There are 5 things that I think most people absolutely do not realize enough about Bordeaux wine and Pomerol in particular, how exceptional those wines are, and why Pomerol produces THE single MOST expensive wine in Bordeaux and THE MOST ICONIC wine in the world…. I think you need to know about it.
After looking into Margaux, Pauillac, and St Emilion in Bordeaux, or Rioja and Barolo in Spain and Italy, today I want to explain the depth of Pomerol, why it’s such a fantastic appellation.
00:00 – Pomerol Bordeaux Wine Intro
01:25 – Pomerol is Merlot

there are fundamental things that I think most people absolutely do not realize enough about border wine and palom roll in particular how exceptional those wines are and why palom roll produces the single most expensive wine in Bordeaux and the most iconic wine in the world I think you absolutely need to know about it hello B and welcome to your new Bonner private wies video where we learn together everything that you need to know about wine weekly I’m your host Julian Mikel bord train wine maker yes I spent the past 25 years also making and tasting Fine Wines from all around the world after making my debuts as a wine maker at chatow Maro one of the first top growth of Bordeaux and today we’re continuing our wine in Five series five things that you need to know about all the top wine appellations around the world after looking into Margo and poak and s milon in bordo also R and Baro we’re going to cover the whole world so we covered Spain and Italy and a lot of France today I want to explain the depth of pal roll why it’s such a fantastic appellation let’s get into it [Music] [Music] have you heard about the delicious Merlo grape part of the Border blend by the way you can learn everything about Merlo in my dedicated F length video right here I know Merlo has faded away a little bit out of fashion in favor of pinoir after the sideways movie early in the 2000s because mow doesn’t work that well under certain hot climates like California and it needs a bit of a specific ter which we’ll talk about in a second but if there’s one place where Mero is and has always been exceptional it’s in Palm roll don’t disregard or disqualify or discredit Meo before you’ve actually tasted a very good pom roll like one of those we’ll talk about in a minute pom roll wines are generally 100% with sometimes a little bit of cabinet Frank and they are unquestionably 100% world class wines of exceptional quality and Longevity as we’ll discuss more also in a moment so how is Pomo so good what what’s happening here why is it so [Music] good well pom roll is a tiny village and it is one of bordo’s smallest appellations in fact hence its scarcity keep that in the back of your mind for later it’s on the right Bank of the grown River so sols contain more clay overall than gravel so a cooler ter generally which favors Mero more than cabinet sovon because the latter needs a lot more heat not Merlo secondly Pomo has a totally unique Tero because at a few meters of depth underneath the surface are deep and extremely rich layers of blue clay this is a type of clay that you could probably use for pottery for crafting pots and Crockery an extremely fine and dense clay clay is usually not very good for vulture it’s too rich and fertile for Vines and good wine in general but here the clay is so thick it dries out and cracks up and cuts the vines roots in summer underneath the surface so it is not a fertile clay soil yet it provides the vines s the water that they need because it absorbs a lot of water and even more importantly it gives the Merlo Grapes of Pomo their exceptional finess of tannin if you’ve ever tried a good pomal wine you would have noticed how exceptionally fine grain the tannins are and how dense the texture is because Pomo is an absolutely unique tiny area with underneath this very deep blue clay Tero and Clay infuses a lot of finess into the tannins I can’t stress this enough it’s just a very very rare soil type in the world and perfect for [Music] Merlo as I’ve just talked about palro wines are extremely finely textured very dense tants but also being Mero it’s specific of Mero it’s one of its features they are very smooth in texture very soft very mellow despite being really dense and generous which is also really rare in the world of wine this density combined with the fact that Merlo is perfectly ripe here it’s never too cooked or Jammy because it’s not that hot aoir in Palm roll this gives wines a fantastic balance which in turn makes them exceptionally age worthy pommer wines are some of the most long livv bottles that you can buy Legendary vintages like of Petrus which we’ll talk about more in a second a legendary wine are from vintages like 1945 1950 61 70 and a lot more recent ones of course meaning that those wines can age for many many decades more than most of even the most famous Shadows of the Left Bank by the way while you we’re comparing appellations here don’t forget that at the end of the video we’ll rate pal roll on our worldwide appellations leaderboard so we’ll see how it ranks in the world compared to other appellations like Margo or S milon so make sure to stay tuned and perhaps at this time also to give us a little like a little gesture And