hi and welcome back to bike speeds this week we’re going to restore this lovely 1980 rally winner you can tell straight away the bike isn’t in good condition at all it’s clearly been neglected and needs a mega overhaul which is the plan for this video but this bike I could tell Underneath It All was a very very good base level to work from to get a really nice restoration we’re going to do everything on this bike wheel bearings hub bearings bearings bottom bracket bearings headset bearings new chain new cabling handlebar tape saddle stickers the whole nine yards we’re going to do on this bike we’re going to absolutely make this one pop I was actually very very pleased with the result of this bike and when we did the before and afters couldn’t quite believe the difference it’s amazing what you can do with some of these old bikes so the first task is to strip the bike down weigh out what we need in order to restore this one in this case we were straight online to order stickers Saddles B tape some other little odds and ends to really get this one as nice as we could without repainting it this was a nice restoration without it being over restored we didn’t want a bike that was Factory new we wanted a bike that looked new but was used so we’re going to clean all these components up you can see here the rear deria how greasy and grimy that is but that’s great for restoration because underneath that there’s good good Chrome and we can really tidy this one up same with the front deria initially I take the parts off that I’m going to clean up but in this instance everything came off the frame so off comes that front deria we’ll make sure we don’t lose any of those little components again you can see underneath there’s a little bit of chroming showing through a lot of grease a lot of debris we can clean all that up and it will come up like new out come the old cables you can see with those how they’re kinked and twisted theyve set to the shape that they were in so a nice fresh Cable in there will make that operate nicely and everything will really look shiny as well so that’s all the gearing off now we’re going to take the chains set off so start off by breaking off the pedals while it’s on the bike it’s a little bit easier for me to do that so we just break off the pedals they’ll come off we’ll clean those up along the way as well you can see G they’re tarnished off but they’re not Rusty everything is there the reflectors are all there we’re going to really make those stand out off comes the little caps the little bolts in the center of the chain set we’ll undo those and then we’ll also remove the chain set we’re also going to take out the bottom bracket bearings on this one again the Chrome is reflecting through but it’s just grease dirt and Dey on this bike it was amazing what came under those dirty Parts how they cleaned up and how nice it all became I’m also going to polish some of these parts which you’ll see along the way we’ll show you a before and after on this pedal arm which you’ll be amazed to see when it comes through out come the bearings fortunately for me everything came off everything unlocked nothing was seized we were so fortunate with the way this bike came apart even this cup which can often be very very hard to remove on some bikes even that came undone and came out for us but again you can see there how the grease is aged dried out thicker grimier it’s just not operating as it should so we’ll make sure that when we put our fresh greases in there everything will work right easier for me to take the pads off while it’s on the bike so I’m just going to take the pads off of the caliper there before we release that cable and remove that one we’re not using any of these cables again so it doesn’t matter about cutting them or getting them off the bike how we get them off they’re all going to be replaced when we put the bike back together so off comes the brake there front brake the same undo all the little components break off the cable get it off the frame ready for clean you can see how dirty and black that is where the road wheel has gone around so this bike has been well used in its time in its prime no doubt you can see how black that is but again underneath that you can see the aluminum how clean that all is and how that will clean up next up we’re going to take off the brake cables you can see here how they’ve broken up on the outers so their life extinct will remove those get rid of those but that little black end cap by my fingers there very very important not to lose that they’re very hard and tricky to get hold of so we want to make sure that we Salvage that and reuse that that sits in the brake lever itself nicely off comes the handlebar tape this is the old plastic type of handlebar tape we’re actually going to replace that with a nice canvas handlebar tape and the brake Leever itself is tarnished off we’re going also address that issue with this one off come the handlebars next give that little tap on the quill there and that will release the handlebars so they come off the frame this actually had a seller Royale saddle on this bike but it was quite scuffed and messy so we actually replaced that with a New Old Stock one not quite identical but certainly the same make so we were quite