Need some direction

Hello all,

I am looking to buy my very first adult bicycle. I have only ever had used facebook marketplace bikes.

I would like to use the bike for fitness and leisure. I would like a comfortable ride, where i can go 5-10 miles riding. I usually ride on paths, sidewalks and trails.

I have never ridden on a rode bike and I'm not sure if I want to buy one off the bat. Can I ride comfortably on a hybrid style, perhaps a figured 21 speeder. ?

My budget is $400.00 or less. I have looked on bikesdirect and also retrospect. Please let me know if you have feedback regarding these! I also don't want to to a bike shop and spend $$$$! I am completely clueless and I'm afraid I'll get ripped off!

As well as other similar ones on bikes direct. I plan to try and assemble but I will also pay for it if i need to. Just working on a budget
