No racing for me this weekend. So, I’ve traveled down to Hampshire for the Garmin 2025 ride out. Hi, Simons viewers. Francis here. We’re on the wrong side of the road. We should probably move this way. A 20 average for the first half was a bit I was hanging as well. So, it’s like I was like, “Oh, he’s dropped. I can ease up.” [Music] [Applause] So, I first heard about this ride a few years ago now and seen plenty on social media, YouTube, etc. of people doing this each year and I thought it’s about time I came down and tried it out. It’s only an 80k ride, mainly social speed as far as I know. So, nothing too taxing today, but they get some pro riders here to do a give a talk and plenty of other YouTubers. So, I know Amy from Amy Cycle Adventures is here with Kyle, the main man. Um, Jimmy, Emily, and Francis from Cave Media here, and I’m sure there’ll be plenty of other people here. Now, it took me about 25 minutes to move forward in the starting pen to get to the start. As you can see, still a lot of people behind me. It was a bit slow going. So, I’ve absolutely battered the first half of this ride around a 90 and a half average. So, like I said, I’d pushed on early from the start, riding my way through the groups, moving myself up because I just wanted to find some decent speed riders to ride with. I even drafted this little caravan. Had to be a bit careful, must say. Sloped down for the horses and there was cattle on the road. Made my way through the groups, moving up carefully. It ain’t a race, it’s a ride. But I was so far back at the start pen. They released 20 at a time, it takes a while. But that’s fine. But I was so far back. Wasn’t anyone to ride with so gave up big rode hard. I’ve caught up to the cave media posy and the wild ones. I’ve done the exact opposite advice. Just done a 20 average for the whole ride. Yeah, that’s a mistake. No, that was the plan. I was so far back in the blue pin. I thought, “Oh, no one to ride with back there.” And Jimmy and Francis look like they’ve just caught Emily, which is a result for them. And we are nearly halfway. I’m going to need some food if I’m going to keep my legs going for this sort of speed, but we will see. And I’ve worked out how Francis does. There’s Emily. Now, Jimmy was on one of his metal frame bikes with a metal bottle in a metal cage that had a bit of a rattle. I think the cage was a little bit bent out of shape for some reason. I’m being packed by two of our dogs. [Applause] Hey, it’s too hot. What’s your name? Simon. Simon. Is this going on YouTube? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Hello, Simon’s viewers. Hello, mate. I want to talk to the camera. Hi, Simon’s viewers. Francis here. We’re on the wrong side of the road. We should probably move this way. Let’s do it. Oh, good. Easy. Easier for Francis than me with one hand and and being a lot less fit. I think you I think Simon’s doing extremely well. Extremely well. He’s also up to me on the glasses game. Look at this. Look at this. You got to keep the glasses going. It’s the important thing. Look good on the bike. Don’t be fast. Just look good. That’s exactly what I do. I think that’s what Lawrence has resorted to as well. Isn’t that now? I know. He He is secretly fast. Wow. Yeah, he is doing well. He looks good as well. Yeah, just a bit. Fit boys. After we chat with Jimmy and Francis, these lads came by and they were moving and I thought, jumping on this wheel. Good direction for the wind. Have a tail as well. Yep. Perfect. Good time, boy. He set a good pace and that saw us all the way to the halfway stop. Halfway point, food stop. Re rehydrated, refueled, precision hydration. Two packs of chews. So, 60 g of carbs in. Maybe that will save my stupid legs where I was giving up way too much. Quite a few people. K media just turned up. Went past them a while ago. as you see Francis on the uh camera and who’s heading out. Looks like Katie Cooker is handing out and Chris Hall. So maybe I’ll catch on to their group in a minute once I mount back up. But yeah, rip the first half. Not sure about the second. We will see how the legs are feeling. But uh probably take it a little bit steadier hopefully. You good? Yeah. Yeah. I’m just chugging along. I’ve had a little burst. I need to recap. Save my legs. regroup. Is it? I started