happy with the saddle which you’ll see further down the video now I’m going to take apart the rear deria we’re going to get all that through the AL Sonic Cleaner again you’ll be amazed how that comes up so we laying the components into the ultronic cleaner that we want to go through some parts we washed off some parts we put through here you can see here as that switched on how that draws the dirt out of these components you can see how that cloud of Blackness comes across that’s all the oils and greases being washed out of the component with the ult sonic wave that goes through them and then I can just wash those through with warm soapy water and one of our nice detailing brushes there these parts they came up amazingly well always a pleasure to do these old Chrome part type bikes rather than the modern bikes this kind of metal work always comes up like new and it’s really amazing the difference you can make just by cleaning one of these old bikes really really staggering but we’re going to go the extra mile with this one not only are we going to clean it we’re also going to polish this aluminum to really bring it back up I didn’t over polish these I could actually polish these to the point where they were like glass they would literally reflect so much I didn’t want to over poolish them so you can see there the one on the right has been nicely polished without removing all the scuffs and scratches compared to the one on the left it will pick up the light reflect nicer and the part would look like new rather than an over polished part that’s been over restored so to me this was all about sympathetic polishing and restoration you can see again the one on the left there has been polished the one on the right is as it came off the bike just a subtle difference that will reflect the light make the bike look like new again and you can see here with this pedal arm I actually just put a little bit of masking tape around that Midway so you can see the difference in the two types of finish there so on the right my nice reasonable polished surface and on the left there the tarnished off how it’s oxidized and once we polish that it also look the same makes the world a difference and even with these calipers when you start putting them back together I’m putting on the brake pads there and I’m also going to replace these little components the adjusters and the pinch bolt with new ones these are readily available I stock these in the shop so you can still get those two little Parts by replacing them give that lovely reflective new look to the part that really does set it aside from just cleaning and polishing so I’m very very happy with the way those brake calipers came together and also now with this rear deria these components they last forever they just don’t wear out these old bikes they are so nice really to work on it’s a great shame that this kind of engineering has has gone by the wayside a little bit just using a little bit of a locktite on there to stop that pivot ever coming undone we do sell that on our website the same with the syringes a lot of the components we use on the videos we actually sell it’s our own website they are our own products we sell them in the shop and you can buy them online from us and it’s a great way of supporting the channel it’s one of our main ways of financing the channel for the YouTube so if you could just pop over to our website when you’re next restoring your bike we may have the product that will help you do that and you may have seen it on our videos so we’re using a little bit of our premium grease here on the spring of that deria that will stop that rusting and then our general purpose oil with that little Needle on the end there to help apply that to the pivot Points of the deras again you can see here doing the same thing and then we’re also going to use a little bit of copper grease on the threads of the adjuster that will just stop it sticking in that aluminum and also make it a little bit easier to operate in the future and the pivot of the brake itself also lubricate and that to make sure that brake is absolutely perfect even the brake levers themselves no harm in lubricating those with our general purpose oil and now we’re going to deal with the rear hub I cannot tell you how pleased I was with this rear hub I was so pleased with that you’ll hear it further down the video we can break off the cogs on these free hubs a bit like you would with a cassette and that will leave us the actual freehub in the center on the wheel and then I can undo that with the spline remover so that comes off the wheel and then we will address the cogs by putting those through Sonic cleaner and we’ll deal with the bearings inside the free Hub itself this was the money shop for me I always always and pleased when this unlocks these free hubs they are readily available still but if you’re doing a restoration there’s no harm in taking it apart and actually putting your own bearings back in and Rel lubricating it regreasing it getting it nice without the expense of replacing so that’s what we’re doing here we’re actually taking this apart we’re going to replace all the bearings in this one we’re going to clean the pores and the springs and rubricate everything nicely so it will have its original