What does a million steps look like?
Walking parts of the north side of the Mediterranean from Llafranc, Spain, to Portovenere, Italy.
I said a couple months ago that there aren’t nearly enough travel videos using heavy background music, so this video is the beginning of making up for the internet’s shortcomings. As soon as I heard this tune, I knew I was going to use it for a travel video. Check out pg.lost. The song is “Oscillate.” There are no added effects to what you are hearing, other than a bit of background sound from the video clips themselves.
Oscillate fit the idea of our travels perfectly (in my mind, not everyone’s…) in that we are not just holidaying, we are working. Not a job, but in a way to add more meaning to our experiences. We walked a tonne on this trip, a lot of days well over 30,000 steps, and by the end had walked a thousand kilometres. We walked to and from places. Up and down mountains (bear with me, I’m from the prairies). Across cities and country boundaries. The effort we put into the journey, into arriving at the destination made that arrival all the more powerful. As I watched us take those steps I began to hear this song in my head, and it became the soundtrack to those hiking days. Although, when it came time to edit the video, the 10/4 (?) time signature was tricky to coordinate with the onscreen action but I think I figured it out in a way that works.
I spend a lot of time on little details that won’t matter to many people, but they matter to me because I’m a details person. If you notice some of those fun little things, let me know. And good for you.
The bulk of the video was taken along the Costa Brava between Llafranc and Begur; along the Cote d’Azur between St. Paul de Vence, France, and the Italian border; between the towns of Dolceacqua, Perinaldo, Apricale, and Isolabona, Italy (plus bonus cycling video just west of Sanremo); Rapallo and the Portofino peninsula; and the Cinque Terre. Other places making cameo appearances include Girona, Spain; Carcassone, Pont du Gard, and the Avignon area in France; Rome, Orvieto, Porto Maurizio, Genoa, and Bomarzo, Italy.
