buffer to make the allowances and so on so forth so yeah really looking forward to it is dead quiet at the moment around but um yeah hopefully with a bit of luck all said and done I’ll be crossing that finish line in roughly 6 and 1 half hours you know it’s about half 12 so wish me luck um if you guys a racer let me know how you did and uh how you found it and um yeah hopefully you’ve had uh an incredible race day a few of you have reached out to me on Instagram so thank you very much and uh all the best for yourselves literally walking down to the end of the street um so you’ve got all the the marquees by here over there this one’s the medical and then just after it is the athlete uh one where you get all your bags for afterwards as well as um a bit of food and drink for afterwards so uh and then after that you uh kind of come out the back a hero meet your family and friends and uh jobs are good and but yeah it was nice to meet a few of the Iron Man staff in the hotel we’re staying in we’re staying in a holiday in uh it’s where Iron Man staff stay so highly recommend it although last night I don’t know who it was someone was having a party and uh bassy music was blasting uh and did so until about 1 in the morning so strong level of sleep luckily I was able to um remember these uh little earbuds that I got called Happy Ears highly recommend them been using them since uh we traveled over to New Zealand and they were amazing on the plane and uh to be honest they’ve been amazing ever since so check it is at the moment it’s uh dry uh wind picks up every so often but fingers crossed it’s uh a dry one and then as soon as we finish down it can rain i don’t mind but yeah enjoy the video have a good day [Music] so here we are officially in uh transition and it is typical race day morning quiet you know uh the bus ride home was interesting Uh literally one of the guys had to give the bus driver some directions cuz he got lost halfway which is uh always a good sign but um nah it’s all good we’re here and uh more importantly bike is here so um literally just going to get the nutrition on there get uh get it all checked over um Finn always worry when it’s um the electronics in the rain and so on so forth so just going to check that over get it in all in uh the right gear and then yeah have a little look around luckily it is quart 5 and I’ve got till quart 7 to uh get my uh not 74 past 6 to get myself feeling good and nothing seem to have beat all the nonsense uh so yeah plenty of time to chill out all right speak to you in a bit [Music] [Music] [Music] so as you can see it is a lovely lovely swim this morning slight breeze on the way out but uh won’t be nothing new in regards to kind of sea swimming experience and so on so forth and if anything it’ll make it easier coming back in um which is always nice and also kind of the moment you turn out first um just because the way the wind is coming is coming across the course um but yeah wind’s not too bad compared to uh the last time I was here last time was crazy uh honestly this looked like it was the sea uh the last time I was here so uh yeah it’s beautiful here at the moment uh I’m hoping cuz uh we can see some some blue i’m hoping it’s a great sight to see and uh hopefully some more blue skies come out and we get a dry day not just for myself but for the other athletes and also more importantly the spectators i always feel better when uh it’s a dry day because makes the atmosphere better and uh just uh the overall vibe you know so yeah all settled uh nutrition’s on the bike uh one thing I did was recheck my tires uh obsessed with that uh so check the PSI on that uh that kind of held just because of the weather so sometimes dropper temperatures mean um dropping uh tire pressure so double check it um when you submit it and then obviously when you come out and um like I said before in previous videos uh if it is warmer just be uh aware that your tires will expand so if it’s quite high then naturally uh it can cause the valves to um hop and and kind of get damaged so um on the warmer races just uh drop that PSI uh down a little um and then reinflate in the mornings uh just to save you uh damaging your your wheels cuz naturally the mechanics have only got x amount of equipment so uh this is why I’m an hour early um I’ve got 55 minutes until race starts literally chilled uh the vibe here was pretty chill to be honest everyone looks calm uh everyone looks really quiet uh which is typical for race morning um stuff nice vibe in uh in transition good to see some uh familiar faces some some older faces some Iron Man staff that I haven’t seen in a while um and yeah literally um another another good tip to do is is check which gear your your chain is on um make sure it’s appropriate for the course um I’ve kind of put mine in the big ring at the front and kind of mid mid uh cassette at the back just so um I kind of got an easyish gear to kind of get my cadence up when um I’m coming out on the bike start guess get my bike legs on after the swim and then that way I can just easily just put it up a few gears uh once I’ve got the cadence and once I’ve got the speed for the second edition of a lot of people forget about that when they’re traveling and they don’t actually it can either be super hard gear from the last time they ridden it or super easy gear from when they last it and then they don’t have the power at the start so just check which gear your bike is in transition cuz uh it can be really really helpful i’ve got someone one of my clients um currently filming today so hopefully uh fingers crossed the footage is pretty good and um we get a lot of you guys on the film um certainly we’ll try to include as many many people as possible because um it’s a brilliant community and it’s uh good to include everyone else in in the videos and not just make it all about me all fans um and the athletes pumped there are hundreds of first timers which is amazing to see see the sport grow uh I’m a big big fan of that as a coach and as a person love seeing more more people coming to this sport so uh welcome uh hope you’re here for a long time and I hope you’re here for a good time so yeah all the best to you uh I’m going to join the queue now and uh get in there but UK 2025 we’re standing by less than 4 minutes to go yeah heat [Music] heat heat are you [Music] [Music] No [Music] heat [Music] [Music] [Music] everybody at [Music] Everybody down [Music] the hill [Music] hello everybody so I have officially finished the race i’ve got my if I can hold that got my shiny medal we’re here and uh did better than I expected so honestly thought I’d get between 6:30 and 640 and I came in at 6:04 uh which I am over the moon with but today’s course um was super super challenging the run was incredibly windy i’d say a good half of the course was a headwind about quarter was kind of neutral and then uh a quarter was that beautiful tailwind that helped me get that average back up on the bike um absolutely hammered the bike and then was super consistent um with uh the half mile so really really happy i’ll um do another video with my thoughts on the course uh it’s been incredible the the volunteers are still out here there’s people still out here now um giving it their best so uh yeah it’s been an incredible day and um love support I’ve had off people uh the kindness and um people uh supporters like subscribers um I’ve come up I’ve hugged them I’ve um kind of shake hands fist bumped did a little shaka towards each other uh ultimately like I’m just incredibly grateful for you all like you know so uh to everybody that came up to me to everybody cheering me everybody shouting my name thank you so so much because uh means the world and uh honestly you made my day today so thank you so so much um I got to go and grab my stuff and then um I saw chuck this video together and then do a little followup um about the day just so there’s there’s so much to talk about so uh if you guys want to do this race then uh that video is going to be for you like you know um it’s it’s an incredible course on a like a non windy day it could be incredibly fast for the bike but that one run one run one run one run one run one run one run one run one run one run one run one run one run one run one run one run one run one run one run one run one run course if you’re a strong runner it’s uh it’s this course is for you um I found the elevation incredibly tough um and um yeah incredible I honestly think it was uh tougher you doubled that that corset it would be tougher than uh the IM man here I reckon but um yeah I’ll tell you more about my course Great race and video Chris. I was a bit less than an hour behind you. I've waited until reaching 65 to begin my triathlon journey and think this was a great place to start. Tough day but loved every minute of it.
