The disused railway line from Keswick to Threlkeld has become a fantatsic facility for the area. It is so accesible and inclusive, there were loads of families, joggers, dogs (including lucky ones getting pedalled around!) motorised wheelchairs, and kudos to the gut that looked like he had wheeled himself.
The trail crosses the River Greta almost too many times to count, each is a real treat, and some of the views are stunning. Despite all the signs, we didn’t see any red squirrels today, although we did get a good sighting of a Dipper, Britains only aquatic songbird.
The Horse and Farrier pub does accommodation and would be a great place to stay if you didn’t want to miss out on the excellent array of real ales. The beer garden was first rate, with a view guaranteed to improve the enjoyment of your beverage.
We did the trail as an out and back, but it could be incorporated as the return from any of the rides North and East of Keswick, such as the Old Coach Road.
We were staying at Castlerigg Hall Caravan Site near Keswick, approximately 5 minutes drive away.
We parked at Keswick Leisure Centre. Unfortunately the pool is permanently closed, but the gym is still open (as are the parking ticket machines…).