block on the back of this wheel we remove the spacers I’ll also now remove the PS and the Springs there there’s actually only two in this wheel more modern Wheels have a lot more but in this instance it’s just the two one each side and again I’ll pop those through the O Sonic Cleaner run them through there get them nice and clean wash them down and then we can start the bearing process now we’re wash them down so they’ve been through now and you can see no wear on those barely no wear at all the bike got dirty at some point but it hasn’t done the mileage so this will work perfectly for this bike moving forwards and these they’ve got hundreds if not thousands of miles left in them so very very rewarding I’m always nervous when we try and break one of these off when we’re doing it on camera some do come apart and in some cases they just do not come apart so Age and and everything else will stop actually ever coming apart but I’m always very pleased when they do come apart especially when we’re filming one like this so I’m putting a new ball bearings into this one I’ve premium grease around that ball race that will hold the ball bearings Against Gravity so that they don’t fall out again when you’re putting these sort of things together you want a nice grease premium grease like we’re using here to make sure that everything’s held in its place and we’ll then go back together nicely so I’ll just put an extra little row around the top to hold those to stop them falling in any way as I’m doing them next up I’m using the Shimano freehub Grease the very grease for this job we sell that on our website as well so like I was saying lot of your restoration products we do have on our website some things which you may not see on other websites it’s always worth giving us a look we’ll put the link in the description below for the website so I’m just putting in those por Springs there and the pors themselves you can see all of this looks like brand new it looks like it’s literally just left the factory and I’m just using a little bit of copper grease to help the final cogs on there to stop them sort of sticking as I put them on and that will help everything go back together when we do put it back together so again a little bit of the Hub grease around the splines there that catch the paws a little bit of our premium grease on the race ready for the new ball bearings on the outer race there so Ino the new ball bearings quite a few as you can see it’s uh very time consuming you just have to be very patient when you’re putting something like this back together we put the same amount of ball bearings in is what came out and again I’m going to layer a little layer around over the top of those to hold those as everything goes back together spacer back in off goes the top over the bottom and then that lock ring which you can see absolutely Glides on there and we can just lock that off so quite we leing to see that all go back together and now we’re going to deal with the wheel we’re going to get the axle out which is what we’re doing here there’s a few lock rings and various lock nuts and adjusters so we’ll take those off first there’s also that little washer that came off there has a little Groove in it that sits in the groove of the rather a tab in it that sits in the groove of the axle to allow the adjustment when you come to that stage and we’ll just pop out everything on this one so out comes the dust covers and then we can clean up that Hub with a little bit of Degreaser I’m using a brass bristle brush there that’s quite soft it’s softer than the metal that we’re cleaning so it won’t damage it and it will help clean all that debris out now when I wipe this down with a microfiber towel this to me is the telling point I can see that Hub has come up beautifully so I know the rest of the world is going to come up really nice and now I’m just using a little bit of wire wool there’s a little bit of surface rust on the rim itself and as we know with these older rims they do go Rusty but we can really clean that up nicely with a little bit of wire firewall and get right through that rust back to the Chrome that is left on the wheel and in the case of this wheel you can even see those spokes it came up amazing this whole bike as I was doing it everything was going nicely and everything was cleaning up nicely and the before and afters when you see those are absolutely amazing I was so pleased with the way this bike came up I mean look at the reflection on that Chrome on the rim there by myself it’s just amazing how this wheel came up the whole bike was just a pleasure to do from start to finish we’ve got the new bearings in there we’re going to put the cones back in everything now is absolutely spot on there for the bearings The Hub was turning nicely locked them off done our adjustments I’m just using a little bit of our copper grease there again copper grease is great on all the threads before we put a new spoke protector onto the wheel there the original spacer before the freehub goes back on so that now goes back on I’ll torque that up to the correct specification so that’s now tored up a little bit of general purpose grease much like I would with any Hub with a cassette treat this the same way so if I ever have to take that apart