Day 3 of my 888 km cycling journey along Lithuania’s border turned into a real battle. After a late start and riding endless rough gravel roads in cold drizzle, we reached the northernmost point of Lithuania. With no bridge available, we crossed an ice-cold river by foot (shoes off to keep them dry), carrying bikes and gear across strong currents and sharp stones. Soaked to the chest, exhausted, but successful, we entered Latvia and continued riding through the beautiful lake region. Finally, we set up camp by a quiet lakeside after a hard but memorable day.