way too hard. I think everyone did. It’s a bit too hot, isn’t it? It’s too hot. Yeah. For a 20 average for the first half cuz I think Never mind. That keeps going for a while. It was all right. It does keep going. It’s always hillier on the second half of these things. Yeah. That must be the heat making it harder. That ain’t that steep, is it? About 8 miles left to go. It’s nice. It’s a little bit hilly this part of the route this second half, I think. Nice. Had a ring for a few groups. I’m on my own at the moment, but it’s lovely. I have pushed a little bit too hard again and I am feeling it in my legs. They ain’t feeling the best. It’s been a funny old work week. Early starts, late finishes, long days. So sleep not as good. Little bit tired from that. But actually physically my legs are quite tired. Just gone into base training again. Restarted the plan. Building towards gravel nationals and the cross season in uh September. So we’re in a bit of base which is nice. Hopefully it’ll push my power back up again. That’s dropped a little bit over the last couple of weeks. Down to 253 now. But hopefully get a couple of base phases in which we got two blocks of base I believe now and then some build. We’ll push that back up. Really hope to be pushing 265 by time I’m at Gravel Nationals. Be a nice little figure. If I can lean up a little bit, that’ll be great. Still few more miles left to go on this G ride. Really nice. Jersey is good. I like the fit. Maybe I’ll have to look at this Attica stuff. We’ll see. Anyway, that to do. Let’s go. I caught up to another rider who was going at a fairly good pace and after sitting on and recovering for a little while, I thought I better pull through and do a bit of a turn on the front. We were going at a fair lick and it was going quite well. Overtaking some other riders as we moved through and we were nearing the end at this time. Nice one. I appreciate the time. That’s right, mate. I didn’t realize I’d dropped you off. No, no, no. It’s okay. I was I was hanging just and then I uh Well, that was two of us. We were both hanging, I think. Hey, I was hanging as well. So, I was like I was like, “Oh, he stopped. I can ease up.” Yeah. No worries. Yeah. Where you from? You local? No, I’m from Ipsswitch. All right. So, uh yeah, few hours away. Are you local or? Yeah, around around here. I’m from a little town called Lmington. Oh, okay. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. 10 miles up the road. Yeah. I know, man. So, this area is uh all your local roots. Yeah. They need to find some tarmac. I thought they need to find some tarmac down here. I thought it was bad up our way, but jeez. As bad as what it was. Jeez. It’s bad everywhere, but Yeah. I think this is this is some of the worst I’ve been on today for a while. Yeah, it is pretty bad. Yeah. Hey, job done. Job done. Are we in here? Yeah, in here. I don’t know why they’ve gone by. Maybe they’re not doing it. Got him, mate. Well done. Hey, Simon Derek. Nice to meet you, mate. Nice. Yeah, your pit. G ride out done and so am I. Today was supposed to be for me an easy solo ride. 2 and 1 half hours. That was 2 hours 45. So, not bad for time, but that was anything but easy, guys. I smashed that out way too hard on the first half for me for this week’s training. That is an over nearly a 19 average for the whole ride. 50 mi. Normalized power 198 TSS 171. So yeah, pretty spicy day for me there. I enjoyed it. I went off quite hard at the start because I was a long way back in the pens. They were releasing people every um 2 minutes, 20 people. So it takes a while to get through the number of people are here. There are influencers, ambassadors for Garmin here. They get slotted in with some groups, but they’re way further forward. And you know me, I like to mix up with the stars. So I had to get up the front and see who I could see. So pretty hard ride for 20 m averaging 20 mph to get myself up. Caught the lads from Cade Media. Um Jimmy Francis, you’ll have seen Francis on the video. Nice guys. Definitely definitely nice guys. Check out their podcast. Check out their social media. I’ll put links in the below to it. Saw some other people at the halfway stop. Had a chat to a few people. Had a chat to Kyle. Good chat to Kyle from Kyle and Amy at the start. Wished Amy well