An Alpine crossing, or Transalp, is the crossing of the Alps by bike from the northern edge of the Alps, for example from Germany, Switzerland, or Austria, to the southern side, often crossing into Italy. This involves crossing several mountain passes, often over several days and, depending on the route chosen, either on roads, cycle paths, gravel tracks, trails, or even carrying the load. In my view, an Alpine crossing is less a set path than an adventure. This means that each route we present is unique. Each crossing you undertake is a personal challenge, whether physical, mental, scenic, or due to the weather. This also means that the routes in this video are only suggestions. Feel free to create your own routes. I’ve already created a video about this, which I ‘ll link to at the very end. Whether it’s Munich, Gamisch, Obersdorf, Freiburg, or wherever you want to start, there are numerous options, but in this video we’ll break it down into some very popular possibilities, starting with the easy routes for beginners. If you want to cross the Alps for the first time and don’t want to tackle the toughest trails right away, then the Via Claudia Augusta is a great option for you. This is the classic beginner’s tour, although I ‘ve only ridden parts of it myself so far. You’ll cycle along old Roman roads from Donauwörth, for example, Füssen or Gamisch, over the Fernpass, the Reschenpass, past the sunken church tower, to near Venice or, as most people do, to Lake Garda. You’ll mostly be on bike paths or quiet roads. The Alpe Adria or the Munich-Venice cycle path could also be good options. The great thing about all of these tours: moderate gradients, good infrastructure, even for e-bikes, but of course, you’ll be less exposed to nature. There are also many companies that will transport your luggage. This naturally reduces the weight on the bike and simply creates comfort. I’ll tell you about some companies and GPS tracks in the video. The route continues on asphalt. After all, this is the option of least resistance, but depending on the undulating route, a road bike cross-Alpine route can of course be very demanding. The good thing about it: You can easily plan your route using various apps, even Google Maps, and the road infrastructure in various regions is very good. However, you will sometimes have to put up with busy roads and even tunnels. And that’s where a spectacular cross-Alpine route comes into play: the Route de Grand Alpes, a total of 700 kilometers from Gämfersee to Nitzer. You’ll cross many very, very well-known Tour de France passes like the Col de Galibier and the highest road pass in the Alps, the Col de Lyseran. By the way, for exciting inspiration with good facts and figures, or simply as a gift for cycling enthusiasts, I highly recommend the bicycle book by Mamotamaps from Hamburg. The team does outstanding research and design work. The Alpine maps in the background of my videos are also from MAMOTAMAPS. I’ve included the book and map directly in the description with the first link below. To make your road bike crossing even more challenging, you can of course also tackle a long-distance route or an Alpine crossing with a time limit, for example, in 24 hours. I personally found the goal of completing an Alpine crossing from Munich to the Mediterranean in 24 hours extremely exciting. We set off in Munich in the afternoon, rolled past the Silvenstein reservoir in Achensee to the Inn Valley, then fought our way over the Brenner Pass to Italy and the next morning over breathtaking Dolomite passes. After just under a day of cycling and 450 kilometers, we arrived in the lagoon city of Venice. An experience I still dream about sometimes. Of course, very good equipment, good lighting, solid meal planning and physical preparation are all important. I have linked my video about the 24-hour Alpine crossing, in which I also explain my equipment , and I have admitted it. It is a real challenge and certainly harder than the various ideas that will appear in this video, but it suited the road bike Alpine crossing well. Let’s leave the asphalt now and move on to gravel. But it is not that easy to plan a really good gravel route across the Alps , because when the road gets steep and there are roots and big stones off the road, the gravel bike quickly reaches its limits. It is not for nothing that, in addition to gravel bikes, there are also mountain bikes with suspension, which, based on their name alone, are more suited to the Alps. But one route that I stumbled across and found very exciting was described by Sarah Hallbauer on bikepackers. De published, from Bad Hölz ​​along the Isarrade via Läutasch, the Timmelsjoch, the Gampen Pass and the Selva Piana climb to the Brenta Dolomites, passing Molveno, which is also a place of longing for me, all the way to Lake Garda. I’ll link you to this gravel route, as well as many other providers of Alpine cross-country tours, in a summary blog article. You can find the article using the second link in the description. And now we come to what is certainly the core idea of ​​an Alpine cross-country tour : the mountain bike Transalp. Literally over hill and dale, far away from villages, right through the natural scenery. And honestly: Of all the previous options, I still see this as the most appealing. I have numerous memories of being in the middle of nowhere with Basti, riding through the rain, with wild horses around us, crossing national borders next to military sites. It’s simply special and will become part of my personal history. I’d like to suggest three route options for this ultimate adventure . One is our previous Alpine crossing from Munich to Lake Garda, past Lake Tegernsee, through the Valleb into the Zillertal, over the Fundererjoch and the Fitscherjoch to the Dolomites, and then through the Edge Valley to Lake Garda. The video is linked above. Unforgettable. Alternatively, there’s the very popular Albrecht Route, which I rode with Basti last year, from Gamisch to Lake Garda in seven days, past the Heilbronner Hut and the Heidelberger Hut, and into Scuol, Switzerland. Via Bormio, we then take the Epic Trail to the Tremalzo Pass, and at the end, we’re back at Lake Garda. Ideal for those looking for a rideable Alpine crossing with only a few pushing and carrying sections, and no extreme trails. Furthermore, this route, like many others, is offered by some providers with luggage transport. This naturally offers a lot of comfort, with hot showers, fresh towels, and fresh bedding. But this is precisely where the idea and my wish for my next Alpine crossing originated: I’d like to spend the night in mountain huts and ride a very special route, the Heckmaia, the Hechtmaier Route. This would include really tough trails, carrying and pushing sections, and the mere thought of waking up to the sunrise in a mountain hut like the Nuvulao is very appealing.
