Plovdiv is the second-largest city in Bulgaria after the capital Sofia, and is often cited as the oldest continuously inhabited city in Europe, with history dating back over 8,000 years. Located in south-central Bulgaria on the banks of the Maritsa River, Plovdiv is famously built around seven hills, giving it the nickname “The City of the Seven Hills.” Throughout history, it has been home to Thracians, Romans, Byzantines, and Ottomans, each leaving behind a rich cultural legacy.
