About me:
I am looking for a new bike after my (lower quality, modern aluminum hybrid) bike broke. I use it for daily commutes with a very heavy backpack (35-40 lbs), which means that I am not worried about maximizing my weight efficiency. The commutes are very short, roughly fifteen minutes each way, and I go on long rides on the weekend. I don't have much experience with vintage bikes but am interested in learning more about them as a hobby. My primary concerns for buying a new bike are fit (I'm very tall) and durability. While I understand that parts will likely break eventually, I want to be able to replace them myself when possible and learn from the experience. I am also new to road bikes, and was wondering how careful you have to be with them: how much do I need to avoid potholes, can I ride on gravel paths, etc.
About the bike:
The bike was listed on craiglist just under a month ago an hour away from a major North American city with a large and expensive vintage bike market. It is a Peugeot PY10S (does anyone know how I can confirm the model?) that the seller claims rides well. I do not have much information about its riding history, but it looks to be in good condition. The shifters, brakes, derailleurs, and crank arms are all campagnolo nuovo, which was part of the appeal for me. I am going to look at it today, and was wondering if you have any specific advice for how to inspect this bike. Also, what do you think a fair price would be for this bike in this context (I understand this is a pretty arbitrary question, but what would you pay for this bike?) TIA
