Broughty Castle is a historic castle on the banks of the River Tay in Broughty Ferry, Dundee, Scotland. Built in 1496 on a rocky promontory, it has faced many sieges and battles.

[Music] Bry Castle is a historic Castle on the banks of the river Tay in Bry Ferry dunde Scotland it was completed around 1495 although the site was earlier fortified in 1454 when George Douglas fourth Earl of Angus received permission to build on the site his son archal Douglas fifth Earl of Angus was cered into seeding the castle to the [Music] crown the main tower house forming the center of the castle with four floors was built by Andrew the second Lord gray who was granted the castle in 1490 [Music] the castle saw military action during the 16th century War of the Ruff Wu after the battle of Pinky in September 1547 it was surrendered by purchase to the English by its owner Lord gray of [Music] Fus the position of the castle itself was advantageous to Modern Warfare as it was discovered that the Swift River current made for Naval seal bombardment and practical soon after taking possession the English Garrison further fortified broy by building a ditch across the landwood side of the Castle’s prometer Edward Clinton began the reic ation on the advice of the Italian engineer Master John Rosetti and left 100 men guarded by free [Music] ships William Bruce of ell feared the English would build an outpost on the south side of the Tay The Garrison was first led by Sir Andrew Dudley the Duke of northumberland’s brother his Garrison included Italian and Spanish so solders and he hoped the gray of Wilton would send him an expert French [Music] surgeon the town of dundi agreed to support the Garrison and resist the governor of Scotland the conable of Dundee and the council signed the agreement although under duress of Dudley’s two gunships [Music] the Earl of oral tried to capture the castle on 22nd of November 1547 and again in January 1548 with 150 men led by the soldier Duncan dundes without [Music] success on Christmas Day 1549 there was a Conference held at Sterling County and it was agreed that French gunships would be brought to besiege broti 12 English ships arrived to support the Defenders and it was on the 12th of February 1550 before the French and the Scots managed to recapture broti the castle was attacked again in 1651 by General monnik and his parliamentary army during the wars of the Three Kingdoms on this occasion The ruless Defenders fled with a [Music] fight after 1666 when the graay family sold the castle it gradually became more ruinous in 1846 the castle was brought by the Edinburgh and Northern Railway company in order to build an adjacent Harbor for their Railway Ferry In 1855 the Castle was acquired by the war office with its intentions of using it to defend the Harbor from the Russians in 1860 renewed fears of a French invasion led the war office to rebuild and fortify the site the site was rebuilt according to the designs of Robert row and Anderson the walls of the main Courtyard were rebuilt and new wings and Courtyards were added to the Tower [Music] from 1886 to 1887 a range was built to house submarine miners to the east of the castle in an emergency these would lay mines in the Tay estri to damage enemy ships between 1889 and 1891 a machine was built within the Western enclosure which also led to a major remodeling of the gun imp placements the castle remained in military use until 1932 and again between 1939 and 1949 the last defense related alterations were made in the second world war when a defense post was built within the top of the main tower in 1969 the castle opened as a museum operated by dunde city council the museum is free of charge the structure of Bry Castle is now designated as a scheduled ancient [Music] Monument e