hopefully they wouldn’t have bonded together or corroded it should then come apart again in the future when it next needs to be serviced little bit of copper grease there on the final locking cogs as they go onto that free Hub so we just lock those off and that free Hub is now done wheel’s now looking great the next thing for me to do on this wheel is to replace the tire these are tan wall tires we’re going to replace those like for like but we’re going to put fresh tires on this we don’t know the age of this rubber I would well imagine it’s the same age as the bike so it would have gone hard you can see there’s a little bit of flaking around me so it was actually perishing so this did need a new tire so in goes the tire brand new tube again rubber tube so we want to make sure that we’ve got fresh rubber in there now I’m going to pump that tire up even adding new washers and valve caps all added to the restored pop of these Wells they were like glass which I was super happy with next up with the wheel I’m going to adjust the spoke tensions to make sure that the wheel is nice and true and also the tensions of those spokes are correct you can see the graphs on the left hand side this is how the wheel came in visual representation there of where the tensions were on that wheel and how they are now much even tension around the wheel nice and true did this with the front wheel as well and everything was perfect there next up we’re going to get the forks off and the headset bearing out and replace the bearings on the forks themselves so you can see the old bearings are very very dry the grease is thickened up so we’re going to actually replace these I’m going to discard these ball bearings in the cages and I’m actually going to put loose balls onto these races and put the forks back with loose balls because I feel they support the headset bearing a little bit more and you don’t get the little grooves so quickly that you can get with eras and bearings so first of all I clean up all the cups so that’s what I’m doing here again I’m just using a little bit of our wire wall clean those off with the microfiber towel you can see again the actions there what a huge difference we’re making just with these little processes premium grease around the races themselves new ball bearings in and again you can see I’m not using the cages to hold those bearings so there’s more W bearings supporting the headset bearing which means that you won’t get so many grooves on the outer races and will do the same top end bottom with that so gain premium grease and go the new bearings using tweezers there just so that we can get them settled nicely onto that race and I’m quite happy there and we can actually now put the forks back into the bike before we actually do the wash down process so Ino the forks on goes the lock ring at the top and I can now set these up get that feeling nice tightened off locked off everything there is now spot on next up I’m going to deal with the pedals these are actually in quite good condition but we couldn’t replace the bearings on these the cup on the Outer Edge was not a removable cup these pedals were actually crimped near the thread end of the pedal itself I did try to remove that crimping but I felt it was going to damage the pedal it was a sort of a oneway thing where in the factory they were crimped over after the bearings went in very difficult to replace the bearings but the pedals themselves were absolutely perfect we’ll do a spin test on this in a little while and you’ll see how free and easy they were so I did just put a little bit oil into the bearings to allow that to run back through to the forward front edge as well so that the bearings are lubricated it helps soften up the grease that is in there and now I’m going to deal with these stickers we actually replaced these stickers we got a sticker set for this bike that Winer sticker was damaged and so too was the rally sticker down the down tube this one was actually not too bad but we still replaced it anyway we had this nice new set and you can see the a there on the rally sticker it was just a shame to have done all this work without replacing these stickers the paint on this bike was in such exceptional condition so now I’m going to wash down the frame so we’re just using some soapy water there and then once we’ve washed down the frame we’ll reapply those stickers I hope you’ve enjoyed the video so far please do click like on this video it’s the easiest way to to help us with the channel and really makes a difference to the performance of the video we love hearing your old bike stories and childhood memories on similar bikes to this one so be sure to drop those in the comments as well as you can see this old paint is glossing up nicely and when it’s wet it shows us what it should look like once it’s been polished I’m going to dry this Frame down with a microfiber towel before applying the new stickers to it polish obviously leaves a residue which isn’t optimal to stick to so we sticker the bike when it’s at its driest I measured every sticker three different ways to match them as best as I could to the original it was a pretty critical point that I couldn’t redo so I put a maximum prep and I’m really glad it went smoothly next up the rally