In preparation for this Giro d’Italia. It was at the Giro d’Catalunya. Here we go for this 18th stage. We’ll immediately watch carefully what happens, who will be in the breakaway, what the reaction of Lidl-Trek will be, what the reaction of Visma – Lease a Bike and the other sprint teams will be. You know he’s not stingy with his efforts. He’s going back. Mads Pedersen is Mad Mads today. And Ayuso, the struggle continues. I want to start a first debate. Will Ayuso finish the stage? The whole peloton is breaking away. I thought I saw Wout Van Aert in the first group now, Jacky. He’s the one who made the effort. We’ll see if we have several representatives from Visma – Lease a Bike, Affini was already there at first. A first break. With more than 30 riders at the front, the peloton is getting back on its feet. We’re a little over 2 kilometers from the first climb of the day. We just saw two riders leave the peloton to try to make the jump. It’s terrible. Can you hear it? Yes. There it is. Juan Ayuso has abandoned. We at UAE had anticipated this. It’s no coincidence that we had placed a vehicle in the middle of this climb. We tried, we took the start, but we suspected it was going to be tough for one of the favorites of this Giro who started three weeks ago. We have the cast, magnificent. There are 35 of them at the front: Mads Pedersen, Wout Van Aert, lots of sprinters with Kaden Groves. We also have a few French teams represented. Alessandro Verre, we heard a few minutes ago. Arnaud Gérard, the former world champion, Arnaud Gérard in the youth category. We have Stefano Oldani, the Italian, of course, from Cofidis. We have a great delegation with Dries De Bondt, Stan Dewulf, Dorian Godon and Andrea Vendrame for the Décathlon – AG2R. And Rémy Rochas, the only representative of Groupama – FDJ. They tried this morning with Enzo Palenil, in particular. Now, we’re putting everyone to sleep. I think the UAE team was perhaps expecting, like yesterday, to see a team that was not represented or poorly represented at the front, come and ride there, 100 kilometers from the finish. I think today, they’ll be able to calmly leave some space to the breakaway. 8 minutes 31. We still have this nagging pressure from the Alpecin team, and Scaroni is getting into position, because you see, in 1.3 kilometers, it will be the Red Bull kilometer. And Scaroni has the opportunity to pass Isaac Del Toro. Things are moving in the last kilometer. The Bardiani riders, obviously, with riders like Tarozzi. Rémy Rochas is following. Marcellusi too. Isn’t Scaroni going for it? It’s one of the most rewarded classifications, this general classification of the Red Bull kilometer. Rémy Rochas is insisting. And watch out, we’ve made a break for these three riders. Rémy Rochas, who wasn’t interested in this Red Bull sprint, but in the stage victory. He knows, as you said, Guillaume, that the only way to win today is to isolate yourself. Things are moving. Van Aert, Pedersen, the two inseparable ones. Followed by Vacek. There, we’ll have to be vigilant. We’re obviously thinking of Edouard Planckaert and Van den Boosche, Groves’ two teammates. From now on, we’ll have to control everything. Not easy for the two teammates of the Alpecin sprinter. Yes, you were talking about reconnaissance earlier. It’s true that we’re on a circuit here, so there will still be a bit of a benchmarking with two and a half laps completed on this circuit of the finish city. We’re catching up with Rémy Rochas and his breakaway companions from the Bardiani, including Tarozzi. There, it’s a real group that has just broken away. We have seven riders, four, five, six, seven riders at the front. We can see it. Who’s been trapped? It’s Nico Denz who will try to make the connection. I don’t think Van Aert is in front. It’s Dylan Van Barle who is there. I don’t think Pedersen is in front. It’s Dan Hoole who is in front. Edmondson. Edmondson. Isolated, just like Denz. We have Dylan Van Barle, we have De Pretto. We have Dan Hoole, we have Maestri, we have De Bondt, we have Conci. Entering the circuit, Jacky, Audrey. Who will react behind? 27 seconds, 28 seconds ahead for the Dries De Bondt group. Always looking for a French victory, whether for a Frenchman, for a French team in this Giro. There, it’s perhaps a small first-class funeral. I have that feeling too. 30 seconds. 