Sir Keir Starmer says half a million more pupils will qualify for free school meals when the criteria is extended so that children from all families receiving Universal Credit qualify.
But the prime minister avoided questions on the two-child benefit cap, claiming today’s announcement is a “statement of intent”, which will improve children’s attainment and save parents £500 a year.
He added: “I would see it as part of a wider package, because we’ve already done work on childcare, breakfast clubs, and school uniforms. So it’s about the children, giving them the best possible start in life.”

uh this is um a statement of intent um it’s something that we’ve been wanting to do for a long time it’s the first time it’s ever been done so free school meals for 500,000 extra children that’s fantastic in terms of them and their attainment it’s fantastic for their parents because it saves about £500 i would see it as part of a wider package because we’ve already um done work on child care on breakfast clubs on school uniforms so it’s about a tin of children giving them the best possible start in life it’s also uh centrally a cost of living issue for their parents i heard the word intent intent to go further and lift the cap i would say this is a down payment on child poverty we’ve got a task force it’ll come out with a strategy i want to get to the root causes of child poverty one of the greatest things the last government did was to drive down child poverty i’m determined we will do that today is a down payment on that but it’s also goes as I say with breakfast clubs already being rolled out with child care provision which we’re rolling out and of course school uniforms which can be really expensive for parents so it needs to be seen within that group of measures but yes it’s a down payment on what I want to do uh in relation to child poverty just one

When it comes to universal credit, it’s means tested and they go after genuinely deserving people to stop them claiming universal credit. Who the hell decided on those benefits to start with. On one hand they encourage people to claim, then on the other, they accuse them of fraud and stop the entitlement.
All UK school meals are halal.
Parents and no one else should need goverment handouts what we need and always have is decent pay, your pay system is not fit for purpose if your wages have to be toped up with taxes.
