🚶‍♂️ Today I took a casual walk through Fulford, a peaceful suburb just south of York, England, nestled along the beautiful River Ouse—but things took a surprising turn when I came across an abandoned-looking building that turned out to be anything but ordinary…

Along the way, I dive into:

The rich character of Fulford village

Local cycling culture and nearby bike shops 🚴‍♂️

A peek at cool small businesses you shouldn’t miss

And the rapidly growing Germany Beck housing development reshaping this historic area

[Music] Good morning and welcome back to Raising Kids in Yorkshire. This vlog is about one area in York and if you’re not interested to hear about it, go somewhere else. This um vlog is filmed in Fulford on the 7th of May 2025 and it’s a gorgeous gorgeous day in Yorkshire and I’m here by the river in Bulford and I’d like to tell you a little bit about this area. So this area is home to North Yorkshire Police headquarters. It’s home to many local, national, and even international businesses. Multinationals, should they say. Um, this area is very close to the city. You could practically walk by the river into the city. Uh, it’s well connected by buses. It is also home to uh York Design Outlet which is not uh located directly in the village but just on the outskirts of the Fulford village and uh it’s one of those places where you get to shop till you drop and it also houses Yorkshire winter wonderland in December and part of January. Today is absolutely amazing. There are number of uh boats and barges as you have as you have seen. There’s also some festivals here in the summer. Some local festivals you probably not heard of. If you are local, you probably didn’t hear about them. It’s a lovely area. It’s close to universities and it’s home to a lot of students. There are lots of lovely pubs here and it’s a really nice and vibrant area to leave that also provides a little retreat by the river. Look how peaceful it is today. Look. Um I absolutely love coming down here. Um just because it just feels like it you have the both best of both worlds. You’ve got great coffee shops. You’ve got great picnic areas. You could cycle. You could walk into town. Um, look at the picnic areas just there. You’ve got the woodland here. You’ve got the water. Yeah, you definitely have everything on your doorstep. And you’ve got amazing architecture. There’s some really, really old houses here. Uh, converted stables. And look, anybody knows what this is? It’s like a part of the I feel like this is something to do with the army barracks or something. Anybody from this area knows? Please drop a comment below. I’d love to find out what this is. Feels like one of those trucks that used to carry supplies or something. But this area is a heaven for dog walkers, cyclists, um anybody who loves um nature, but also likes to feel part of the community, to be surrounded by people. um and sort of you know not to feel too isolated but at the same time you know have a bit of nature and places to walk. It’s also home to a cemetery and the cemetery full cemetery is a wonderful place for events uh for walks and just it’s like an open air museum really. Um it’s a really nice place to walk if you fancy something different. Um a bit of thoughts, a bit of you know peace. Um it’s a very old cemetery and uh it’s located right here in the heart of the Fulford village. I have done a walk there. They’ve done a lot of work. There’s a space there for workshops and there’s also some talks going on sometimes that you could take part in. So I feel like this area cers for everybody for the old for the young. There’s a number of playgrounds here and look you could even see you could even walk to another great area called Nesmire. From here you could see Terrace Clock Tower which is the famous factory of course been converted now to residential apartments and that. So let me show you. I might have to step back a bit. I love that path there. I think um why I need to go back a bit. You could see how well connected it is for cyclists and how green it is. They have even bike shops here. So if you’re cycling, if you get into trouble, there’s a bike shop in the little estate. It’s all called Get Cycling, I think. Um the sign is right there. But I’m trying to get a glimpse of the terrace tower. And I might have to even jump on a rock here. You see it there? There we go. That’s right there is a terrace tower. Important thing about this area is the house prices are on the on the pricey side. Yep. It is so close to city and it’s also home to an outstanding secondary school and this will always push the prices up in York. Ful for school is a really really renown and really good school. Um so because of that I suppose it just drives the prices up but also the houses are quite historic. They are um old, spacious, but it’s also there’s also the whole estate being built here with the new builds. You might have heard David Wilson home. So, if you are looking to get in the area, check out Germany Back. I’ll put the links below for the development. It’s on the outskirts of the village. It’s not directly in the village, but there are some units available there if you’re looking to move into this area. And it’s a lovely, lovely area. If I if I had the money myself, I’d definitely be buying somewhere in Fulford. And not just because of the school because obviously I have to think about that with the children, but um it’s just a nice area to walk. There’s complaints about traffic. You know, the old Iceland shop being converted into McDonald’s, so there’s been a local debate on that. But aside from all of that, this area has a lot to offer. So, please drop me a link below if you think um you like this area, if you live here and what your thoughts are if you were moving to York. What areas would you consider? What’s your budget? What are you looking for? Three bed, four bed, five bed, detach, semi, you know, we plan to do a whole lot of um vlogs about houses, prices, how to find one, and what to look out for. And we plan to do the whole series of covering different areas in York and telling you what they offer and then you can match to what you’re looking for. But it’ be great to know if people want to move to York, what do you look for? What is your budget? Um what’s your ideal home? Do you want coffee shops? Do you want the rural location?
