Join the Rusty Nail and myself on an epic and hilly tour of Monmouthshire where we explored Rusty Nail’s childhood holiday destination. We visited 3 amazing castles (Skenfrith, Grosmont and White Castle) on a beautiful sunny early May day.
A fantastic route with some stunning scenery even though there was a lot of moaning going on about the hills!!

[Music] Good morning YouTube. Where are we? Where are we? We are in Where are we? Monmouth. In Monmouth Shire, a county of England. We’re going on a Russell Rusty now inspired ride from his youth when he used to go camping by a river and a castle in the middle of nowhere. He’s planned the route. God help us. Let’s see how the day unfolds. All I’ll say is the driver was very nice. It’s blue skies, beautiful on. But [Music] fly on our bridge. Come on out. Built in 1270. it up. Town defense any medieval bridge in Britain. There’s a gate to standing on the bridge. Trucks reading to you. The gate house has served as a toll house, guard room, jail, and dwelling house. Beautiful. Oh, look, look. There’s the door. Bet our American viewers will be impressed with the age of that. Beautiful. Nice little river down there. Came on and going through the little me. He hated that. Christy’s got his bar bag, rock sack. He’s camping for the week. Sandwiches, cat lunch. Yeah, I don’t think you can see that up on the right there in the field that’s going up the hills of Vyard. There are newly add vineyards in [Music] Wales. In fact, I’m not sure if Monmouth is in Wales or England. Monmouth should I fancy is in England, but don’t quote me on that. Right on the border. Whilst it’s sunny, it’s a bit fresh to be short sleeves and shorts. But we’re out on the bike with the easy riders. Funny little [Music] house. Oh, we’re taking a left right. for a bit navigation from Rusty Dell. Could go wrong. His track record in this department is not been that successful. Look at him go. We’re on our first We’re on our first hill. Oh, he’s going to be going mental with me. Last night I spoke to him and he said there better not be loads of also today. Oh dear. So funny. Go on chip. Pal you getting on ch. You love hills, don’t you? No. Oh dear. Just been up a little smelly one. First couple of miles straight into a hill. [Music] Heat. Heat. Cool. Jeez, look at yours. What’s that? Erected by Lord Langat for the benefits of the tenants and the neighbors. Oh, 1867. It’s an old well. Oh, well he’s having a face. Why? Have a look. Beautiful lanes. These are no traffic, nothing. Beautiful. Chub was asking me how many eels there is. Well, there’s quite a few today. Oh dear. He said he don’t like doing any any hills any more than 10°. Steeper than 10°. He’s going to be proper jarred off of me today. Cool. Look at this rib. It’s like flipping gravel. He’s flying along. I’m going have to tell him in a minute. It’s a It’s a marathon, not a sprint. He’s going to be hanging later. Just stopped here. Chub’s having a drink by looks of things. Jesus. Jesus. He’s another hill. Just stopped by this uh looks like an apple orchard. Didn’t know they drunk soda in Wales. And there we are. Grass has picked a pretty hilly route. Beautiful scenery, but come around corners and there’s an absolute stinker. Bit like this now. Oh, look at that. Could do without that. Smash his face in later. Don’t go too far now. Just come down a bit. So you’re level with That’s it. Keep going down. Come in lower. So it’s a bit head. Yeah, I used to boat up down here. Well, I used to camp over there. This is the first castle tour for getting [Music] ripper castle. [Music] Oh inside the [Music] dungeon. Taking this up. Taking the drone [Music] up. Heat. Heat. All right. Heat. Skenrift. And now we’re off to Gmont. Rosmont. Another place we used to go camp in a tent or a caravan. Uh first one was in a trailer tent. Then mom and dad caravan. Nice. Good. Another bloody hell. Bloody hell. Look at the scenery though. That’s the first car we’ve seen in about 45 minutes. [Music] [Music] A big L on the right over there. Can’t be that far away from Abrai. Sugarloaf. Oh yeah. [Music] [Music] That’s where I’ve gone. Another freaking hill. Oh, you That [Music] hello. This is the second