Hey it’s the Drunktopus and welcome to Cologne
a city with a rich history and an even richer beer culture famously known for their style of
beer Kölsch! Now I’ve wanted to drink in the city for quite some time ever since I found
out they have a curious drinking system when it comes to drinking one (ding) of their beers.
Yes that beer that’s served in these teeny tiny glasses practically the size of a thimble. Join
me on a Kölsch crawl exploring some of the city’s most popular classic and perhaps a little detour
as I suck down a bunch of their local delicacy this stuff. Of course we’re starting our Kölsch
tour at the iconic Früh am Dom this historic brewery and restaurant is a must-visit for anyone
coming to town. All right let’s check this out… Stepping in here you’ll see that this is one
of the best-marketed places in town yes it’s 11:00 a.m. don’t judge me. The Kölsch itself is
light and refreshing and pretty easy to drink Now remember when I said strange drinking culture
here? Much of the tradition is to keep drinking until you place your glass upside down on the
table that signals that you finished drinking and drink you will and it’s the job of these
guys the Köbes or your server but when you put an empty one down you get a fresh one watch
this I love that love that oh the food here is pretty freaking good too! ‘My English not
very good’ The best beer is the town Früh, you must drink Früh Cheers bro! Again
too much chitchat let’s go back in time Okay nerd fact time building of the Cologne
Cathedral began in 1248 and this Gothic Masterpiece took over 7 centuries to
complete and wasn’t completed until 1880 But also in stark contrast
look where you can walk directly Gaffel am Dom Shhh I actually came
here before Früh because it opens at 10 and you will find a lot of people walking
in here directly from the train station Welcome to Gaffel am Dom this restaurant offers a little bit more of a modern take
on the traditional Kölsch experience – Bitteschön
– Danke (whoops – Take 2) Gaffel Kölsch is another of
the brands it’s very popular and way too easy to drink light refreshing incredibly
clean incredibly clear check that out That’s stuff. Yeah the restaurant here is a mix
of old and new which I really liked it was much larger than you thought. Now let’s chat about this
little guy this glass is called Stange it and it said to hold about 200Mls compared to the the
500mls that you get in Munich it’s unique glass shape that’s designed to help preserve the beer’s
delicate carbonation. What makes each of these places special and unique is the atmosphere
inside check this out. As I said this place is closest to the train station so you’ll find
a lot of people walking in with their luggage oh and these things just keep coming our next stop is Peter’s Brau House a popular Brewery with a restaurant known as
for delicious food and great beer and this place is not really set up for
drinking there a very very small standing area and of course no visit on this tour would be
complete without a light and refreshing It’s the perfect accompaniment to another one
and to be honest the service he was pretty slow but beautiful inside Brauhaus Peters
is more than just a beer hall it’s a brew with a rich history producing delicious Kölsch
for generations it may be the perfect place to keep this little Kölsch crawl kicking along
except it wasn’t it there was something off about this place that I just needed to to get
out of I had my two beers two beers only and then I left. Okay I wanted to like this
place it looked amazing inside I have to tell you but um the aggressive security
guard at the front not cool um standing area only complete chaos inside
of the bar but the beer was all right the beer was all right got to
say that but uh maybe skip this one Next up we have Brauhaus Sion it’s been here
since 1318 let’s wander in and see what kind of atmosphere we can find it’s bound to be authentic
also not really designed for drinking this place there was a small area just here that you
could enjoy but it was mainly a restaurant The food here is authentic as the atmosphere
and easily washed down by one of their Sion Kölsch Sion Sion I still don’t know how to say
this um it’s enjoyable it’s not exactly the the classic experience a little bit more of a modern
Brew Pub honestly yeah new modern theme the food was amazing and yes that’s that’s mustard Sion
good stuff it’s always lovely and festive here at Brauhaus Sion Small change of scenery
absolutely everything else is crazy inside so a little bit of nerd time let me just take a
little sip over here while I pop my spectacles on in fact the regulation was passed at the no
kidding Kölsch Konvention in 1985 setting a very strict set of guidelines ensuring that the
beer maintains its very unique character and quality not only that in 1997 they also decreed
that beer produced in a 50 km radius of Cologne and in accordance with the Kölsch convention can
only be called Kölsch okay last fact Kölsch is actually one of the tightly defined beer styles
in Germany much like well champagne in Champagne Welcome to Papa Joe’s beer Salon a unique and
Charming beer bar that takes you back in time and when I say back in time it’s like somewhere
hidden in the wild west with pictures adorning every wall and the ceiling the interior Papa
Joe’s is a little bit like a time machine where every corner tells a story from the past somehow
they gave me a big one what’s all that about Yup old timey stuff everywhere kind of cute down and
dirty and a little bit quirky I kind of like it honestly you could spend days looking at every
picture in this place and you still wouldn’t get through it all oh check out this little
thing a menu that activates these animatronics Papa Joes offers a selection of
Kölsch and a few other beers on Taps big on cocktails too friendly
stuff here they’re here to help yeah sorry for all the b-roll there is a lot
to see in this place like a lot a lot Got to be honest I’ve been this place
a little while now and it is absolutely wild inside absolutely crazy I never
would have thought I would have found anything like this in Cologne like I
said the Wild West maybe but not Cologne Now this joint was recommended
by a viewer when they said it was their favourite place when they came
to Cologne I took their advice seriously check this place out it’s clear that this is yet another
authentic experience this is a historic pub that’s been serving up Kölsch since
the 17th century and what I really liked about this is there was a restaurant
and also another area that you could come and have a nice quiet Kölsch in
and when I say a Kölsch I mean what’s the plural for Kölsch? Kölschesesess?
As we in Cologne they have the beer, yup they don’t let you leave anything
behind here the glasses are so small you’re expected to drink it all thank you the atmosphere here is timeless and the
Kölsch is perhaps As Good As It Gets it’s another place to look up as part of the local
experience yeah and you get another and another and another it’s a spot to enjoy with some
friends if you had any okay well folks there you have it Cologne yet another city ticked
off the list and one that truly knows how to enjoy life and Kölsch being a big part of
that there are Kölsch connoisseur or just looking for a good time I can honestly tell
you that Cologne is a must visit experience
