This video is from my 8 days solo cycling adventure to the south-west part of Iceland in September 2022. My journey went from the gravel roads of the highlands to the beautiful south coast, covering a total of close to 800 kilometers, of which about 250 kilometers were gravel. My bike was a Fuji cyclocross/gravel bike.

[Music] this is my story from when I went to the land of Fire and Ice cycling for 8 days I explored parts of Iceland on my gravel bike from the interior to the coastal regions in the breathtaking South what a trip it [Music] was I started out in the city of rikic capital of Iceland here I made the final preparations for the next few days had some time for a walk around [Music] town I had prepped my bike with paniers and filled them with my tent sleeping bag clothes and other supplies then I made my way out of the city it was a beautiful but windy September day I followed Road 36 towards thinger National Park the habitation was long gone and the views kept getting even better as I headed away from the [Music] coast my bike was doing great even though it’s not really built for a trip like this wind kept my Pace down most of the day as I crossed over vast open Plains on my journey Inland I would let my legs decide how far I could make it today but I was following the main tourist route known as The Golden Circle towards Gere after 8 hours and 95 km on the bike I decided to call it a day found a beautiful campsite near a place called uid I rounded off the day in the best possible way with a nice hot bath under the [Music] skies the next day I woke up to an absolutely beautiful morning with Clear Blue Skies perfect for a long day on the bike my plan for the day was to follow Road 35 further Inland towards the hot springs at farer [Music] after a few kilometers I came to one of Iceland’s major attractions G here here every few minutes the pressure of the boiling water underground causes an eruption of steam tens of meters into the [Music] air I continued on the road towards gfos a beautiful waterfall a popular tour tourist attraction I still had a lot of ground to cover so I decided to wait with my visit till the next day another spectacular view had caught my attention as well the impressive ice caps of Lang yokul and hofs yokul now time had come to leave the beaten path behind Venture into one of Iceland’s Infamous mountain roads in between these two major [Music] glaciers [Music] [Music] with 75 km left to vaver the gravel road begins this is what I came here for Long desolated Mountain Roads with very few cars passing by the first few kilometers of the road are mostly uphill there’s a tough climb with a fully loaded bike but once on top top I was rewarded with some amazing [Music] [Music] views the hours went by and the road kept getting bumpier at one point one of my paniers broke off because of the violent shaking luckily I was able to fix it with some cable ties and some rusty wires I found nearby the road seemed to be going on forever it was getting late then in the evening after 9 hours and 110 km on the bumpy roads I finally made it to farra valer this place in the middle of the Icelandic Highlands is known for its Hot Springs steam is rising from the ground and there are pots of boiling water everywhere interestingly the Sheep seem to like it too made myself a quick dinner in the tent before I headed out to what I’ve been longing for all day bath in the geothermal pool at this place [Music] after a good night’s sleep it was back on the bike the same road I came in yesterday the plan for today was to First make it to Goos then see how the legs feel the first few kilometers of the road was really rough and it was a struggle to keep the bike going straight at times yet it was an absolutely beautiful morning with spectacular views towards the Hoffs your cool [Music] [Music] glacier [Music] [Music] [Music] after nearly 7 hours on the bike I arrived at gulfos a truly breathtaking [Music] sight the day was not over yet I figured I could make it yet another 30 km to a place called fluer in the early evening well over 8 hours and 120 km since the start in falier I called it a day and pitched my tent at the local [Music] campsite I woke up to yet another beautiful day the next morning the clouds and the mist from the day before was long gone as I started today’s Ride Along huge farmlands with sheeps and cattle scattered [Music] around the plan for today was to make it the 120 km to the remote Hot Springs at L manaager as I headed east along Road 32 I had Splendid views towards hea Iceland’s most active [Music] [Music] volcano [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] with 35 km left to land manaager I made a sharp right turn from Road f26 into Road F28 this remote gravel road goes through some spectacular scenery as it winds its way South