1’53”. Is it over or not? Yes. Yes, because behind, no desire. Unless really, in the next few hundred meters, there are counterattacks. I think the carrots are cooked for the counterattack group. It might be the day of his life for Edouard Planckaert. Guest team, guys. Who are directly qualified. You didn’t go in the breakaways. You’re not playing the game. You can do that for us. Nico Denz who takes off. Not yet, but who gets away. With Edouard Planckaert who went off. We should soon see in action Dan Hoole, who hasn’t ridden for a few minutes, who is hanging around a bit at the back, just like Dylan Van Baarle. The experience of Nico Denz who, on a restart, managed to make the break. There was only one chance. We should already be in front. He managed to be in the group of about thirty riders, to be in the group of 11 with a time delay. And then, he felt there was something to do. Dylan Van der Baarle, Dan Hoole, weren’t riding and he preferred to try it alone. We didn’t see the bell. Last lap in this stage, 12.526 km. 26 seconds ahead for the German Nico Denz. We see all the riders who are in second, third, fourth position turn around. It’s never a good sign for harmony in this group. Some skip relays, we see the rider from the Bardiani who doesn’t pass. Nico Denz no longer really has any questions to ask himself. Pull, push, pull, push on the legs, crush the pedals, 33 seconds, 7.7 kilometers, again. He likes the solo effort, he’s not bad in time trials, Nico Denz. He’s on fire. When the heat is on, we’ll go find experienced riders to get going again with Dries De Bondt. And Larry Warbasse, who’s going to get going again. There’s a heatwave, and there’s no more time to wait at 6.7 kilometers to catch up with Nico Denz. And things are moving behind. Dan Hoole is revealing himself. 34 seconds behind, but we’re only 4.2 kilometers away. Look, who, obviously… He’s been waiting for him since earlier. He was waiting for him. He has a real reading of the race, Dries De Bondt, but he’s been too concerned with Dan Hoole. He let Nico Denz go, four kilometers away. In 2018, Nico Denz, who finished three behind, who had beaten his two companions in a sprint as well. There, there will be no need to sprint. It’s over, 46 seconds. The red flame is coming. He will even be able to savor Nico Denz, his third stage victory in the Giro d’Italia. We have to tell him, you have 45 seconds, he’s under the red flame. Sometimes you can raise your arm, but when you’re a runner, you don’t ask yourself that question. You always have a little doubt that creeps in. You should make up 48 seconds in a kilometer. Yes, but the runner doesn’t know that. We can tell him all we want to do, but we want to go… If we go as far as 200 meters, because you’ll see, he’ll turn around at one point or another. He knows he’s won the race. After that, it’s a natural reflex. He knows it now, you see? Nico Denz with the Giro. Already two stage wins in 2023, all in 48 hours. This Red Bull – Bora, after Primoz Roglic’s retirement, knew how to react. Of course, Giulio Pelizzari’s rise in the General Classification, but above all, it will seek its first stage victory this year at the Giro d’Italia. It will be the sixth in the World Tour. There were two victories for Sam Welsford in Australia at the start of the season. There were two stage wins at the Giro d’Catalunya, plus the General Classification victory for Primoz Roglic. Today, it’s Nico Denz who wins. He really has a special connection with this grand tour, a boy who trained in France at Chambéry. We might find him in France. It was on Eurosport. It’s yours. Nico is enjoying it. Nico Denz wins the 18th stage of the Giro d’Italia. At the end of his effort, at the end of his idea too, go towards your risk watching you do it, they’ll get used to it. This motto, which Nico Denz borrowed today and made his own. The sprint for second place. He came out well, Conci. Very well. Maestri, right in the center for the Polti, Edmondson’s comeback for the Picnic, it’s going to be for Mirco Maestri. With Planckaert, the riders we had cited among the fastest. Maestri’s rage, because he says to himself: I was fast. I was fast in the sprint and I may have come close to the greatest victory of my career on my national Tour. No, today is for the German Nico Denz. The Denz, Maestri, Edouard Planckaert outing, Nico Denz’s third victory in a Giro d’Italia. It was the German’s day of glory. The French teams, represented by Dries De Bondt, made the top 10 for the Decathlon.