sticker down the down tube this one was just slightly different to the original but the sizing was still correct still the correct colors so once it gone on there I was very pleased with it and actually once we polished and ceramic coat of this bike this one really did stand out on the white it was a lovely lovely finish to the frame and now we’re also going to deal with this rally sticker down the down tube with the a that was originally damaged so we’ve now got a nice sticker going down this a nice winner sticker on the top tube it was the difference on this bike this was the detail that really made a huge difference to this restoration and how it presented lovely lovely finish on there next up we’re going to use our super resin polish again you can buy this on our website as long with the Ceramic spray so we’ll polish this Frame down it absolutely made this paint absolutely pop there were a few marks on this bike but it didn’t warrant a full respray restoration I think it would have actually spoiled and detracted from the originality of this bike and the Polish did take out all the surface marks we were only left with a small number of scratches in a few places I’m now buffing off that polish with a different microfiber towel this wide shot never really shows how well that paint comes up but you’ll see the level of shine throughout the rest of the video it was one of the best finishes we’ve managed to achieve on one of these vintage bikes finally I’m going to Ceramic spray this Frame this will give a little bit of gloss protection a little bit of protection against the elements so when this bike gets wet the water will literally run off this bike without sticking to it dirt and debris will also do the same it will not quite a dear to the paint in the same way which means when this bike’s cleaned in the future it will be far easier to clean because of that ceramic Co now we are actually very lucky with this bike there a very big frame but it came with this lovely frame pump that fitted from the saddle to the bottom bracket and it was a big old pump this but it did come with it so I also cleaned and ceramic sprayed that to put that back on the bike again just to make it look that little bit nicer by wiping it down bottom bracket bearings they go into our lovely premium grease again again similar process as all the other bearings we’re using tweezers to lay those into the cups a little bit grease both sides so that they’re held Against Gravity as they’re put together and a little bit of copper grease on the thread of the bottom bracket itself that will help not only the bottom bracket to be put together but also for it to be took apart again in the future for future servicing the next person to ever take this cup out will thank me for this because it will come out just as easy as it did for us when we actually restored this bike so the two bearing cups are in there now with the bearings in them we can now adjust that up to get that absolutely perfect put on the lock ring that will stop that coming undone and will give us our final set position and then I’m going to use a little bit of general purpose grease on the spline of the bottom bracket itself for putting the chain set on there again that will help it come apart in the future torque that off one of the very few bolts I actually needed to torque on this bike most of these type of bikes I tend to do by F because they are nuts and bolts and not quite as critically important to get the torque wrench setting correct as a more modern bike with carbon fibers that you can crush and break and damage very very easily bike like this I tend to do by feel as I put it together I also lined up the little Groove in that cover on the bolt itself just to make sure everything aligned put the pedals on got everything there correct you can see what a massive difference this bike is really beginning to show now it’s really beginning to show the Reflections in the blue paint the Reflections in the aluminum and chrome parts that we’ve cleaned up just massive look look at these pedals now bearing in mind we didn’t put new bearings in here but we have lubricated them look at the spin on those it is amazing you you can’t fault that pedal as having plenty of miles left in it but look at this you do not get this with modern seal pairings do you look at the spin on that Simon actually commented to me when we were playing this video back that he actually cut this shot short because it just carried on spinning and he said it was just taking forever so he actually cut the shot short so that we kept the pace of the video going but that bottom bracket is absolutely ready for mileage so very very pleased with that look at the reflection again on that deria you can see how nice everything’s coming up on goes the old style friction shifter now that just pinches against itself around the frame rear brake going on now very happy with how that polished up all the replacement gloss Parts on there also look great same with the the front going on now now the stem I also buff that off camera we actually filmed this over several weeks this bike this has been one of the biggest bike Restorations we’ve decided to film so um this one was quite quite time consuming Simon has put in many many hours to