through old lava fields around small lakes and Green [Music] Hills [Music] [Music] [Music] the sun was setting and I still had a bit of Road left the legs were tired but the scenery was like no other and the weather was more than I could have ever hoped for going to Iceland in [Music] September finally after 9 and 1/2 hours on the bike I arrived at L manaager known for its hot springs and stunning scenery it been a long day but hey one of the most beautiful days on the bike [Music] ever I spent a good two hours relaxing in the warm water last night glancing at the stars above I could not resist another dip before setting off from L Mana logger the next [Music] morning today’s plan was to continue on road F28 further South towards the south coast of Iceland this road is truly remote and very few cars passes by here here you can really get away from the crowds of tourists and get to feel the remoteness and beauty of Iceland not everyone get to [Music] see I got my first experience with the river crossings that some of Iceland’s mountain roads are so famous for being late in the Autumn and with dry weather recently was not too deep but freezing cold [Music] [Music] anyway [Music] [Music] the hours went by and I had covered only some 30 km since the start at land manaager the road was quite demanding with many short and steep hills along the Route but but what really made me gasping for air was the scenery which was absolutely [Music] [Applause] [Music] breathtaking [Music] after a long descent from the highlands I came to the remotely located tourist shelters at holisol where I pitched my tent for the night the sound of barking sheeps being collected for the season I only managed to put in some 40 km over 6 hours today and there is still a long way way to go before I get to the [Music] coast after a misty evening the Sun was shining the next morning I continued on road F28 towards the South Coast the destination for today was the Coastal Village Vic some 80 km away the first 30 km or so was a beautiful gravel road with views towards the impressive mytle [Music] shle [Music] with 48 km to go I came to Iceland’s Road one the Ring Road that goes around the entire Island I would follow this road all the way back to rovik but first I spent a night in [Music] VI Vick imal is a village on the very south tip of Iceland known for its beautiful black beach in the stacks of balt Rock towering above the water off the [Music] coast I started the next morning climbing the Steep Road up renis FAL next to Vic this was a tough climb but the views made it worthwhile The Cliffs here are known to be the home of many species of seabirds on the West Side of the Mountain are some absolutely spectacular views towards the black renes fiara Beach and the Cliffs at dear [Music] Holo I continue my journey West with some exceptional views towards myal shul it was a cloudy morning but dry and I had a nice Tailwind helping me on the way I took a small detour off the main road to visit Sim yakul which is a sidearm of the larger Myrtle shakul it’s an impressive site with large blocks of ice floating in the lake below it’s a short distance between the highlights on Iceland’s beautiful South Coast the scaga fos waterfall is one of them the sun had appeared turning it into a magnificent sight with the vest manau year archipel go in the Horizon I kept on pedaling Northwest towards rikic the weather was great but a lot of rain was expected the next day my plan was to make it the 150 km back to rovic by tomorrow and with the Grim prospects weatherwise I decided to put in as many kilometers as I could today luckily the wind gave me a helping [Music] hand [Music] well over 9 hours and 150 km on the bike since the start in Vic I rolled into SOS a small town some 60 km from rovik I was glad I was able to make it this far today because tomorrow is going to be wet finally on my last day of cycling in Iceland the weather turned against me I was glad that I only had 60 km left to ruic imagine it being like this for the past week that would not be very pleasant at all I guess cycling in Iceland can be either heaven or hell sometimes you just got to have a bit of luck the road between cus and reik is a busy one with some heavy traffic with the rain fog and frozen fingers it felt a bit sketchy at times after about 3 hours on the bike I finally rolled up in front of hrim skira in the heart of rovik completely soaked Frozen and tired after a long week logging close to 800 km on my 8 Days Adventure through some of the most spectacular scenery there is 8 days are just enough to get a taste of what Iceland has to offer my journey to the Southwest part of the country has been spectacular there are still many remote and beautiful roads left to discover for a later tour hopefully it will be sooner than [Music] later [Music] B
