Firstly, to learn more about the great charity work being done by Chainreaction Bike Convoy for Ukraine (and to make donations) please click here:
Their main goal is to raise enough money to buy 10 ambulances to send to Ukraine.
Two Peaks Frankfurt is one of a series of events to support this goal. Thanks to Chainreaction, ARA Mittelhessen and ARA München / Oberbayern in setting up this event, putting together a challenging and beautiful route, and for creating personalised frame badges etc… Not to mention the top pasta fest at Massif Central the previous evening.
This was an event I had been looking forward to a long time. Riding through areas I had never ridden in before combined with raising money for a good cause. Perfect!
The route – starting and ending in Frankfurt – would stitch together many cultural and historical highlights (that I will have to return to at some point), Point Alpha and two main climbs – the Two Peaks which give the route its name: Hoherodskopf (764 m) and Wasserkuppe (950 m).
Unfortunately I arrived at the start line with an injury that I had been carrying for the previous 4 weeks, blocking training during that time entirely. I decided to start and see how the first hour went. Then, when that went OK, extended the goal to Checkpoint 1, Checkpoint 2 etc… The last third of the route was flatter, but also had no escape plan as the local train line was being renovated. Thankfully my body let me finish the route, although a couple of the ramps tested my “ride like treading on glass” tactics 😀
And thanks to Alex for keeping me company for the last 70 or so kms. I was on autopilot for most of that.
