In this video I will be sharing how I transformed a BMC Roadmachine 01 Two (an endurance bike) into a lightweight race bike. I’ll be discussing the geometry advantages and the specific upgrades that enabled me to shave off close to 1/2 a kilo. This BMC Roadmachine comes stock with Shimano Dura Ace and some DT wheels.

The bike we need instead of want
Cam- so happy to see this. Parallel lives in some respects- I’m not racing- 50 years but still crave speed and comfort. Two years ago I bought a BMC Roadmachine 01 Four- but swapped out for the ics carbon cockpit, tubeless Conti’s, 3d Fizik Vento Adapt Saddle, and a pair of smoking Roval Rapide Clx ii wheels. Everything I need,:a faster endurance based geometry with top spec components. Nice to see others feel similar- and validates the big spend.
An endurance bike makes alot of sense for most riders like myself.I bought a Giant Propel last year with Full red and Renolds Black label 46 wheels. The giant comes with a pretty high stack. Ive been told by my riding mates that when Im in the drops I dont provide much of a draft. The propel has a pretty rigid rear end .I just put a 30 in the back tring to make it a little more comfortable.I had to shorten the cranks to 167. and I really need a narrower bar. Its just so expensive to change the parts out and Im not sure I can do it by myself.
Can you send a message to the industry that most of the bikes are unaffordable and not ultra great by price point and colour – Which I understand is for a reason. As an influencer sure you know they’re taking the actual mick with the modern bike that’s on offer, please send the message instead of dressing up their bikes cheers
Wheels and tires make a huge difference. I replaced my steel wheels on my Peugeot UO-8 touring bike with Mavic CXP-22’s with 32x700c tires. Complete game changer.
I did the math on a few endurance bikes. Even a lot of pros are running spacers because they have found it is better to get into an aero position and hold it for longer with a higher stack. With an endurance bike, you can slam the stem and have the same position without the spacers. Depending on the bike though, you may need a longer stem.
Every bike is a race bike if you push hard enough on the pedals
Cam, Do you have such things as road TTs in Aus? ie a 10 or 25miles TT but you use a road bike?
Cam great video
Did you have to get a longer stem on this Endurance bike vs the Race bike of BMC that you were initially running due to the change in reach?
No thanks. I will pass on draining my bank account for marginal cycling performance gains.
Im @ $1,650 into my endurance bike. Im eyeing dura ace di2 shifters and brakes right now right now, my 105 di2 brakes are having horrible problems and i can get the shifters for less combined with the brakes. Im also looking at swapping my rear drivetrain still which is another $600. And then i want to get some ffwd 44mm aero wheels with DT 240 hubs ($1899).
All in im looking at $4,800 in upgrades… And thats hunting leftover floor model and open box dura ace equipment.
I think the industry needs to take note, endurance geometry with race bike trimmings suits a great deal of riders.
I’d like to do the same with my new C68 Colnago frame. Not a light nor aero bike and about 15 mm higher on the front end compared to an equivalent SL8.
👍
Great video Cam, I love the descriptive breakdown of what your goals were, the way you achieved the goals and sharing more of your story my friend. Cheers
This is like how I’ve unintentionally turned my budget Canyon Endurace into 99% of an Ultimate for way more money than just buying an Ultimate and adding an unslammed shorter reach cockpit in the first place 😂
Genital Itching? Dont think thats bicycle related pal. What have you and Neil been getting upto?
Bought my BMC Roadmachine Two last year, and done about 8000K on it so far (only nice weather, I have another bike for bad weather). I really love it. The comfort on the bike is amazing. Just did a 180km 3000m elevation sportive without issues. I'm not fast (because I'm old and fat 😉) but I still get the job done.
I did get it with the carbon bar and upgraded the wheels to a custom 45mm set (1350gr). However, it's an Ultegra level bike, so it's about 7.8kg now, and I'm fine with that. It'll be cheaper to lose the 0.8kg of weight myself 🙂
I have watched upto 18 seconds and was given of a choice of Cam being a dickhead or having done the right thing. Being a long time viewer of Cam's and from his prior experience, I am going with the former . As being a dickhead myself , I can recognize the trait in others. Time to watch the rest of the video.
Back during covid, I wanted a new bike. But they were hard to find. So, I went for a custom built machine. Part of the process was was getting a fit. My gawd the numbers were totally bizarre. There is no way I could ever have found a brand that would fit and answered why I always was uncomfortable in some aspect. After getting this bike All of my #’s went up! Major changes were reach and stack.
Hi Cam, I have the same dilemma – leaning towards my Canyon Endurace instead of my Chapter 2 and Cannondale Hi Mod. I began upgrading the Endurace with a set of new Caden Decadence wheels. Great and informative video. Currently the Endurace is at 7.6kg (with pedals). What's your suggestion for the next upgrade?
Why not be both? 😂
Your SEKA Exceed was also an endurance/ aero bike light build with reasonable price!
BMC is crazy reach , no idea how anyone can ride them but they are sweet
one day all the high stack height nerds will realize that bikes come with something that you can use to adjust the stack height for free
been living in QLD for the past 2 year form Canada, people saying dickhead is the funniest thing . love the channel
I did the same thing, but I bought a $200 10 year old womans fuji…
Has anybody done aero testing comparisons for a shallower rim at the rear? Due to the turbulent air flow at the back, a deeper rim may not give as much advantage over a shallower rim in comparison to the weight savings that a shallower rim would give on a course with a lot of climbing
Been looking at my next bike with exactly the same thought process. Comfort with fast wheels and cranks for me.