subscribe while you’re down there if you’re enjoying this video go on we we Mercy me if this’s one name people associate with pom roll and bordo in general it is this wine from this tiny Winery called Petrus it is essentially the most expensive bowl of wine and just a legend everyone talks about but that very few people have ever seen let alone tasted a bottle of have you ever seen a bottle of Peto tasted it I’d be curious to know how many of you have and in which circumstances let me know your experience with Petrus in the comments we don’t even know how many bottles of Petrus are made each year but it’s not many probably around 30,000 per year why is Petru such an icon and so good well it’s actually quite hard to pinpoint just and summarize very simply they’re probably on the very best spot for growing vines in palro just the based soil on this already exceptionally good Tero of pom in general they just have the best little area on there and then because they’ve been so famous for so long the attention to details from the winery staff the knowhow accumulated by vric culturalists and wine makers for many decades delivers the CR laem while scarcity makes the Stellar pricing at the same time the three most expensive pomal wines right here and I’ll give you a few more affordable names as well to try to get a real feel for what is pom roll Petrus the most expensive one sells for about $4,100 a bottle those are Global wine prices across all vintages according to Wine Searcher then as lean at around $3,700 a bottle made famous by r reviews given by Robert Parker in particular a few decades ago you can watch more about what I I personally think about the influence of Robert Parker in this video right here and for the third one we drop quite a few bucks with lafur that retails for only about $11,000 a bot but don’t worry if you only have $300 to spend on a bottle of exceptional wines that your grandchildren will be able to taste you can go for either shanoa which is one of my personal favorites CH laf petus leil or even La Conant which is a wine making friend of mine I studied with in Bordeaux actually makes this wine and she does a fantastic job here for a palm roll at around $150 a bottle I go for chatau clean do you have a favorite Palm roll personally let us know in the comments that’d be fantastic to hear from from you now it’s time to rate pom roll so we can compare it to other prestigious appellations around the world which is what we do every time I make one of those videos in our boner private wies appalation [Music] leaderboard quality in bom roll is essentially as high as it gets in the world of wine as we said it’s a tiny appellation and its expensive so producers work really thoughtfully and have a great Tero so wines are just plain good it’s a 10 out of 10 Prestige is also extremely high because if you know PM roll you know virtually all wines are good there if you have a bottle of palom roll it has to be something quite special although as we’ll talk more about in a second the more footable ones are not Legends of course and everyone doesn’t always know the name bom roll less perhaps than Centon or shaton of dup because it’s much smaller at production it’s a 9 out of 10 prices of bom wines are very high some of the priciest in Bordeaux if you compare it to the top burgundies however or even some icons of the Napa Valley like Opus One I tasted recently $300 a bottle is not that high so it’s another 9ine out of 10 bom ra wines are quite scarce again it’s a small appalation it’s not as small as some burgundy gr crew so it is not hard to find a pomal wine and because they’re a little pricey they do not just fly out of the shelves before you get a chance to swipe your credit card it’s an8 out of 10 finally our quality price ratio if you buy a relatively affordable pom roll is it going to be good well it’s not easy to find an affordable Palm roll unlike Sant milon or even shaton of dap where you can find a $20 or $30 example those are going to be very rare in palom roll and probably not that great at that price you’d have to spend at least $50 to $70 for something that truly reflects the quality of palm roll or even more like $100 for a really solid one and that’s not such great value so a mere seven out of 10 here and our grand score is 43 out of 50 points yes Pomo takes the lead as the best best worldwide appalation in the world so far topping Margo and Baro themselves wow I can’t wait to get into burgundy to see if we can find even better wine gems and better appellations thanks for watching again today make sure to watch more of our videos like And subscribe to help us produce more content like this it helps us immensely it’s free it’s only a little gesture but make sure you do here’s my video about Sant milon the one of about Robert Parker one about all the most expensive border wines right here and even some champagne content for you stay tuned and I will see you soon in the wonderful world of wine cheers [Music]

Very nice video, I enjoyed it a lot. My all time Pomerol favs are : Vieux Chateau Certan, La Conseillante, Trotanoy, Clinet, among others. Even though Petrus and Le Pin are bucket list wines, I would never spend that kind of money on a single bottle of wine no mater what.
