The Queens, as it’s colloquially known in Maltby, Rotherham, has a history dating back over 100 years, and is closely associated with the mining and nearby racecourse history.
maltby once known as the queen of villages is a small town in South Yorkshire it didn’t really develop as a town until the sinking of Maltby main collery by 1908 with the sinking of the collery came the development of several establishments and places around here such as the model village and of course several pubs that includes the one we’re at today the Queen’s Hotel this is a great place to grab a bite to eat with friends or a couple drinks but it also has a fascinating history let’s take a look inside shall we [Music] the queen in question is believed to be Queen Mary as it was opened in 1923 as a place for Doncaster racegoers 1923 though was quite a sad year for Malby as an explosion at the collery killed 27 men nevertheless the town suffered but moved on and with the development of the community came the development of places within the community such as pubs this one was built on some unused land at a place called Four Lanes End and was part of a chain of hotels owned by John Smith Brewery the original owners were Mr and Mrs farnsworth before it was taken over in 1925 by Oan V pike it was actually named Mr pint when it became a nightclub in 2002 in his honor speaking of which this pub has actually seen quite a few surprising changes in its life when you come in you’ll notice that there’s two doors now the one on the left which leads to where we are now has always been a pub but the one on the right led in the 80s to a concert hall this later became a snooker hall and then finally in the ‘9s it became a function room however the whole pub started to fall into disrepair until it was refurbished by Weatherspoons in 2012 a lot of the decor in here actually alludes to Maltis heritage as well take the carpet for example that has the chemical composition of coal on it and also the winding gear of a collery then there’s the sculpture dedicated to Freddy Truman the famous cricketer who was born in Staint near here and actually took the bus from the stop near here as well it was unveiled in 2019 was created by David Webster and is made completely of bicycle chain maltby has a lot of history that you can still explore take the nearby ruins of Roach Aabi for example or the earliest site of Christian worship in all of Rotheram St bart’s Church whether you’re here to experience Maltb story or just want to grab a bite to eat or something to drink the Queen’s Hotel is the place for you
