A walk-through of the only connection from the centre of Kennington (pop. 4000+) onto national cycle route 5 into Oxford.
If this one connection could be improved then a great many daily cycle journeys could be made car-free.
[Music] So, here we are. Cycle route five, NC5, right next to the main part of Kennington, right in the middle of Kennington. The only way to get to Kennington apart from cycle about a mile in that direction and then half a mile back again is here. This look at this. So somebody built this pedestrian bridge. Quite modern. I don’t know what year it was built, rebuilt, and then somebody came along when they were building it and went, “Oh, you know what? Supposed to put in some cycle provision. Do you know what? We’ll just weld this little cycle track to the side. That’ll do it. Tick tick the box. Got cycle provision. However, if you’ve got a bike trailer or a cargo bike or a wheelchair, try getting it up that that’s one side and then down the other side. But it had to be this high so that they could electrify the line. But guess what? They didn’t electrify the line, so there wasn’t even an actual reason to do it. Unless they do electrify the line in the end, maybe they will. So just this last little bit to go and then lovely lovelies and the only way you can get to the main part of Kennington is down this lovely lovely beautifully kept track here. Very well preserved. outside the bins from the pub. And there you go. You come out, you are literally the middle of Kennington where thousands of people live and thousands of people who can cycle to work into Oxford can’t because of that. [Music] [Music]