castle. approaching it now in [Applause] [Music] Crosmont. Castle number two. Oh, look. Proper uh moat. Yeah. like that. Why me? That thing on top of there. [Music] [Music] Let’s Go out and I can be saved. Tired and I tried to swim again. Poke me down upon my knees. Oh, I beg I beg and please singing com things on sand. Shoot an apple off my head and a trouble that can be named. Tigers waiting to be tamed. singing you. [Music] Confusion never stops. Closing walls and ticking clocks. Going to come back and take you home. I could not stop, but you now know. Singing. Come out and pull my seedies. Am I a part of the cure? I am a part. [Music] Back in the day, you used to be able to climb up here without handrails. [Music] Sketchy. What’s he doing? He’s doing some hikeies. Look at that. Sun’s out. Beautiful. [Music] [Music] [Music] Nothing else compares. [Applause] Oh, nothing else. [Applause] [Music] [Music] Well, that’s the Second castle done. Took some good footage there with a drone and that. Off to the third one. Rock and roll. That’s what it’s saying. Blue light now. It soon make noises if you’re going the wrong way. You sure this is a road. And nowadays we’re off to the last castle. He said that I’m not allowed to do a another route again cuz I just put so many old hills in. Look at him moving in. Boom. Mo. Nothing wrong with a little hill. What goes up must come down. and all that. It’s beautiful. Just take your time. It’s not on race. Just chill. Get her in the right gear in a lot. Jesus what a bloody Smack you [Music] dead. Oh no. Thank god for that. He says, “Cool. I haven’t been here before.” White castle. And that is the trio of castles. [Music] Chubby, how you getting on with the heels? I remember my dad’s watching this. Medicine. Oh dear. Well, we’ve done it. the three castles. Just going to have a look. Well, this is the third castle called White Castle and it is definitely the biggest out of the three. It is massive. It’s got all sorts of little dungeons and stuff. Go down in there. Look how big it is. Very impressive. mental road. They used to build things back in the day. So that was the castle back in the day. Check out the mouth is massive. It’s still got water in it as well. huge. And there’s grounds as well. Castle goes around wicked. Yeah. So, we’ve done the free castles on the way back to Mammoth. Now, I never sent Chub the link of the ride. Reason being, and I knew he would go through it and see what ills there was. So, uh, yeah, happy days. So, we’ve done it anyway. Can’t just be easy all the time, can it? [Music] Yeah. again. [Music] Last big hill, I reckon. We hope so. 1. Hi Chubs and Rusty, great to see you both out on your bikes. The river you crossed over looked like the river why. Years ago we did school camps to Symonds at,where we went canoeing. Your not that far from the Forest of Dean. Used to drive down there with my mountain bike, on the back of my Ford Capri 2.8 injection. The good old days! Nice to see the sun shining and green trees and fields. Rusty Nails is giving it what for today. Good to see you out after work the other day Chubs. Don't see any old castles in Australia. Great to see the drone behave its self. Take care, all the best Tim 👍.

  2. You could have done 4 castles.. you went right past Raglan too! Very similar to the route we did a while back except we didn't go to Grosmont, we did another one that wasn't there anymore, just a lump of grass. And we rode from the Forest. Was a killer, especially the big hill to get back home after all those bloody hills in Wales!

  3. The ‘Gospel Pass’ audax follows a similar route ( starting Chepstow) via Monmouth then via Grosmont to Hay-on-Wye, returning over the top of a gert big mountain to Abergavenny then back to Chepstow.

  4. The area of the so-called Welsh Marches ( the border area of England & Wales) has one of the highest concentrations of castles in Europe, largely due to the Norman’s going full out to assert control over the rebellious Welsh/britons.

  5. Great ride rusty chub .it is hilly over the bridge but the roads are amazing with the views it’s my favorite place to get out and try the creo to the max loved it guys keep up the great work 👍👍🚴🚴