bring you this video so I do hope you’re enjoying it on go the break levers now they weren’t quite aligned when they came in but we did actually make sure that they were the correct Heights both sides when we put them back on so they’re back on now we can start dealing with the cabling in this instance we’re using our super slick cables these are stainless steel cables last forever very tightly wound very smooth and soft to the touch when you run them through your fingers we do gear and brake cables in the super slick range again we sell those they are the perfect cable for a restoration such as this they really are a nice cable we also do these in a black and a white outer as well so in this instance we’re using the whites because they complement the white on details on the bike and I just use a little cable guide there which is the same front and back to get the length the same and we’re using again super slip gear cables they’re going into the shifters at the top end there and then we’ll work those down the frame and up through the front derailer and the rear derer to make sure that it’s got all nice new cables when bike is completed even things like cables make a massive difference to your restoration that little bit more of a reflection where your old cables may have tarnished off a lot of these sort of bikes tended to have galvanized cables that would go Rusty tarnish off look horrible once you’ve done a restoration like this with new cables they’re all reflecting the light with all your parts and it’s just very very nice to see new cabling on a bike of this nature next up I’m doing the handlebar tape we’re using a New Old Stock canvas handlebar tape on this one came up very very nice very very pleased with the finish of that handlebar tape quite hard to get a hold of this kind of tape now it’s not common place but I was very very pleased with the way this finished we had enough there just to finish off the end of the handlebars without using more modern tape on the end there really really nice New Old Stock saddle going on with a new saddle clamp game not identical to the original saddle but the same sell Royale make so that was nice to see that go on I know that next Rider on this bike is going to have a lot of pleasure out riding this bike and it’s nice if they’re doing it on new saddle and B tape on goes the rear wheel I was over the moon with that rear wheel I can’t begin to tell you how pleased I was with that and then I’m going to put one of our silver silver chains on here when you get to these lower group sets where you’re looking at five six 7even eight speed a lot of the chains you buy are very very cheap but the chain that we use there is a similar quality to 9 10 11 or 12 speed chain it’s a very good chain listen to the sound of that that to me was the the bit made the bike was the way that free Hub sounded as you can see it all spins freely goes up and down the rear gears freely same with the front those deras are both super springy and actuate great brakes pull nice and hard they’ve been completely overhauled and work great with the newly Tred Wheels you can see those bearings spinning totally free in the wheels also I was just amazed with this bike I was so pleased when I saw these before and afters here look at the difference absolutely stunning it just looks like new lovely stickers lovely reflection to the paint that was why I replaced that winner sticker because of the damage break so I even lined up the rally right in on those washers at the top there to make sure that they were at the top and square chain set oh look at that amazing the reflection of the blue paint against that aluminium and chrome finishing Worlds Apart again you can see the black chain to our lovely silver silver chain that free Hub and that spoke protector everything there just makes this bike look like new so I do hope you’ve enjoyed this video we thoroughly enjoyed making it it did take us quite a bit of time please do like and comment on the video please do check out our website we’re always adding new products and really appreciate the support over there so I do hope you’ve enjoyed this video and I do hope you’ll join us again very very soon bye for now

I had a RIH in the 80’s. It was great to ride!
@2:34 the times i took one of the bloody things to the shins in the 80's .. hurt like hell !!
Super video. I am also proud owner of two Vintage Raleigh bicycles. Thank You for content.
this type of vid is like therapy for me. Love to see something of lasting value brought back into service
Macnifico 👏👏👍
Just stunning. Thank you.
The "winner" was such a horrible trick on raleigh's behalf. The very cheapest drop handlebar bike, bought by parents looking to say "you were a mistake" in the form of a mediocre christmas present
Another top quality video Lee. I have unsubscribed from all YouTube cycling channels except for yours and one other guy. Your channel has a quality that's relatable to a lot of cyclists. Keep up the great work 👍
My bike was a Canal special, my parents could not afford to buy us kids bikes etc. So i built my own bike, a 10 speed racer from parts swapped and fished out the Canal etc. The frame was a Sun with plastic Simplex Gears and 27 inch wheels and Centre pull Brakes, bring back 1975 lol.