ya want my petrus experience? voila 1997 i stole a bottle in london costing 467 quid 1976 vintage the lovely clay was there but overall the wine sucked, coarse ,uglish tobbaco aromas i loved trotanoy, conseillante, fleur gai go for masseto, son! cheers
I just got into Pomerol. I had a 2012 Clos l’eglise a few months ago and it was incredible. Now I’m hooked on Pomerol!
Don Melchor 2021 is the Best wine in the World.
Loved this video. I need to get into pomerol, just looking for the appropriate price to dive into. I’ve seen Petrus but never had it nor do I know anyone that has
Is the Le Carillon de Rouget 2018 worth buying?
No mention of VCC?!
I seen Petrus but at such absurd prices that I have never tasted. I do love Clinet that I have tried and will seek some of your other recommendations.
Bought six bottles of Haut-Tropchaud a while ago. Tried one which was very nice but too young. Did you ever try that one?
Had Petrus 87 and 82. Both at blind tasting with friends. the 87 was actually called out by 2 people (what an audacity to think that someone would bring it for lunch…:)). The legendary 82 was tasted after 6 other wines which was a mistake as it didn't give hit enough space to show itself.
I tried Petrus but it was just a small glass that a friend opened up for his anniversary, and it was long ago. Quite exceptional from what I remember, though it was long ago when they were priced far less. It was 1990.
Château Clinet is one that I like very much and also Chateau La Fleur Petrus. Both are memorable wines.
I think Chateau La Conseillante wines are sublime especially after Mariel took over wine making. Recently opened a 2017 (supposedly not a good vintage) but it put a smile on the faces of everyone who had it… nuff said…
Pomerol is my favorite appellation in the world, just pure beauty. 2024 was a good year for me visiting Petrus, Le Pin, Lafleur, La Fleur-Petrus, Vieux Chateau Certan, La Conseillante, Clinet and Gazin. My favorite from Pomerol is VCC and La Conseillante, and for ”budget” i often buy Plince that i think is good quality – ratio
Tried Petrus(85) but the best Pomerol i tried was the 82 Lafleur, just amazing and on level with the best burgundys i have had. Great video Julien!
Clinet? I have twelve Pomerol dating back to 1978, good investment, something to delight on opening!! ❤
Danish wine trader here. Drank Petrus 89, 91 and 92. Absolutely amazing and one of the best wine experiences in my life.
Tasted 79,81 & 13 Petrus some of the best wines I ever tasted chateau lafleur petrus 09 comes close 😊
Given that Pomerol is so small and the reputation is so high, are there any Pomerols that are simply not good?
Last year i found a very reasonably priced Pomerol, Chateau de Sales. Is this a good wine?
Bonjour Julien! Would you go for La Gravette de Certan 2018 or L'Espérance de Trotanoy 2018?
Wine Spectator owner Marvin Shanken interviewed Ernest and Julio Gallo for his magazine in the 1980s. They told of the time they once tried Petrus, didn't like it very much, and finished the evening with Gallo Hearty Brgundy, which they liked better!
I tried Petrus when I was a California winemaker in the 1980s. I was on the team at Duckhorn Vineyards, and our focus was merlot..
I'm like the saint Emilion wines it's my favourite!!
Excellent, I enjoyed the presentation, it was succinct to the point full of good information, didn’t blather on, I shall look out further wines from France and other wine growing countries.
