Installed wireless SRAM AXS Shifting – no cables, clean cockpit. The wireless, electronic 12-speed drive train from SRAM is seriously impressive. It’s a standout in the industry when it comes to functionality and tech.
The AXS derailleur isn’t just a pretty piece of engineering — it’s smart too. It sits further inboard and is 10mm shorter than a mechanical derailleur, which gives you a bit more clearance from rocks and roots out on the trail.
I love this!

It was due to a by chance reading of the website’s comments section that I stumbled on a familiar name in the blog listing, Barry van Jaarsveld, whom I had known many moons earlier from the Western Province triathlon scene of the 1980s/1990s. Barry had left SA many years previously to study chiropractic in the USA before settling in the Netherlands, and we had a few mutual friends. When I emailed him to re-connect and ask if he would be interested in being interviewed, he kindly obliged and set the wheels in motion for what turned out to be an almost two year “Where Are They Now” themed series of interviews with former South African triathlon and cycling greats. ( Jason Bailey )
My name is Barry van Jaarsveld and I am a ex- elite triathlete. In 1989 I was included in the South African Invitation Triathlon team.
Currently i am racing the Sforz MTB Cup in the NL and Germany. I finished in 4th place in my age-group in 2017 and 2018 – 50+
In real life i am a chiropractor.
[Music] hey everyone and welcome back to the channel It’s taken a little while but I finally made a switch to ShraMM’s wireless setup I’m now running the X01 AXS derailer paired with a GX AX shifter Now actually I’ve always had issues with the traditional shifters where you use your thumb because I use his thumb a whole lot for my work and I got some pain in this joint over here That’s why I was already a big fan of Stram’s updated grip shift Honestly I had zero issues with it which was a pleasant surprise considering I first used grip shift way back in 1995 on a Gary Fisher mountain bike And I have and I had so many problems with that Um it was a problem system for me Um and when I had the possibility to get the new grip shift uh the updated version I had my doubts but I thought I’ll take a dive in the D pen and try it again And it’s worked perfectly and really is fantastic So why the jump to electronic if grip shift worked so well And it did Mainly everyone around me seems to be using it And let’s be honest it does look really slick Plus once you go electronic I think there’s no turning back For me the best part of the whole electronic shifting is the fact that your front end looks so clean and sleek Um less cables Um actually I took all the stuff off um the grip shift the cable that runs through the frame the rear derailer and weighed that And that whole package was heavier than the package of uh the derailer and the shifter So also a weight reduction on my bike which is very very cool But uh I’m not a weight so that wasn’t a big thing Basically the electronic shifting thing is I rode a couple of circles in a parking lot and subsequently my riding mates uh all had it and it’s just something it’s like buying a new pair of deep section wigglesfield race bike at some stage Everyone has that and it’s just a question of time if you have the budget for it It’s just a question of time for you uh to to do that as well I mean we don’t want to be faster We don’t want to be the fastest We don’t want to win races at some stage That’s all bygon bons Um but it’s nice to have this these kind of things And I mean it’s a hobby right A hobby can cost a bit of bucks That’s how I see it Let’s talk about the derailer and shifter setup The wireless electronic 12speed drivetrain from Stram is seriously impressive Is a standout in the industry when it comes to functionality and tech The AXS derailer isn’t just a pretty piece of engineering It’s smart too It sits further inboard and is 10 mm shorter than it mechanical derailer which gives you a bit more clearance from rocks and roots out on the trail What does that mean for you and me Instant reliable effortless shifting Tapping the shifter feels like working with a mouse of the computer Smooth and responsive And here’s the cool part The derailer is built with Stram’s overload clutch That means if you take a hit from the outside if you fall the motor gearbox disengages allowing it to move freely and then instantly snap back into place It’s seamless and protective Plus the whole system is reasonably waterproof and dust resistant Perfect for creek crossings mud and even pressure washing after a filthy ride I have obviously not taken any chances cycling through creeks and river beds with my new derailer but that will come I’ve seen my riding buddies do that with no problems So it’s just a question of uh having spent the money Uh I don’t want to break it but it really can handle that kind of stuff So I will be doing it soon and I’ll try and give you some feedback in the next couple of videos on how that goes I’ve seen a video where a guy throws water over it so I’m sure it’s fine and uh it’s just a question of having to do it and having faith that it’s going to be okay Let’s look at the shifter As for the GX Eagle AXS rocket pedal they call it I’m just going to call it the shifter It’s been redesigned to feel more like a traditional shifter where you can use a thumb Uh the one I complained about earlier which hurt my thumb but once again this is like using a mouse of a computer It’s super easy Um it feels more like a traditional shifter subsequently So if you’re new to electronic shifting the transition is really intuitive and thanks to the AXS app you can customize the button functions however you like Total control totally yours So when I first started using the shifters I had a problem with the inside of my hand hitting the shifter the downshift over here So what I did then is I moved the shifter from the outside of the brake attachment to the handlebar to the inside and that solved the problem What I use now is shifting up shifting down up down up down So I hardly ever use this one Up down up down So they have two options which is excellent Is it worth it Do you need it If you’ve got the budget it’s hard to beat the performance and the clean minimalist cockpit The cockpit looks really fantastic But if money if money’s tight it’s definitely not essential Still if you do take the plunge I doubt you regret it I’ve been riding around for years with a grip shift and I’ve been totally happy It is more peer pressure It’s more seeing what the other guys have It’s more thinking do I need it Don’t I need it What should I do And at some stage I just thought well I have the budget I’m going to take the plunge And uh I have not regretted it since the first day I had to get used to the gears in the beginning how to use them Um not the shifting but the I had a couple of problems with the shifter figuring out which ones to use I told you about my hand um hitting the downshift and uh took that took a while maybe five to 10 rides to really figure out where I wanted once I but once I moved the shifter across the brake attachment I have more space and gives you a second option of how to shift and that made it perfect Please let me know in the comments what your setup looks like and if you’re thinking of making the switch Thanks for watching and don’t forget to like and subscribe for more Thanks guys Cheers

That is seriously super pretty. How does it work in "real life"?
This is nice stuff, K&S Cycling | From Dirt to Tarmac. Deserves more reach. Someone here in the comments mentioned a website that can help with that.
