my first bicycle. Hello, my name is Ben and I want to tell you about a very special day. It was the day I got my first bicycle and learned to ride it. This day was exciting and a little scary, but it made me so happy. Do you have a bicycle? I love riding mine. This story is about a new bike, family, and trying hard. Ready? Let’s start. It was my 7th birthday, and the sun was shining. I woke up early at 6:00. I was excited because birthdays are fun. Excited means very happy and ready for something great. Say it with me. Excited. Good. I ran to the kitchen. My mom and dad were there smiling. My big brother Jake was there, too. Jake is 10 years old and he’s funny. Mom said, "Happy birthday, Ben." Dad gave me a hug. A hug is when you hold someone with your arms. I felt happy. Happy means feeling good inside. We ate breakfast together. Breakfast was pancakes with syrup. Pancakes are round, soft, and sweet. They’re delicious. Delicious means very good to eat. Say it. Delicious. Great. After breakfast, Dad said, "Ben, we have a surprise for you. A surprise is something you don’t know about, and it’s usually fun." I said, "What is it?" Mom said, "Come outside." I was so curious. Curious means wanting to know more. Say it. Curious. Good. We went to the backyard. The backyard is the garden behind our house. It has grass and a big tree. There I saw a bicycle. It was red and shiny with a black seat and a bell. A bell is a small thing that makes a sound. Ding. Ding. I shouted. A bicycle for me. Dad said. Yes, Ben. It’s your birthday gift. A gift is something you give to someone. I ran to the bike and touched it. It was beautiful. Beautiful means very nice to look at. Say it. Beautiful. Great. I said, "Thank you, Mom. Thank you, Dad. I was so happy. I wanted to ride the bike right away." But I didn’t know how. I felt a little scared. Scared means afraid. Say it. Scared. Good. Jake said, "Don’t worry, Ben. I’ll help you." Jake already knows how to ride a bike. He’s fast. Dad said, "Let’s practice in the backyard. It’s safe. Safe means not dangerous." The backyard was perfect because the grass is soft if you fall. I got on the bike. The seat was high and my feet touched the pedals. Pedals are the parts you push with your feet to move the bike. Dad held the bike so I wouldn’t fall. He said, "Push the pedals, Ben." I pushed but the bike wobbled. Wobble means to move side to side, not straight. I was nervous. Nervous means a little afraid about something new. Dad said, "It’s okay. Try again." I pushed the pedals again and Dad ran behind me holding the bike. Jake clapped and said, "Go, Ben." Clap means to hit your hands together. I felt braver. Brave means not afraid. Say it. Brave. Good. After a few tries, I started to balance. Balance means to stay straight and not fall. The bike moved forward and I smiled. Mom watched from the porch. The porch is a place outside the house where we sit. She said, "You’re doing great, Ben." I felt proud. Proud means happy about what you do. But then I wobbled too much and fell on the grass. It didn’t hurt because the grass was soft. Jake laughed and said, "Falling is normal." I laughed too and got back on the bike. Dad held the bike again, but this time he let go. I didn’t know. I was riding by myself. The bike went straight and I pushed the pedals hard. I shouted, "I’m riding." Jake ran next to me and said, "Yes, Ben, you’re awesome." Awesome means very, very good. Say it. Awesome. Great. I rode around the backyard and the bell went ding ding. The wind felt cool on my face. Riding was fun. Fun means happy and exciting. After practicing, we went to the park. The park is near our house. It has a path for bikes. A path is a road you walk or ride on. Dad said, "Let’s try the path, Ben." I was a little nervous, but Jake said, "You can do it." We took the bike to the park. Mom carried a basket with water and apples. The path was smooth, not bumpy. Smooth means flat and easy to ride on. I got on my bike and dad walked next to me. Jake rode his bike, too. His bike is blue. I rode slowly at first. Some kids in the park saw me and waved. Wave means to move your hand to say hello. I waved back and rang my bell. Ding. Ding. I felt like a big kid. Mom said, "Look at Ben go." I rode faster and Jake rode next to me. We went around the park two times. My legs were tired, but I was so happy. Riding in the park was the best. After riding, we sat on a bench in the park. Mom gave us apples. The apples were red and crunchy. Crunchy means they make a sound when you eat them. We drank water, too. Dad said, "Ben, you learned to ride today. I’m proud of you." I smiled and said, "Thank you for the bike." Jake said, "Now we can ride together everyday. I liked that idea. Riding with Jake would be fun." When we got home, it was time for my birthday party. My grandma, grandpa, and cousins came. We ate cake. The cake was chocolate with cream. It was yummy. Everyone sang, "Happy birthday, Ben." I blew out seven candles. Candles are small sticks with fire on top. I made a wish. A wish is something you want. I wish to ride my bike everywhere. After cake, I showed my bike to my cousins. They said, "It’s cool." Cool is another word for awesome. At night, I was tired but happy. I took a shower and put on my pajamas. Pajamas are clothes you wear to sleep. I went to my room and looked at my bike outside. It was under the tree, shiny in the moonlight. I thought about the day. Getting the bike, learning to ride, going to the park, and my party. It was the best birthday ever. I felt thankful. Thankful means happy for what you have. I went to bed and dreamed about riding my bike. In my dream, I rode to a big hill and saw a rainbow. That day changed me. I learned to be brave and try new things. Now I ride my bike every weekend. Do you have a bike? Maybe you can tell a story about learning something new. Stories are fun and they help you practice English. Practice time. Let’s practice some words from the story. Repeat after me. Bicycle. Bicycle. Next. Brave. Brave. And one more. Fun. Fun. Good. Now try a sentence. Riding a bicycle is fun. Say it. Riding a bicycle is fun. Great. Practice these words at home.