for her tour to France challenge. I’ll put a link to her channel down below so you can check that out over the summer. But yeah, good ride. I enjoyed it. Legs are a little bit tired now. Good training for the week. Very good. Now ru of the ride and the event. Event good. Jersey good. Well fitted. Well done, Adacus. You sorted this out. I’m going to check their jerseys out. Very nice. It’s £50 to enter. You get a jersey. Good. Thumbs up. You do get some nutrition. I’ve stocked up on the uh precision hydration gels, so that’s good. Um, halfway stop nutrition. Average cakes and stuff. I’m celiac. No gluten-free. Didn’t even see much labeled for vegan, which is unusual. Um, Haribo, the usual. Some precision hydration chews. I managed to get those in. Help me out. And some drink. So, stop. Midway. Stop. Five out of 10 food before and after. The usual sort of vans look quite nice food. Again, nothing for the celiac here. No gluten-free labeled up. So, didn’t bother as normal. Always prepared. Had food with me. Got the fridge in the van. So, that’s good. So, overall the route very good. Enjoyed the route. Really well thought out. Fantastic route. If you’re local, say within an hour and a half, 2 hours of the location. And I’ll put a link to my ride in my Straa so you can see all the stats and you can see the route. Then yes, definitely a ride worth coming and doing. It is a good ride and it’s not expensive in the scheme of Sport. Yeah, a little bit more cuz it’s a shorter one, but it is good and definitely if you got some mates to do it with, it’s a good one. Riding on your own, yeah, you meet some people and I did meet some people which was good. Not as many as I like, not as much group riding as I like, but it was good on the whole. And I may come again if I can persuade Ben to come or even more if I could persuade Michelle to come because to me this is a great truck going by. A great starter sporty. It’s only 50 mi. Little bit of training. She could be up to this next year and it would be perfect for her. Especially if we got in the earlier pens. It would be quite nice. You’d feel you were really part of it. If you do get do do it get to the earlier start pens definitely worth it. They don’t select you just queue up. So do get further forward. Otherwise I mean I waited 25 minutes to get away there. So a good long wait but on the whole pretty good could be a little bit better. I’ll score the sportif a 7 out of 10 because it’s not an epic route not an epic ride. No epic climbs but overall 7 out of 10. Pretty good. Thanks Garmin. I enjoyed this one. Hopefully you guys enjoyed the video. If you did, hit the like button. Also, I’m climbing up on the subs now, guys. Come on, help me out. I’m at about 820 currently when I’m recording this. I’ve only need another 180 subs. If you’re not already subscribed, and I know that 70% of you watching this are not subscribed to the channel. Do me a favor, hit the sub button, hit the notifications, because I have got quite a few videos coming out over the summer. Next weekend, I’m racing MTB. End of the month, I’m doing a gravel race. There’ll be the trip to France to watch some of the tour at the start, plus the Dunish Dynamo. All coming up. Don’t miss out. Get subscribed, follow along, and I’ll see you on the next one.

  1. Another great video! I'm more if an ultra runner than cyclist (only potter about on my bike!) but also coeliac, diagnosed a couple of years ago. Would be great if you could do a video of hiw you fuel before, during and after long rides and also if you have to focus more on hydration now than you did before? Thank you 😊

  2. Nice video. Jimmy & Emily were the founders of Atacus I believe, and sold it once the Cade Media Podcast took off. Nice avserage speed also, and you gave it us in 'real money', mph. I've never been one for km's really, must be my age I expect.🙄 My best average was on the Manchester 100 in 2018, 18.3mph over 101 miles. But I was a lot younger, i was only 68 then.😉 Looking forward to your summer videos.👍

  3. Just found your channel Simon! Like you I am a coeliac cyclist, though much older as hitting 70 later this month! I agree about lack of food for coeliacs at food stations. I did an Essex Sportive on Sunday. All the cakes etc weren’t gluten free, just bananas and gels for me 😢