Outstanding… Great Work!
I have been tinkering with bikes for over 50 years but I still picked up a few tips ,thanks . I have 5 road bikes ,my favourite being a circa mid 70s Doug Hartley Reynolds frame fitted with nice wheels comprising large flange Q/R hubs ,stainless spokes, super champion rims ,stronglight alloy chainset,Capag nuovo record front +rear changers,Brooks saddle ,shimano tourney brakes etc .Everything was in timewarp condition . A very lucky find . And cost me a third of the price of a cheap new bike .
Oldies are besties.
I use to put £10 a week down in my local bike shop in Nottingham,I was on a YTS £27.50 a week for 40 hours work 😂Bike cost me £175 in 1987.Best buy I ever made, fantastic bike 🚲
Where did you purchase the new stickers from?
I am in the process of restoring a vintage 1970s Falcon road bike
Your show is a priceless information source!
Beautiful job. This was my dad's bike, and its lovely to see it restored.
You do very fine work, sir.
I'm not sure what the value is in restoring something like this. When it was manufactured, it wasn't a completion quality machine.
The intro to this video is a really, really strong argument for IMMERSION CHAIN WAX! Look at all that black gunk. Typically sprayed all over the place, making a mess of everything. And God forbid the owner has to service it or worse, make a roadside rear wheel repair!
I'm fully restoring a 1984 Nishiki currently and cannot wait to wax the chain. The cleanliness of wax alone justifies the switch. No more black gunk everywhere. Chain isn't a mess, nor everything it touches. But the performance benefits justify was even more. Not really an issue on many restorations though.
Oh and get this: I measure the old chain just to see how much chain ring and cog wear to expect when I first find the chain NOT stretched to 5% (unlike a bike chain I measured last week: over 1/4" in a foot!). Then, once I took a closer look at the chain, I see it's a classic SEDIS SILVER chain! Total score! These chains were excellent back in the day, being fully nickel-plated, despite costing only about $14. I rode them a lot, but given my mileage, I was still going through chains pretty quickly. So I decided to spend and ungodly $60 on the "best" chain I could buy. It wore out even FASTER! If only I had switched to immersion wax back in the 80's. Such a fool for not doing it four decades ago!
Amazing work and a rare beauty when everything new is carbon and stealth black.
what the hack, i love when ur make him alive and keep original
can i restore like u in my home garage? 😁
Amazing job! I myself got bike with aluminium shimano exage road groupset and plan to polish it. What polishing compound did you use?
My goodness, my eyes just about popped out of my skull when I saw this beauty. This is a real top notch restoration job that has brought this lovely bike to its absolute summit. You have done an extremely commendable job on this Raleigh- it would be impossible to take it any further, unless you wanted to propose a ride to St-Peter!
I am the proud owner of a (please forgive) gorgeous Raleigh Record Ace I bought in a traditional bike shop in Cheltenham in 1984. They weren't sure of the year, but they thought it must have been between 1979 and 1982. I hesitate between stickers, and hand-painted decor. I did upgrade it quite a bit, but kept the original parts. Campy Record derailleurs, Mafac Gold centre pull brakes, very rare Suntour Superb chainset (53/39), Campy rear cassette 8sp 13/26, Brooks saddle, Campy brake levers. Brooks leather handlebar tape, MSK Plarform pedals (very comfy for long rides). It is a beauty.
Raleigh made some simply lovely bikes- it was such an iconic brand. What a shame what happened.
Thank you so much for sharing this rebuild and gabby restoration. I was truly blown away by the quality of you work- no compromise, and just the search for the ultimate in performance. You deserve all the praise that you can get. God bless.
Greetings from France.
