Day 4

Bernburg – Lutherstadt Wittenberg

Encounters with people shape a tour more deeply than wonderful landscapes or architecture. Chance brought me together with Adrian and Alan in Wittenberg. The two Scots are essentially doing my tour in reverse. Their destination is Münster, they know where it’s nice…

In the afternoon, they arrived at Marina Camp Elbe at the same time as me. The facility is quite decent, but the price of €27 doesn’t live up to it. Regardless, the evening with Adrian and Alan at Pizzeria Il Castello was as entertaining as it was informative. Bikepacking through Scotland is now higher than ever on my bucket list.

Soon east of Bernburg, a group of children were advertising their products so well that I had to stop to buy a cup of “homemade” lemonade from the street vendors. Very fruity and delicious. They had set up their stand right by the Wulfen town sign. They loudly offered their wares, waved posters, and had a lot of fun and great success.

Dessau is worth a visit. Wonderful bike paths all around. The Elbe River, the Gropius Houses. Wörlitz, with its park, is not without reason a popular destination.

After that, the Elbe Cycle Path runs for kilometers along the Elbe dikes. Not quite as varied, but easy to cycle.

Day 5

Lutherstadt Wittenberg – Potsdam

A day of celebration for the cyclist: miles of forests, sunshine, and a tranquility rarely experienced elsewhere in Germany. In places, Brandenburg, with its sandy soil and pine trees, is reminiscent of stretches along the Dutch North Sea coast or the coasts of southwest France. Fantastic. I reached beautiful Potsdam in the early afternoon. A quick shower, set up the tent, and then strolled through the city.