I had one of these for a very short time from 2004 to 2007 when I sold it to a guy who put a gas engine on it. Each to their own. (I don't ride anything with motors myself.) I purchased mine used in NYC. I've been curious about this frame/bicycle because I had the bicycle at one time. It's a Raleigh obviously. Was this bicycle in mass production? I ask because the one I bought was the first one I saw with this paint scheme. So yours is only the second like it that I've seen. The color looks like that of a pro team from the past but I couldn't place the name of the team from my memory. Any comments?
Another great restoration and excellent narration too !
I think that this bike was a 1987-ish model.
The Winner from the early '80s was black over met silver.
BEAUTIFUL!! I have 2 bikes I want to restore. Windsor and Nishiki. I had started, {a very long time ago…like 30 years ago}, stripping the paint off the Windsor but never painted it….just rode it like that because the bike was very sound and gears shifted sooo smoothly! I have this thing about if it looks too good people want to steal it so I think I'm just going to keep it like that. I'm cleaning it up for my boyfriend. Today he mentioned something about going for a bike ride as we passed a bike trail. I've been trying to get him to go riding for the 26 years we've been together!! So guess what I did as soon as we got home. Drug the Windsor out , flipped it upside down and assessed what it needed. Unfortunately these bikes had been left outside for many years uncovered, {totally against my wishes because I had kept them in the garage}! I got tired of hearing him grype about them being in the way and I should get rid of them… NEGATIVE!! So to keep the peace and keep the bikes I just let him have his way. Ugh!! I've been researching what it would cost to have a bike shop go thru it just to make it safe. What they charge an hour I could probably buy a new one almost. I'm REALLY mechanical minded and good with my hands so I'll just do this myself… afterall, I put together a brand new boat trailer from Harbor Freight all by myself…..NO HELP AT ALL. I couldn't believe all the parts and itty bitty pieces in boxes but I got it together in 3 days after I got off of work. I was so proud of myself and so was my brother that would walk by every once in awhile to see how I was doing. I'd tell him, "Don't say anything…I want to do this on my own"! I even fed the electrical thru the frame instead of zip tying it like the directions said to do. Too Mickey Mouse I thought plus being exposed to the elements wasn't good.
Anyhow… long story short…I wanted to comment on what a beautiful job you did on that bike! I can appreciate the time and effort y'all did. I love anything old when it's been restored for I feel everything was made so much better back in the day!!
Thanks so much for listening to my little story.

PS…I forgot to mention that the bike I'm going to be riding is one of those fold up bikes. I got one of those because I never thought my boyfriend would ever go with me. I have an FRS and it fits in the back. Was going to take it to the beach. Now I don't have to. It IS quite different than the 12 speed Nishiki I have but oh well. It's brand new and I don't have to work on it..LOL
Not sure I would keep those pedals. dork disk or reflectors also change the seat post to something more attractive. Also I would put on some Conti tires, go with darker more modern bar tape on it. Not so original, but I'd want the bike to be the best it could be. More like resto-mod. Not attacking this tasteful build, but just got a different taste.
Great job, guys!
Great restoration 😎
Just found this channel and I am amazed what a awesome job on that bike.
I am interested in why you don’t use a frame saver spray on the inside of steel frames. In rainy locations, it ensures longevity!
Yes, old bikes.
What is the size and make of your ultrasonic cleaner? I'm looking into getting one .
Are the new replacement chains pre-lubricated? Great channel btw 👍
something about Raleigh!
do you sell these?
Love your bikes you can go for a great ride or put them on your wall like a picture to admire them ❤
My first road bike was a 1978 Monark 10. This video brought me right back to it. What style this era of bike has!
так сзади восьмерка
This brought back great memories for me. My first racer was a Winner and I bloody loved that bike.
How did you source the stickers? Did you go the custom route, or an online shop?
great vid as always, do you use anything special to clean your microfiber towels?
A Raleigh Winner was my first road bike. Happy memories
